Does anyone know the laws regarding IMG's and moonlighting (especially in Georgia, Ohio, Utah, or Virginia)? i've been to www.fsmb.org but this is a really time-consuming task and it is sometimes difficult to find the answer (and things in the real world may differ).

As far as I know in Georgia, if you have your numbers (medical license number, DEA, etc.), done at least a year of internship/residency, passed all 3 steps of USMLE, and your institution allows it, then you can moonlight. Keep in mind you'll need to pay for malpractice out of your pocket since residencies won't allow this.

many moons ago, when i last heard other people complaining about it (i'm not an img so i wasn't really interested) it depended on your visa status. the j1s were forbidden as they were on a training visa, and obviously moonlighting especially at outside places wouldn't be training. i believe the h1s were allowed as they were on a work visa, but a lot more paperwork was required which no one was usually willing to do, outside of very rural areas. i believe we were told that this these were federal regulations, but that may not be correct, and things may have changed.

Smackdaddy's right, you cannot moonlight if you are on J1 visa. If you are on H1, you need to get your full license first - and the requirements for it vary from state to state (check on FSMB.org 😉). Furthermore, each residency program has its own policy about moonlighting. The best way to find out is to ask current residents in the program.
