Moonlighting w/o permission

Hey guys,

Is there any way to moonlight in an institution where it's technically not allowed?

If your program prohibits it and you have signed a statement to that effect, you run the risk of being fired from your residency program. Obviously if you are working in a facility away from your home program it makes it harder for them to find out, but they still may if your moonlighting employer calls for Risk Management/Med Mal info, etc. Someone might see you, report you, etc. its pretty risky.

I was lucky, I got away with a slap on the wrist (because I honestly thought I could moonlight as long as I was under 80 hrs/week).

Some institutions have what is known as in-house moonlighting, or extra hours for extra pay. These spots can be hard to come by tho, but can be worth the effort.

It'll be tough...who are you going to ask for letters of recommendation? They're likely going to contact your current employer to verify you've been a sound resident...what contact info will you give them?

This is a very risky preposition, IMHO.

I am wondering something similar - except of course I realize I can't moonlight as a MD. I want to find out things like the state statutes on things like laser hair removal - something that pays good money in a short time.

As a med student? 😕

Very bad things can happen to you if they expressedly state that you may not moonlight. This could be as serious as being fired or being forced to extend your residency by several months (i.e. the time that you've been moonlighting) to other problems later on with getting letters of recommendation or references.

You'd probably be better off working somewhere else for minimum wage and getting the employee discount instead. And spending less money.
