MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! What do people plan on wearing in admitted students day? I would go more casual, but I have a meeting with a professor about an RAship so I was thinking of wearing a blazer. I work in a federal office, so I’m trying to remember what “professional” looks like on the academic setting.

I haven't heard back yet, but I applied on 1/5. They sent me an email stating that my application would be reviewed after the preferred deadlines so I don't think they started looking at any applications until 1/15. Best of luck!

I applied for global health epidemiology and heard back on 1/22. I believe others on this forum heard back for the same program as well. I also applied on 1/15

Anyone apply/get into Rutgers and have any insight on when we’ll hear about financial aid? I know some kind of scholarship exists but nothing about the timeline

Does anyone know if the Colorado School of Public Health has an admitted students day?

Got into Dartmouth on 1/30, so officially 3/3! NYU cross-continental was a bit of a back-up option for me so I think at this point I’m deciding between Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins... I like the sound of the academic enviornment and program at Dartmouth a bit better, but Johns Hopkins is ranked #1, so would it be a mistake to give that up? I’m applying to med school for the 2020-2021 year, does anyone have any insight on if ranking of my MPH program would have any bearing on my med school applications?

Congrats to everyone else on their acceptances!!!

Anyone else torn about which program to choose? My current dilemma for today is if I wanna go to Emory or Columbia and then switch to another school for tomorrow...decisions decisions lol

So torn! All of us choosing between Emory and Columbia should chat on a private message.

Hey, I got an acceptance from Rutgers but yet to hear regarding the financial aid. I think I’ll drop an email to them today.

Awesome, if you don’t mind please let me know what you learn 🙂

Has anyone gotten scholarship offers from Michigan yet? So far I have just gotten an offer for federal loans....

An MPH has little to no bearing on a med school application. Go wherever you're most excited about.

Has anyone heard from Michigan yet for HBHE? I applied in mid-November and was wondering if I should give them a call this week to ask for an update. Thanks!

Anyone hear back from UNC, Columbia, or Johns Hopkins MSPH lately / know when they'll be releasing more decisions? I applied to all of them almost 2 months ago and my refresh button is starting to fade...

Did anyone else apply for the master's fellowship at UW? And is anyone else going to UW's admitted student day for both days?

I applied in early October, made my portal mid-November but haven't heard back yet. I've seen a few people post about getting in already and am in the same boat. :/

Hopkins MSPH takes 8-10 weeks. I was verified 12/8 and still am waiting! I've seen a few people post about acceptances into the MSPH programs over the past week but they had applied in November!

Ooo lucky you to have a friend there! And sorry I should have been more clear- I meant will you be doing a separate official visit to Emory or RSPH on top of the Visit Emory days? I feel like VE will be enough but I just don’t know what to expect!

Ooooh gotcha! I'm just going to VE, but did also go to their Fall Open House! TBH, I feel like their VE itinerary is so in depth that there's not something you would get at any other visit day that won't be at VE.

Just got recommended for acceptance to Biostatistics PhD program at Fielding (UCLA). I'm happy, but also confused because I applied for an MPH....

Edit: Just got a correction email. I got accepted for a Masters, not a PhD. I was lowkey wondering/panicking about whether I applied to the wrong program, so I'm thankful they sent out the correction.

This phenomenon might be happen only with a 170-168-5 GRE 🙂 they couldn't believe that you're not a Bios PhD applicant 🙂) maybe they wish you were!🙂

Ha, thanks. I was pretty sure from the start that it was just a form-email error, but I did still find myself wondering if I had somehow gotten accepted to a PhD program without even meaning to...

I do feel like I should have applied to PhD programs for financial reasons (paying for MS/MPH vs getting paid for PhD) but I'm just not that into research and feel like it's not the right fit for me. I'm definitely hoping my stats translate to scholarships, but I'm also weaker in the experience side of things, so I'll have to wait and see how things play out.

Well we haven’t gotten rejection emails yet so that’s something!

Yeah you’re probably right! I’ve never been to Atlanta so I’ll probably go a couple days before VE so I can scope out the area!

Anyone still waiting on UMich? I applied for MPH in Global Health Epi on 11/30 but still haven’t heard anything... it’s the second school I applied to and the last school I’m waiting to hear back from so I’m kind of impatient at this point

I totally understand. When I went in October it was pretty much only for a day and half and tried to explore downtown ATL so I’m really excited to explore the neighborhoods closer to Emory since it’s a little farther from DT and midtown

I've been to ATL twice and didn't really get to explore downtown as much as I wanted. I'm hoping to visit again next month and explore the neighborhoods for housing!

It’s such a big town! I feel like it’d take a while to see it all (and costly if you don’t have a car)! I’m definitely glad I’ll be in ATL for 3 days.

Undergrad School: Big Ten
Undergrad GPA: 3.6 (SOPHAS Verified
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular biology
GRE : V 158, Q 160, Writing 3.5 (bad at writing)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):

- 2 yrs research experience in molecular biology lab

(I didn't have too much experience, cuz I just changed my focus from molecular biology to public health from october last year. I even did not have any experience related to public health, so frustrating)

Letter of Recommendations:
1 from my principal investigator (strong)
1 from academic advisor (strong)
1 from professor in pchem

Interested in: Biostatistics (didn't see many biostats here. is anyone applying for biostats????)
Applied (include the date of application):

john hopkins (01/11), emory University (1/3 submitted, 1/24 verified), boston (1/3 submitted, 1/22 verified) columbia, psu, yale, upitts, (1/15 submitted, 1/22 verified), brown (1.17 submitted, 1.22 verified) all biostats
I actually got verified too late due to my transcripts deliveries, probably affecting my application a lot!!!!!!!! I hate SOPHAS!!!

Accepted: PSU (2/1)
Rejected: JHU (1/28)
Waitlisted:

I'm considering sticking around for a couple of days after VE to explore the downtown attractions and know my way around the Emory area. I don't have a car, so I'm looking into their MARTA day passes!

SOPHAS is the worst thing to ever be a thing. Just another example of the american edu system acting as a big business with students interests stuck in the background
