Have a question regarding moonlighting...here's my dilemma...I'm starting peds intern year in June, thinking about switching to anesthesia....if i get into somewhere in the Match, then I will have a year off...since Peds counts as my prelim year. Prior to this year off I will have completed STep 3 (hopefully😉) anyways, Can I moonlight during that year even though I am not in any residency program? Does anyone know how that works? Can I just look for moonlighting positions anywhere in the U.S.? How do I find moonlighting opportunities?

You'll need an independent license and someone who is willing to hire you as a moonlighter. I'm not sure what you can do as someone who completed a peds year. Maybe urgent care peds clinic? Most pediatricians are protective of kids, so I doubt one will hire you.

It's also unlikely that they will accept peds as a prelim year.

That is just not true.
Peds as a prelim year is unusual (mostly because there are very few programs that allow people to do peds as a prelim) but is generally very accepted. St. Louis Children's often has a resident or two doing a peds prelim and then going to derm, rads, anesthesia. They are one of the few hospitals that explicitly allow this.

Umm...doesn't that make my point for me?

Yes, you can moonlight. There are places that'll hire you. But it's on YOUR head.
YOU to determine what the appropriate limits for you are.... You can get a license and you'll be on your own....

Most of the moonlighting stuff is stuff anyone with a general medical background could deal with....

You absolutely can do a Peds prelim. What the poster meant was that there are few places where you can find one.

Every specialty has different requirements. It is my understanding, having had the experience of going Peds to PM&R, that they are similar.

From the American Board of PM&R:

......Twelve of the 48 months must consist of a coordinated program of experience in fundamental clinical skills such as an accredited transitional year, or include six months or more in accredited training in family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, or surgery, or any combination of these patient care experiences. The remaining months of this year may include any combination of accredited specialties or subspecialties.

So basically anything counts.

You should apply to gas positions outside of the match. You should stay in your program until you start in a gas program. I took a year off years ago and moonlighted. The only place that I could find was at a psychiatric hospital.
Everyone tells you that it is easy to find moonlighting positions but it is difficult if you have only limited training. You should be able to find a position for 2006. If the only position that you find starts 2007, stay at your present program until 2007. Most facilities want you to have your own malpractice coverage. That can be several thousands of dollars. if you stay with your peds program until you are ready to leave you will have health insurance and will not have to wonder where your next meal will be coming from.

Just my two cents.
