Hello Everyone!

I am having heart palpitations when I consider the cost of my future degree. I am weighing the risk-reward and over analyzing every aspect of the decision.I am looking Nova Southeastern and Barry University because they are close to where I live. To complicate matters, my fiancee has a job she enjoys (and is well paid for). However, we both are open to moving if it makes sense. Hence, I am here to inquire about the cost/benefit ratio of differing schools relevant to my academic credentials. Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. My stats follow...

Cum GPA: 3.2
Last 60 3.9
GRE: 161V/154Q 1360 (composite equivalent)
Finishing my observation hours
Rec from dean of psychology at my university
Rec from a social worker
Planner rec from an OT

This calculator might be helpful regarding the cost/benefit of certain programs.

You have nice stats so you have a good chance at acceptances. I don't believe there is much benefit salary-wise to attending a more prestigious school vs. a less prestigious one; most employers don't really care as long as you are licensed. I also don't think there is much of a salary bump for OTD over MOT either, although it can open more doors in terms of research, teaching, management, etc.

Hello Phi784,
Did you look into FIU, their program is much cheaper. Also have you heard from Nova or Barry yet? I'm curious because I also applied to those schools.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tuition. I also freaked out a few weeks ago but honestly after taking a look at the OT jobs on career builder I noticed the salary is actually a bit higher than I thought (could also be that I'm in Chicago though...) and you can always pick up some home health hours for the first few years post graduation to pay off a good chunk of loans. I do think the degree is worth the loans! 🙂

Also, I did speak to a few OTs who mentioned that while yes - you will get a job no matter what school you go to, the fact that they went to programs that were known as being a little better did open more doors for them and came up a lot in their careers. Just a thought when it comes to your decision because I know a lot of people say ranking and reputation of the program doesn't matter but I mean - it has to count for something!
