To those who don't know, there is a ring of monkey hate that takes pleasure in seeing baby monkeys get tortured. People call them "tree rats" and make them leeches for needing to cling (which is a biological need for baby monkeys for proper psychological development). Most videos of "pet" monkeys on social media subtly abuse them by exploiting and denying their need to cling, which makes them freak out and look spoiled to the uninformed. This freaking out is what brings in viewers and makes the owners money. This video explains it well and there's no R rated torture on it. However, there are videos where monkeys especially babies get brutally tortured, mutilated, and killed and people pay for this stuff. I've infiltrated these groups and acquired these videos and they make The Human Centipede look like a children's movie by comparison.

Can the psychology community weigh in on why people hate monkeys so much when they've never interacted with them? Actually, this goes beyond hatred. If you hate something, you never want to see them, but these people delight in seeing baby monkeys get tortured. People in healthcare, who own pets, have kids, enjoy watching baby monkeys suffer. It's like there's something about monkeys that trigger their sadism, which is giving me nazism vibes with the jews. I feel like this could be the makings of a groundbreaking psychology study.

The article below will get you up to speed if you've never heard of it.

This one has no overt torture, but this baby was psychologically tortured to the extreme: they made it cling to that towel, essentially making that towel its mother, and took out of arm's reach but in the monkey's vision. Combined with the fact it's a baby so its brain isn't developed yet, specifically the frontal lobe that suppresses emotions, you get this. I won't include any physical torture but I wanted you guys to see just how bad this issue is.

This is horrific, but I'm not sure if it's specific to monkey hate or people just being terrible in general. I mean, people also mistreat other people like that.

I'm with Cara, I'm not convinced this is anything unique to monkey hate, as it is just terrible people who enjoy seeing other things in pain. I mean, we have swathes of political sentiment and public that relishes at the pain of others in every day life.

Combination of neoteny/kinderschema, projective identification, twinship in the face of delayed maturity, bunch of lonely horny failure dudes talking on the internet and one upping each other, and antisocial personality disorder.

From Hunting the monkey torturers

In real life, he was Mike McCartney, a 48-year-old former motorcycle gang member in Norfolk, Virginia, with a swastika tattoo and a “man cave” in his home decorated with Nazi symbols and Confederate flags.

Sounds like he's a Neo Nazi? And this is the guy who eventually started to feel bad and helped take it down...

Me reading, learning that Mini survived and was rescued

I forgot to mention there's literally a wikipedia page for monkey hate, so it seems this is particular for monkeys.

Sadly, she's the exception. This one talks about Garina, a baby monkey that was tortured for 3-5 months and was poached at just 4 weeks old. Towards the end of her life, they cut off her lips and broke her arm. The video I posted up there was of Jessy, another monkey that was owned by the same owner as Garina. For every monkey saved, at least 100 didn't make it.

I've come across liberals that enjoy this crap too.

I'm not saying I agree with god when he decided to flood the world, but I am saying I get it. (I'm atheist for the record)

As someone who specializes in treating interpersonal trauma, I have many days where I'm like "what is WRONG with people?"

I thought the parallels that the BBC article made between this and child abuse were quite interesting.

Well, this was a dark rabbit hole to go down on a Halloween friday.
Ignorance is bliss. Do not go down this rabbit hole, especially if you're the type that has to know everything. Your curiosity will get the better of you and you will get addicted to just wanting to know, like I did.

I just can’t with this right now. I know the dark corners of the web have existed since the internet was born, but mainstream folks are just noticing now.

The majority of the public continue to conflate “evil” with mental health. The scarier truth is that it’s not mental health, some people are just evil. Pathologizing people is easy to accept bc their diagnosis can be “blamed”. The reality is there are people out there who thrive on violence and pain. They exist to harm and destroy, and they have been doing their worst since our ancestors started walking on two feet.

No horror movies are needed when our ACTUAL history is so much worse.

Concurring with @cara susanna and @WisNeuro - while there are probably individuals who really hate monkeys specifically, but this isn't really about monkeys. You know what monkeys really resemble? People. You know what you really aren't allowed to kidnap and torture (or easily access videos of)? People. So if someone wants to torture (and/or watch torture) of people, especially children, then this is the next best thing. Given the choice between watching a person (particularly of an ethnic group they hate) or a monkey get tortured, these vase majority of these people would probably choose the former.

One thing to remember when you come across something like this is that people can be awful in ways you can't even imaging...but those people tend to be quite rare. It's just that because there are 8.2 billion people out there, even a low base rate means there are a significant number that could connect through the internet (facilitated by anonymity).

It was not. I didn't say her name because I don't want to give people another dark rabbit hole to go down, lol
I see why you were reminded of it with Garina. Most of the monkey videos I saw, they were tortured and then kill relatively quickly compared to Garina. The videos can range from 10 mins to an hour, but at least those baby monkeys were died relatively quickly compared to Garina. What she and her fellow "sibling" monkeys endured was horrific even for by monkey torture standards. Every "pet" monkey got the short end of the stick on life, but Garina and her "siblings" got the short end of the monkey torture business; they got the short end of the short end of the stick.

Conversely, it could be you are underestimating how many people are like this because the internet lets them remove their mask they wear in public and embrace their real, ugly, selves.
