I'm applying to dental school now and I know this residency is a long time away, but I have this one concern. Is it easier/necessary to go to dental school in the same state as where you do residency/where you want to live? Is it easy to move? Do you have to retake any exams or get new licenses when you move to a new state? Finally, in terms of residency admissions, do they mostly take dental students who are in their own state?

I went to a dental school out of state. It was a great experience, so I dont think its necessary. In terms of getting in residency, they don't necessarily take students from their own state, but some programs may be biased.. With competition these days, just get in a school and be glad you got in and go from there..

Most programs look to have students from different schools. Most do not require state licensure. On fact several states require a residency for licensure by itself or in lieu of an exam.
First get into dental school. Choice the best for you. Location. Cost. Etc
Then you have at least 2 years to question faculty and seniors about programs.
