i drop the f-bomb quite a bit in my day to day talk (basically I sound like i'm from ****in long mutha ****in island). I really have to be careful when i'm at interviews.

I dropped a few f***s during some downtime at an entire interview. Fortunately, I caught myself quick enough and realized that this was not the time nor place. I was just so nervous that I didn't notice what was coming out my mouth.

Like it or not, these same people WILL end up in your class no matter where you end up going. It will take a lot of restraint over your next four years to not want to kick them in the face on a regular basis.

On the upside, it's good practice in tolerance that you'll need when you have those "special" patients down the road.

Anyhow, it's funny how we're all ragging on other premeds. Has it ever occurred to you that you yourself could be friggin' annoying? It seems only CarlosMielefan realizes this, lol 😛 . Everyone claims to be different from the "typical premed", but if this is true, then who actually comprises the annoying premed group that we keep dissing?

I would think that the percentage of SDN people that are annoying at interviews would be higher than that for the overall premed population. I'm sure I can be fallible and annoying, as it's hard to please everyone and make them your friends 😍 .

Maybe you're being uptight, but my post wasn't directed at you. It was a general post directed to people who have posted in this thread, including me. Just wanted to point out that we could be the very people that we are mocking.

There was this one dude from Pomona at one of my interviews and he came off as the biggest asshat. He exuded this "I am from CA look how frickin cool I am" attitude that made me want to curb kick him.

Oh Lord, I met a dude from CA (at a Northeast school) who was all into outdoorsy stuff, so I tried to start a conversation with him about hiking and rock climbing... you know, just being friendly. Big mistake- I was clearly below his notice since the East is just a giant garbage dump with poor-quality produce. He was so DOWN on the Northeast ("I'm only out here because I didn't get any interviews in California because the competition is SO much harder out there") that I wanted to smack him. He refused to acknowledge that one could rock climb, hike, and [gasp!] surf on the East Coast. Then he tried to convince me that there isn't any Granite in New Hampshire.

I must say, though, that all the other CA applicants I've met have been reallllly nice.

Thankfully, I haven't had anyone overly irritating at my interviews. Everyone seemed so nervous that they hardly said anything at all. But interviews aren't over yet so I'm sure I'll encounter a few.

However, I do get annoyed by people who won't talk to me when I try to break the ice. They act like having a friendly conversation will somehow affect their chances of admission as if I'm probing for info to sabotage them. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

When I went to my interview at NYMC, I took a cab from the White Plains airport to the school. On the way there, the cabbie asks me if I'm from California. I say, "no, why?". He says, "Oh, I just drive a lot of kids from California that can't get into UCLA." Great way to curb my excitement. I guess all the Californians complain to the White Plains cabbies. At least someone is listening to them.

I have a GREAT one!

At one interview, the admin building was kinda hard to find. Me and a few other suits found each other and started wandering together. Eventually, we got close to the place and a friendly young man approached us and said, "You here for the medical school interviews?" And then he gave us directions to the office. Nice young man.

About half an hour later, as the day was set to begin, the nice young man appeared again. "Are we all here?" he said. And everyone kind of mumbled, because how were we supposed to know? Then he said, "Why don't we start by going around the room and saying our names, and where we're from. You start," he said, pointing to some girl.

So we got about halfway into doing that and the Director of Admissions showed up. This schmuck was just another interviewee! Another guy actually blurted out, "So wait, you're not admissions staff?" It was super annoying. And he stayed super-annoying, trying to have personal conversations with the dean, the financial aid woman, the tour guides whoever. "Great tie, is that Polo?" It was like he had to make it clear that he was more like the AdCom than the other interviewees. I hate that guy. If he's in my MS1 class, I may vomit.

I agree - but I also think it's stupid for adcoms to make everyone wear nametags with the our name (duh) and school listed. I know it's just meant to bring some context to a person - and to facilitate conversation - but the same goal could be achieved by listing an applicant's city and state.

I had a funny experience interviewing at Baylor last year. I graduated from UW - Seattle for undergrad, but I took a couple of classes from a local community college (Bellevue) during high school.

So naturally, my nametag at Baylor has my name, and then for my college, it reads: "Bellevue Community College."

The looks from all the Ivy League and Ivy-League-type kids were priceless. 🙂

Ha ha no I was lost finding their admissions office too..... I tried to tell the secretary where I was and she had no clue....so finally I hung up and found my own way...........

So far I have had no obnoxious experience ...........thank God....except for Duke, at all my interviews I got into conversation with the my fellow candidates quite easily ...Duke was another story altogether......

to single out one annoying interviewee? don't think i can do it. schools that seem to produce aloof, over-confident peeps (only in my limited experience, mind you) would be duke, notre dame, and perhaps upenn. i'd have to say i've been pretty impressed, overall, with my contemporaries though.

oh, and i HATE, i mean HATE the whole "let's put everybody's school name on their name tag" sh.t. ditto for the "schools represented today" lists in the admissions office (my school, wright state, otherwise known to other applicants as "where the hell is that?" always seemed to end up next to yale alphabetically). gee, thanks for nothing 🙄

I like it when they list applicants' schools. I went to a small liberal arts college in the midwest, and at several schools where I've interviewed, that list has helped me connect with med students who also went to my undergrad school. It really makes a difference to me to see my school represented, so those lists have been a huge help. At one school, a prof who was also an alum even looked for me in the crowd after seeing my school on the "list." He just wanted to say hi. It made the day a lot more personal for me.

over the course of my interviews, there were dozens of other schools represented which i hadn't previously heard of....and they were all "small liberal arts colleges". for a moment, just THINK about how often that 4-word phrase is said in academia and on the interview trail. lots of common ground can be found with fellow interviewees regarding small liberal arts colleges; in my case (a 17,000-student public university that, despite having an allopathic med school, is STILL totally anonymous)...well, not so much.

Besides, all "small liberal arts colleges" are NOT the same. That's a stereotype that I think gets perpetuated within big universities, but it's not true. It matters to me whether ADCOMS take applicants from small midwestern towns seriously (where going to an Ivy League school for undergrad usually isn't an option to begin with, so the prestige hierarchy shouldn't apply, although I know adcoms apply it anyway), and whether a few students in the class can find my state on a map (which not all educated people can do, let me tell you!).

Although I agree, it gets pretty crass sometimes, to look around and see how many of the students are sporting big name schools on their nametags.

Hmm. I always talk to other applicants about where they've been. I like to get more opinions from other people about where they've been. The more data you have, the better likely you are to make a good decision. I guess I always thought it was just helpful to share opinions.

But if someone moves into the bragging phase of where they're interviewing, then it can get annoying.

I've actually been super impressed with my fellow interviewees. Whenever I've made any effort at all to talk to people, and sometimes even when I haven't, I've gotten to have great conversations. Wash U was the best for that; I really wished the people I went sightseeing with would end up in my M1 class wherever I end up going!

There have been a couple people who have refused to answer questions. One of my big things is health policy, and I like hearing smart people's take on the issues, so I often tell fellow interviewees that and ask what they think. Most either give some (generally fascinating) opinions, or say they don't know. A few people have told me that they wouldn't share because they don't want people stealing their ideas!

Of course I'm sure I've annoyed people by talking too much or whatever.

After the interview day ended I was riding in a shuttle back to the airport with three other interviewees. We were all saying how we had a ton of work to do and how missing school was starting to takes its toll. Then one cocky ivy punk decides to tell me that since I'm heading back to my small liberal arts college in florida I might as well write my essays in crayon. I must say that the urge to send him flying out the door of a moving vehicle was quite hard to resist.

Oh my god, I don't know what I'd do if this happened to me. I'm a very calm guy, but certain things really tick me off. I'd love to sock him in the throat, and watch stagger around a little bit, then tell him, "They taught me that at my liberal arts college too."

I'm a post-bacc, and did my pb work at a local 4-year. My undergrad has a lot of prestige, my pb doesn't. I kept hoping my nametags would have the pb school listed just to screw with people. (They've all used my u/g school instead.)

I was at Vandy in Sept. with a group of 12. It was all brand name places except for one guy from U. Utah. Vandy nametags, like every other name tag, has your name on top, and your school name on the second line.

We were eating lunch, and I was talking to the Utah guy. We started to hit it off and he told he that he started to feel a little out of place with all the brand names. (Truly bizarre since this guy also had interviews lined up at Mayo, Harvard, and a couple other big places.) I ended up pointing to his name tag and telling him that if applicants start talking about the bottom name instead of the top name, that's probably because the top name isn't worth talking about and the interviewers will figure that out. He giggled. Hopefully, that put him at ease. He was one of the few quality applicants I've met on the trail.
