MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got in for the same thing too! I would call Emory and talk to them.

Also, if you were accepted in Emory, which one would you choose?

Sorry to reply so late to this! I am really trying not to get too attached to any one school until I hear back about scholarships/financial aid. I loved Columbia when I visited back in the fall: the rigor of the core curriculum is appealnig to me, there's really cool research going on that aligns with my interests, and the location is a huge plus for me! (I have family in the city and surrounding areas). However, I think it would be tough for me to justify the price tag compared to other equally great and more affordable options like UNC and Emory. And Emory and UNC both also have the big plus of proximity to public health organizations that would make for great practicum experiences.

I am definitely one to over analyze and overthink decisions, so I am already mentally preparing myself for the month of agonizing over this with all kinds of spreadsheets and pros and cons lists come March/April :scared:

No worries!! I am in the same boat. I still haven't heard back from UNC 🙁 I really wonder if Columbia's name is worth the price tag. Do you know if all scholarships are based on GPA and GRE scores? I probably don't stand a chance then.

Re: Columbia-- make sure to check in with current MPH students. I was seriously considering applying for my PhD there, but current students' opinions swayed me away. My general impression is that the school and the department I was interested in are going through a somewhat painful transitional phase. I was told that the PhD program I was interested in was very different in reality than from what was written online (which is what attracted me there). I'm not sure how, if at all, this is relevant to the MPH program, however. Do your research!

Hi guys,

I just called Cristina Salazar at the MSPH in International Health at Hopkins and she says that I have been waitlisted and decisions will be uploaded online soon. What do you think of my chances of still getting into this program? Do you think I should make a decision with the admissions I have now or still wait to see what happens? What had previous experience of this situation been like?

Are all decisions being uploaded today? I applied to International Health, Health Systems as well.

Can I ask which department? I think post submitting my application to SMS I read something (maybe in a thread from a previous year?) that gave me pause

For those who weren't able to attend Columbia's virtual chat about financial aid today, here are some of the more important points:
  • We should receive award letters in 3-4 weeks.
  • U.S. citizens: be sure to submit your FAFSA to be considered for federal and institutional need-based aid. You should enter parental information if you're under the age of 26, as Columbia takes this into consideration when administering need-based aid. International students: since you don't quality for federal aid, private loans seem to be your best bet along with part-time student jobs.
  • Work-study may be offered but only if you're a U.S. citizen who has submitted your FAFSA.
  • All students: to be considered for merit-based scholarship, you must have an undergrad GPA at or > 3.75 and scores at or > 80th percentile on ALL sections of the GRE. These cutoffs seem to be very strict.
  • Columbia doesn't match award offers from other programs.
  • First-year students are not considered for graduate research assistantships. This was disappointing 🙁
  • You can be eligible for TA positions after completing the core in your first year with a B+ or better.
  • No new award offers are made after your first year and before your second year.

Also! "As an FYI to ALL, in order to be considered for need based grants, you MUST have an expected family contribution below $10,000, MUST have borrowed subsidized loans at the undergraduate level and MUST have received pell funding."

Thanks for this! So we have to meet all three criteria to be eligible for need based grants? Do you know if Columbia said if we can still qualify/receive need based grants for other criteria?

The students I spoke to were in SMS but it seems like there are system-wide issues.

Hey guys, I’m not sure if there are many current students lurking on this thread but would anyone be able to speak on behalf of the Mount Sinai MPH and NYU MPH programs? I have been accepted to both programs and am looking to learn more about them from current students.

For Mount Sinai, I got in for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and for NYU I got in for Public Health Nutrition. I want to focus in Nutrition, Global Health and Chronic and Noncomminicable diseases. I am also looking at Emory since I was accepted there too but I’m not sure if I want to move that far away yet.

If you know about these programs, I would love to hear more information about them!

Thanks!

Does anyone have a sense of what the criteria is like for scholarships from Mount Sinai/what kind of stats you need to qualify?

Hey guys I’m a current student at Sinai in the Health Promotion Disease Prebention track. 🙂 I was also accepted into NYU’s Global Health but due to cheaper costs, better aid, and meeting more of my interests through curriculum, I decided to go to Sinai. Sinai is definitely a better choice if you plan on living and working in the city— since it is reputable as NYCs largest and most successful healthcare system.

In terms of aid, many of my fellow peers also received loans. I’m not too aware on scholarships the school directly gives but financial aid really encourages to apply to outside scholarships. The financial aid office would be a great reference if you wanted to know more 🙂

WHAAAA GOT INTO JOHNS HOPKINS MSPH FOR GLOBAL EPIDEMIOLOGY DISEASE AND CONTROL!!!! Wishing the best for you all!

That's AWESOME! CONGRATS!!! Did you get an email notification or just logged in the portal? My application was verified 12/29- hopefully will hear back from them soon...

Thought I should finally post my stats 🙂

Undergrad School
: State School in California
Undergrad GPA: 3.1
Major/Minor: Animal Science (Pre-vet)
GRE: V: 157, Q: 154, W: 4.0 (October 2018)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
- short term position at a health promotion organization in Australia
- short term position at a clinical trials organization in Australia
- hundreds of research and lab experience from undergraduate labs
- Alzheimer's Association volunteer
- taught English in Spain for 3 years
- lived in Melbourne, Australia for a year with a working holiday visa

LOR: 2 managers from 2 different jobs in Australia and a professor/vet from undergrad

Interests: global health, health promotion, sexual and reproductive health

Applied: Columbia, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Washington, George Washington, Emory, Boston University, UNC Chapel Hill, Colorado School of Public Health

Accepted: Emory, Boston + $, Columbia

Rejected:
University of Washington, GW

Hi all! Does anyone have any information when it comes to UCLA and their need based financial aid options? What sort of grants do they provide (need/merit) and what is the availability of work study options? Thanks in advance! Thinking about financing this journey is starting to get really stressful 🙁

Finally getting around to posting my stats!

Undergrad School: Public Ivy (Graduated May 2016)
Undergrad GPA: 3.8
Major/Minor: Public Relations
GRE: V: 161, Q: 156, W: 5.0 (December 2017)

Experience/Research (please, be brief):
I work for a government contracting firm that focuses on public health campaigns. By the time I go to school I’ll have been there for three years. During my time I will have:

- Researched and developed several informational products focused on underage drinking and substance use prevention
- Led a quasi-experimental case study at two local middle schools in Florida and New Hampshire
- Managed several focus group discussions
- Developed retiontion strategy for an NIH cognitive brain study

Our work has earned our clients several awards including the National Public Health Information Coalition Silver Award. Additionally I’ve also worked for a rural health clinic and a charity that helps families of children who suffer from HPE and volunteered at a few hospital organizations. In college, I held a couple leadership positions as well.

LOR: The COO of my company, my direct supervisor, and a subcontractor of my company who holds a doctorate degree in the health field from Harvard

Interests: Behavioral health, community health, global health

Applied: Columbia, Yale, Brown, George Washington, Penn, Drexel

Accepted: GW, Penn, Drexel + $, Columbia

Rejected: None so far!

I’m most nervous about Yale, but I’ve seen people with lower stats than me get accepted and people with higher stats than me get rejected, so I kinda feel like it’s a crap shoot. Also nervous about my experience as I don’t have any lab experience, but luckily it hasn’t been an issue so far

Thanks for this! So we have to meet all three criteria to be eligible for need based grants? Do you know if Columbia said if we can still qualify/receive need based grants for other criteria?

No prob! Yes, you need to meet all three criteria.

I don’t think there are any other opportunities for need-based aid unfortunately. Also, if you are offered a need-based grant, you need to accept your federal loan package to get the grant. I’m not sure if this is how it works with every grad program. I’m a little confused about the logistics here.

Overall, it seems like it’s very difficult to get non-merit based assistance from Columbia. I definitely don’t qualify so it’s looking like Columbia is gonna be a no from me 🙁

I clicked on a link on my portal called "Admission Decision" stating that I was admitted and would be receiving a formal email in the next couple of days. My fingers are crossed for ya!

Guys, anyone heard back from Hopkins on the MPH - Online/Part-time program [[for Summer June 2019]] ???

Some info I found on Johns Hopkins admissions board that could answer all of our questions..hope this helps!

"You’ve applied, your application is in review and now you are wondering when to expect a decision. On average, decisions take 8-10 weeks from the time the application is complete, verified and has been sent for review. Once a decision is made, your personalized site will be updated to let you know a decision has been made and a formal notification will be sent via e-mail in the next 24-48 hours.
If your application has been in review for more than ten weeks, Admissions Services recommends you contact your department or program office for an update on their review timeframe."

For those accepted to UMN, the Admitted Students Day has been announced for March 8th - the earliest of most programs. I'll be there! Hopefully, it won't be so cold by then (-28!). I'm in CA.

I'll also be attending the Admitted Students Day! The U is fourth of my top four schools. I'm going to visit the other three, and I decided there's no harm in doing this one because I live like two blocks from the SPH building.

Who knows. Maybe they'll wow me with a phenomenal day. And it's very unlikely to be that cold in March. This winter has been pretty mild up until this week. Hopefully we bounce back to our balmy 40 degree temperatures soon!

Has anyone who’s gotten into BU received their package in the mail yet? I was accepted via email on 12/21 but still nothing in the mail.

Also! "As an FYI to ALL, in order to be considered for need based grants, you MUST have an expected family contribution below $10,000, MUST have borrowed subsidized loans at the undergraduate level and MUST have received pell funding."

Is this information that the schools get from FASFA, or are there supplemental forms that need to be filled out? I just don't remember questions on the FASFA application related to the funding I received in undergrad. I know Harvard had a separate application that asked these more specific questions.

Just the FAFSA!

Hello! Do you recall how long after you got the package after the email? And does this package mean your official acceptance letter and your merit money? Thanks!

The details are fuzzy since I was in major prep mode for the holidays, but I'd say a week or two afterwards. It contained a letter restating the decision and also included the merit money.

If it's been that long, it's likely that it got lost in the mail/delivered to the wrong person/had the wrong address. I would give them a call and let them know, because if you got the acceptance email you should have received the packet.

Thanks so much for the info! I just got my email yesterday, so I will definitely be on the lookout now. Congrats anyways 🙂

Finally accepted to the UofM! Although I don't think I will attend, I am going to still go to their admitted students day. I've also booked my trip to ATL for Visit Emory at the end of March and I'll be touring UNC in March as well. Trying to make pros/cons list for the three schools.
Congrats! Did you get notified through email or portal?

Hopkins has two visit days: 3/8 and 4/5. Definitely going to go to one, just have to figure out which date works best with work! Also, anyone planning on going to Tulane's visit day on 3/15? I'm considering!

Hi everyone!
I know I've seen a few, but is anyone still waiting on JHU's accelerated MPH? Or does anyone know when we might hear? I'm checking my portal about twice a day, but it still says 'sent out for review.'

Thank you all!

Hey all, newcomer to this thread and I am LOVING all the advice and encouragement going on here. Before I post my stats, etc. I just want to say thank you, congrats, and good luck to each of you! Whether we end up classmates or colleagues down the road, I’m proud to be on this journey with so many hard-working and inspiring people.

Also for whoever this helps: I noticed my federal financial aid summary was posted in my Michigan wolverine access page this morning. No email notification about the update or scholarship info from them yet, but fingers crossed we’ll all start getting those final price tags rolling in soon!
