Any other anesthesia folks in the situation of being competitive for a possible anesthesia spot in your highly competitive region of the country but not a medicine or transitional year?

Are you going to move twice even if you have strong ties to the area or do a surgery prelim?

I will move twice.

I would do a TY in Iraq before I did a surgical prelim year anywhere. Did you not apply to any categorical programs?

I find it difficult to believe that a 1 year preliminary medicine spot is harder to find in any region than an anesthesia residency?!? That said, If so, I would move twice.

It is those Transitional Years (TY) that most of us are after. We are competing against other Anesth. Derms, Radiology and a few others. The Prelims are less competitive and the surg prelim aren't competitive at all.

I did apply to categorical programs. Most programs are advanced, I'm not sure how that is relevant.

Grrrr, I dunno what to do! It would involve leaving a serious relationship and all my family and friends.

I got one interview for medicine in the area whereas I got 3 for anesthesia... no TY in my area....

What did you think of your surgery rotation? Do you like the residents/attendings/etc? Lots of people manage to do a surgery internship - it will certainly make you a better doctor than a TY. And seriously, what you are comparing is

1) Surgery Internship. When you leave the hospital you can go out drinking with your buddies, go have lunch with you parents or go get laid. And you don't have to move any of your stuff.

2) Other internship. You are perhaps happier while in the hospital. When you leave, you can sleep or watch TV.

You are a genius.
