Sorry Cleric--didn't see another related thread on this topic. I can delete if it's annoying everyone.
Wow...okay
in my opinoin, schools that accept high GPA and DAT score will be very competitive. schools like harvard, columbia, ucla, upenn, and ucsf. Im sure there are a few more but i cant think top of my head.
geez everyone's getting so crabby on these threads. If you think it's annoying don't answer it and ignore it.
My thoughts exactly 🙂
im not crabby about the fact that the thread was posted, because i think it is a very legitimate, important question. i am crabby about the lack of use of the search feature, but more so about the inevitable debate that is about to ensue for the thousandth time.
Pointless thread with even more pointless responses. 👎thumbdown👎
The top 3 most competitive schools:in my opinoin, schools that accept high GPA and DAT score will be very competitive. schools like harvard, columbia, ucla, upenn, and ucsf. Im sure there are a few more but i cant think top of my head.
1. Harvard
2. Columbia
2. UCLA
Although UPenn and UCSF are up there, I've seen many students who have gotten into UPenn or UCSF but didn't get into Columbia or UCLA.
*Waits for stupid responses citing obscure state schools that only accept in-state students*
*Waits for armorshell and doc toothache to come in with even more idiotic arguments like "UoP is one of the most competitive schools" and "it's harder to get into dental school than medical school"*

more competitive does not = more education or better school. that's why these threads get outta control. dental school is harder to get into than some DO schools but that doesn't matter if you wanna be a dentist and not a doctor.

Competitive implies competition. State schools effectively limit the field of students who realistically have a shot, thus decreasing the competition. They're not competitive, they're selective.
Medical school is more competitive than dental school, vet school, pharm school, whatever, period.
👍
I guess you will have to add me to your list of IDIOTIC commenter ... as many people will agree with me UOP is a very competitive school due to its highly attractive 3 year program. (Many of my friends got into UCSF and UCLA and not UOP) Although, UOP may not require the highest GPA, it does have its own way of being very selective. UCLA, a lot of times, bases its selection on research experience and high GPAs, yet, UOP selects many people based on their potential and not JUST their grades on paper.
Also, due to the high number of medical schools in the United States (over 130 MD-granting schools and 28 DO-granting schools) there are Medical schools which being accepted to is much easier than being accepted to most dental schools. However, I do agree that the MCAT can be more difficult than the DAT, yet, their structures are somehow different so we can not definitely compare the two.
I hope my IDIOTIC comment is useful.👍

and Harvard and Columbia don't select people based on potential as well???
I agree
and Harvard and Columbia don't select people based on potential as well???
I'm not very familiar with Harvard and Columbia's selection process (was never interested) and as you can read, I did not mention their names, right??
I am sure all schools select people based on potential as well, however, their priorities do differ. UOP may accept someone who does not have great scores, yet, he/she is a great artist, very technical or has a very high PAT score, many schools do not do that. I am familiar with UCSF and UCLA's process (they are the schools I mentioned), since I attended UCLA for undergrad (and many of my friends go there for dental) and I was accepted to UCSF's dental school this year.

true...for everybody living in the 49 states that are not georgia, i think it would be pretty hard to get into georgia's dental school. perhaps impossible.
Even if you're in Georgia apparently! (I am still waitlisted at MCG despite being accepted to UPenn, Columbia, Temple, and Alabama...)
how about which schools are the most competitive once you're in? are pass fail schools like harvard, columbia less competitive even if they are the most selective?
Not sure about Harvard since it is indeed P/F
But Columbia is P/F/H and your ranked top 1/3, mid 1/3, and bottom 1/3 and since you take your didactic courses with the med students I think there will still be a fair bit of competition.
I'd imagine NYU with its HUGE class size would fuel a bit of competition for rank esp if individuals wanted to specialize.

Even if you are in the bottom 1/3 pile, you'll get "recommended" in your recommendation letter. (other piles will have "very highly recommended" or "highly recommended") No rank, No percentage.
Every dental school will be competitive and has gunners even if you go to p/f school. Competition is everywhere.

I thought this was the question the OP was asking.
P/F doesnt really help as much as you think because I am sure every school has a way of distinguishing top students from the rest. I know columbia has H/P/F and ucla has high pass

Simple and short answer: the most competitive dental schools are the ones with the highest GPA and DAT scores. See Dr. Toothaches links.
Every dental school is competitive once you're in. There are always gunners. It's Dental School.
*Note: Nothing on DSN is answered "simple and short". I apologize.
**2nd Note: I plan on being a gunner once in dental school. I am not ashamed.

The OP simply asked what the most competitive schools are. Your insecurity, originating from attending one of the least competitive schools in the country, made you talk about the quality of the education. You're kind of like armorshell and the rest of the crew who go to less competitive schools yet still put on a front like Midwestern was your first choice. Why not just admit that you sucked in college and face the truth like a man? Surely, the "I didn't care" or the "I wasn't trying" excuse will get old, eventually.

Oh snap! This should be good...

I got into the second most competitive school in the country (according to you), and chose Pacific. Explain that with your "theory."

i didn't say anything about midwestern on this thread. i have never implied that it was my first choice or that i ever had good grades in college. i think the least secure people are the ones who won't be happy unless they get into a school that others will give them approval for getting into. read some of my old posts, i have told my whole story. i was trying in college. i was also married and working and dealing with a lot of things that made it a little harder for me. but....guess what. i still got in. no matter where you go i have the same opportunity as anyone else that got into wherever else. we'll have the same shot at making the same money and having the same type of career. so whatever! and i love it here at midwestern. my classmates are awesome, the faculty treat us like family (1:5 faculty:student ratio not bad!) and the campus is beautiful. some day i can tell you about what truth is and what being a man is all about.

as someone wise once said.. "Chase the dream not the competition mate"🙂

True "dat".
That was some heart to heart talk, I can respect that. Good for you sir. I don't even know what "frontin'" is. You claim Columbia is the second most competitive school in the country. You claim that Pacific is non-competitive. You claim I say Pacific was my top choice simply because I couldn't get in anywhere else.
I was accepted to Columbia and Pacific, and I currently attend Pacific. Defend how that fits into your world view.

From urban dictionary:
Frontin': to put on a false disguise usually to impress others.
So, yeah, I don't really know how that applies in your case considering you've never acted like Pacific is the best dental school out there.

Oh come on, I totally agree with Doctor McLovin, I mean UOP practically sends out coupons in the mail for people to even think of attending their school, I heard they send representatives around the country to beg students for applications, I mean it's not like anyone even wants to go to UOP, it's not like it has a great three year program or anything, everyone I talk to UOP is the back up to their back up school, so yep I got to agree.
LOLLLL
( you know when someone says something soo stupid it's better not to dignify their comment with an answer, just ignore them, they'll go away 🙂

in all fairness armorshell did get a 25 on the DAT....I have no doubt that he had his pick of dental programs and he chose UoP because he felt it was a great fit not because it was the only school he got into. And from what I remember he put up a high 90 on part I of the boards.
