Does anyone have any information on MPH certification? Is it important to become certified?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by MPH certification.

Are you asking it it's important for a MPH program to be accredited by the Council on Education of Public Health (CEPH)? Yes.

I was wondering about how important it is to take the certification test and become certified in Public Health. Do employers want/expect people with MPHs to become certified? At this point it is voluntary.

The only thing I've really heard from both schools that I've attended is that they don't make an official recommendation either way. My take is that until you see employers require the certification (you'll see on job postings if the certification is required), don't waste your time with it. It may become necessary, it may not, it's still a very new test.

I have seen a few jobs that require either CHS or CHES certification but not very many. Given that the CHS test in particular costs over $400 to take it's probably not worth it. If you are in health education the CHES exam is a closer call since it cost about half as much.

The CPH certification is very new so most employers don't know about it. I'm CHES which has been around for 50 years and many outside of public health field (like HR, physicans, people who may be interviewing/hiring you) don't know about it. The most important thing is that your program is certifed by CEPH, if it is your coursework will give you the knowledge to pass the CPH test should you decide to take it. If you are interested in behavior change/ health education then you need to consider taking the CHES exam. The best scenario would be to wait until you have a public health related job and so that your employer can pay for the exam.

Those are my thoughts also. I'm not opposed to taking any exam my employer wants if they are paying for it. As a student though it's just not a high priority compared to my other expenses.
