A 1990 graduate of NSUCOM (back when it was still just Southeastern University).Thirteen years ago, the Florida Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians named him its Physician of the Year.

He has a history of sexually molesting and raping female medical students and female patients.

I just hope the general public doesn't think all DOs are like this and doesn't use this to put down osteopathic physicians.

I agree with your last two sentences but I'm not selectively finding articles that make DOs look bad.. I was reading the news today like I do every morning and I ran into this article. If you look at my previous threads in the pre-osteopathic forum and indeed my post history, you would know that I'm heavily biased in favor of DOs and support DOs any chance I get. In fact, I started a thread some time ago in which I posted news links that showed the rapid growth and recognition of osteopathic physicians in the USA.

You are right that DOs are humans too and can do stupid illegal things. You are right that plenty of MDs (lot more than DOs) and other healthcare professionals do stupid illegal things as well.

The difference is in the reaction. When a MD or a nurse does something wrong, their credentials are not called into question every single time. Their profession is not ridiculed and criticized every single time. Whether it's the comment section in this article or the comment section for the recently posted article about the anti-vaxxer cardiologist in Arizona, it's always full of comments putting down DOs and making them out to be less than MDs.

Frankly, I'm sick of it. DOs are equal in every way to MDs. In fact I would argue that DOs are more skilled because they have an additional 200 hours of OMT under their belt. Why can't the public understand that?

Who cares what the public thinks. Some of them can't even locate Florida on a map.

Osteopathy in the UK is very different than osteopathic medicine in the US. My understanding is that UK osteopaths are NOT medical doctors.

Although one of the article links I posted is from a British newspaper, all 3 news links are about a Florida osteopathic physician who was a NSU-COM grad and had practiced in Florida for over 20 years.

So just to be clear, none of the news links I posted was referencing UK osteopaths or osteopathy in the UK. This news is 100% American.
 
It was one comment...People like to trash doctors whether they're MD or DO. This is nothing new.

And all docs get crapped on by a percentage of the general population.

Not everyone trashes doctors, but of course there's tons of people out there who don't trust doctors for whatever reason (overpaid, pushing poisons for profit, lack empathy, etc..) Those same people love to comment on those kinds of articles, and I'm sure many of them will end up as your patients someday.
 
I wish the media would stop referring to him as an "osteopath". I hope they realize soon that that is an offensive term, they should say "osteopathic physician".

It's because people who live under a rock think every doctor has a god-complex or acts like house. They take the slightest sign of ego from a doctor as the doctor thinking they are the greatest thing in the world. That, combined with the fact that people get intimidated by those who are intelligent and hardworking puts most physicians right in the middle of their crosshairs.

Also, DOs in Europe are very different from DOs here. From what I've heard from European friends, some of them are not on par with NPs here. Over there many of them do still consider themselves 'osteopaths' and practice treatment techniques that we would never consider doing here. Example is HVHA over there. Idk about other DOs on here, but that just sounds like a terrible idea to me, especially for cervical treatments...

Even apart from the Daily Mail, the Tampa Bay Times, an American newspaper, refer to him as an osteopath. In fact "osteopath" is in their headlines. It's like they want to differentiate him from a "normal" physician. "He's not a physician, he's an osteopath". That's the vibe I'm getting.

Do you really expect different from the media? They want to sell stories and make money, not report things accurately.
 
I've heard DOs call themselves osteopaths. I don't think it's necessarily pejorative

Whether you're an MD, DO, PhD, PharmD or whatever you will have people that are going to be ignorant and condescending. I've had a few times when I've said I'm applying to medical school and people have asked "What you mean like medical assistant programs?" Try getting around that kind of thing! I also have friends who are in PhD programs and people have given them the whole "That's not even a real doctor!" spiel. Don't get me started on JDs. People are going to be dinguses, regardless.

In this particular case you're dealing with the media. The media is going to latch on to whatever mundane detail they can manipulate their audience with. I can also guarantee the person who wrote this piece wouldn't be able to tell you what is a DO is anyways. Why bother? You'll never accomplish anything if you let other people question what you're doing.

Osteopaths also refer to European/Canadian healthcare practitioners who are trained in OMT and nothing else and have very limited practicing privileges (can usually only do OMM on patients).

A lot of Osteopathic physicians in the US don't like to be called osteopaths because they want to make sure people know they are different from those osteopaths living abroad. American osteopathic physicians can do OMM but they can also prescribe medication, do surgeries, and do anything else an MD can do.

There are bad people in every profession. I'm sure you could find an MD, an NP, a PA, an ND and a homeopath who have been convicted of something similar.

Legally the title osteopath can't be used for practitioners of OMM in Canada. They often go by practitioner of manual manipulation/osteopathy.

Are you accepted? If so, I'd worry more about getting into the best residency in the field of your choice instead getting worried about what some random internet poster writes.

DO/MD, fully licensed to prescribe and perform surgery in all 50 states.

To be fair, I think in Europe "osteopath" does refer to someone only with manipulation training, where in the US "osteopathic physician" refers to, well, an osteopathically trained physician.

I shadowed one very-pro-OMM (his specialty was cranial) DO who called himself an osteopath, but I haven't heard the phrase at my school.

Admittedly the fact that Mercola has not been forcefully sued by the AOA and had his degree rescinded is a big PR problem for DOs.

why? he does not claim to speak for the aoa, and he satisfied all his school's requirements for his degree... the guy, whom i didn't even know existed until recently, has every legal right to say whatever he wants and look like an idiot.. as much as dr. oz.. except where prohibited

Because he violates his convictions as an osteopathic physician. He violates the ethics of a role that dispenses him power and authority. He is bankrupting and worse harming patients with serious illnesses.

Mercola should be in jail and striped of his degrees and licenses.

People trash plenty of professions.

The criticisms within different medical specialties continue once you're in school and once you're working as an attending.

What internet strangers think about being a DO will likely not affect you at all. I don't think I've ever seen a comment section with anything more than ignorant comments. They're always good for entertainment.
