Hi everyone

So I was invited to interview for their onsite day at the U Mich. I was wondering has anyone else done this? It is specifically for policy and management...

If anyone has please feel free to respond or to email me!
I was wondering what the interview was like and what type of questions they asked. Also, if you had any pointers as to help me to ace the interview!

Thanks so much!
Good luck to all and congrats to those accepted!

Lodato,
I'm in the exact same boat, and would love to hear some thoughts on the visit-day. For anyone pm-ing Lodato, could you add me to the message as well? Or post here? Thanks in advance!

wow, I got accepted about a week agao. But my concentration is Epi, so they just need my final decision.

I had my interview at U of M for the HMP program recently. It was very low-key. I think it really depends on your faculty member. My interviewer basically started off by asking me to talk about my academic background and my interest in public health, and then he/she basically answered a bunch of my questions and talked about the program. It could very much depend on who is interviewing you. But I'd be prepared to talk about:

- Why U of M?
- Why HMP?
- Talk about your academic background and work experience in the area of public health.
- Have somewhat of a vision of what you want to do after school.
- Have a lot of questions to ask to show interest in the school, but also to show that you have done your research on the school.

I can provide more specific feedback via private message if you would like.

(I think it was quite annoying not to know who the faculty interviewer is beforehand. It's nice to be able to research the person a bit.)

I did this last year. It is only for HPM people and it is, from what I could find out, a second step in the admission procedure as in not everyone gets an interview and then not everyone who gets an interview gets admitted.

The whole event though was very low key. People dressed nice, but the faculty member I talked to was very nice and a lot of the stuff was way more informational like an admitted students day would be. We got to go to a class and eat lunch with current students. Nice time overall (just fyi: i ended up getting into HPM at Michigan but didn't end up going there)

Hi everyone who has responded:

Thank you for your help as I really do appreciate it! I am still a bit nervous about the entire ordeal and do not think that I can memorize the entire faculty and their work... I will try my best though!

Wish me luck and best of luck to the rest of you interviewing! Hopefully we all get in and can change the world to make it a better place!

Good luck and thanks!

So I must first state that I had an unconvential interview but worthwhile as I found it very helpful and wonderful.

Dress to impress- everyone else is and so should you.

Be prepared to be on your toes- the entire day is a feel out day.

Ask diligent questions about the program, the school, etc.

Know yourself and know if this is something you REALLY want to do.

How I said, my interview was very informal and unconvententional. We discussed life instead and other topics. In the end, I was perceived as a strong candidate by my interviewer but am still waiting to hear back if I was rejected or not.

The rest of the day: a lot of presentations, discussions, informal chats with students and faculty, and lunch. Get to know your peers- they're wonderful and as passionate as you are. I made 2 wonderful friends while there in my short visitation day.

And my biggest tip of advice for anyone going into this interview: first, love yourself (be confident with who you are and your weaknesses and strenghts- know yourself), be sure this is what you want to do, and be yourself. They get brilliant potential candidates ALL the time...so they know you're good if you're there for the interview. So show them what YOU got to offer.

Any other questions, please feel to PM me!

Thanks!

I finished my interview about a week and a half ago, and was accepted to U of M's HMP Department yesterday. The MPH and MHA interviews days are coordinated together, so there was about 11 people that interviewed with me. Each person has a different schedule but the interview is fairly brief and depends on which faculty member actually interviews you. Some are more laid back, while others are more serious. My best advice is to just be confident about why you're there and what you want to gain from this program. Also be confident about what you as a student will add to the program. Dress nicely, be pleasant, and ask great questions because they are looking at you for the entire visit day, not just the actual interview.

Thank you and congratulations. I'm really nervous because I was invites two days after my file was completed, late January, but my visit day is in March. I've not heard from any other school as well.

@mphplease,

Yeah that's really normal. I interviewed about a month after I got an invitation. The dates are on a rolling basis so that later you apply, the later you interview. I submitted my application in November, was invited to interview in Januaury, and actually interviewed early February.
