Hey everyone! I started this thread so that we can discuss the different HPM programs. There is so much to know about each program so I think it is great if we can combine/share our knowledge. This is an opportunity for us to ask questions and bounce ideas off each other!

I have created a small template that I filled out below. Feel free to use it/add more!

Applied: UW, Tulane, GW, Emory, UCLA, Berkeley, Columbia
Accepted: Tulane, Emory, GW
Waitlisted: UCLA
Rejected:

Interests:
Healthy equity, immigrant health, data-driven initiatives
Leaning Towards: GW, UW

Questions/Things I am thinking about:
  1. Obviously I think GW would have a great program, but it isn't ranked very high...I would imagine the GW HPM program is the exception to the rule...
  2. I live in Washington so if I get into UW I would love to go but I am unsure about the program here...anyone have any thoughts? I haven't seen many people in the thread who applied to UW. Why or why did you not apply?
  3. Emory: what are everyones thoughts about Emory's health policy program? I know Emory is a great school however I feel like its location (ex. being close to CDC) benefits Epi people more than policy people.

hey ceeeal! you already heard back from UCLA? I'm still waiting for the decision to come out 🙁

I just got an email a few hours ago. I know that some others had heard back in January. 🙁 They are probably still releasing decisions though, so there is probably a chance! You never know!😉

Personally, I wasn't really into UCLA so I am not too bummed about getting on the waitlist. Is UCLA your preferred school?

I got accepeted in UAB HPM program
whats your opinion for UAB HMP program

Applied: UW, GW, Oregon State, Colorado, Johns Hopkins, UCLA
Accepted: GW, Oregon, Colorado, Hopkins, UCLA
Rejected:

Interests:
health care reform, coverage, health costs
Leaning Towards: UCLA and Johns Hopkins

Questions/Things I am thinking about:
  1. UCLA is technically my cheapest option tuition-wise since I live in LA, but the cost of living here is so high. And UCLA is a full time program for 2 years, including the internship. But UCLA does have great connections in terms of the management track since many health system executives are involved with the program.
  2. I'm really leaning towards Hopkins, because of the name and the networking opportunities in the DC area. But I am hesitant about that price tag and the intensity of the program!

I'm planning to go to both Admitted Students Day and I'm sure that it will help me out a lot!!

Applied: Johns Hopkins (MPH), Harvard (MPH), Columbia (MPH), Princeton (MPA)
Accepted: Hopkins, Columbia
Rejected:

Interests:
health care reform, health economics, health equity
Leaning Towards: Hopkins and, if good news comes, Princeton (staying near Philadelphia is paramount)

Questions/Things I am thinking about:
  1. Would a two year MPA program at Princeton serve me better than a one year accelerated MPH program at Hopkins? Especially if I'm changing fields and just coming off of an arduous PhD process? (currently finishing up my PhD in biomedical sciences)
  2. Is getting a more general policy degree (the MPA) better than focusing solely on a health policy MPH if I want to have a career focused on health policy analysis but hope to understand it in a greater context of social structures and political history?
  3. Which school has the best quantitative/economic courses that teach me applicable skills? I'm sure they are all great, but if we're to focus on domestic health policy with an eye toward comparative health systems and health system reform, which faculty does a better job of that?
  4. What will Princeton's financial aid package look like if I get accepted? Their site says 80% of students get tuition covered and a stipend...

I'm planning to go to Hopkins' Admitted Students Day, at which point I'll have found out about my Princeton decision.

Applied: Drexel, Oregon (OHSU), Colorado, Austin, UIC- (All Health Policy), Dartmouth (MS in Health Services Research)
Accepted: Drexel
Rejected:

Interests:
health care reform, health economics, outcomes research, policy
Leaning Towards: Drexel-- even though it's been my only acceptance so far, I like how community-based the program is and ideally I'd like to end up working in hospital administration in Philadelphia.

Questions/Things I am thinking about:
1. Any insider info regarding Drexel? I love the curriculum but I like to talk to students that are actually IN the program.
2. On the same note, any insider info regarding ANY of the programs I applied to would be fantastic.

I was accepted into UW's MHA program, Emory's HPM program and Drexel's HPM program. I am currently leaning towards UW but I am pretty torn about the differences between MHA and MPH. Also, I have heard Emory isn't too great when it comes to financial aid.

Does anyone know much about the Health Services program at UW? I just got in and would love to know everyone's thoughts! I am mainly interested in Health Policy and would like to know how you think UW compares to place like Emory or GW.

I've had the same thoughts as you, since I'm also interested in health policy. GW might be a better choice due to the location and access we have. Although UW has a fantastic program, I'm skeptical about their strength in health policy...I feel that they would be strong on a state program level though. However I'll admit that when I spoke with a professor there a while back, I totally fell in love. It sounds like they really give their students a lot of opportunities and the professors are very accessible. Plus I love Seattle! Unfortunately, I think I'll be turning down UW because the out of state tuition is 80k :greedy:.

Totally. I am instate so it is really tempting. I posted the same question on the main thread on got this response from pnw_penguin13 if anyone is interested:

I did my undergrad at UW in global health and have worked within the school of public health the last three years. UW health services has great affiliations with organizations within the Seattle area and also a great international focus if you want to move into global health.

I'd say UW is strongest for global health (very close connections with Gates Foundation) and anything cancer related (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance). Other great organizations in include Group Health's Research Institute and UW's hospital system that serves the majority of the pacific northwest.

If you are interested in the global health side, Seattle has become a new hub of global health organizations:
  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • PATH
  • I-Tech
  • Health Alliance International
  • Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation

Hey guys did you receive your financial aid packages from UW yet? Did you get notified via an email to your UW Net ID account? I created one and have only gotten a letter saying UW has my FAFSA under review and will email me back when my financial aid is decided. Thanks
