I was wondering if there was anyone that had received their MPH before applying to DO schools, and if you think it helped you? I had previously applied to only allopathic schools and didn't get in the first time, but now I'm really into the idea of DO school. My undergrad gpa wasn't that good (3.2) but my MCAT is decent (30), and now I will have an MPH. So I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences?

I knew someone with a similar story. She only applied MD the first time, didn't get in and then got her MPH and applied only DO and got in. She may have gotten into a DO school the first time if she had applied to them so I don't know if the MPH helped her or not. She said she thought it would be a great thing to have later on after she gets out of med school.

With your stats, great LORs and ECs, great essay you should have no problems getting into a DO schools and maybe even an MD school if you reapply with the addition of the Masters and the grades you got in that program.

Thanks for sharing, it makes me feel a little better. I also think the mph will be useful later on, being a doctor.

Anyone else?

i'm also getting my mph. my friends who applied with an mph said it helped but you really have to defend why an mph is not enough. i agree with you that it will make me a better doctor.

You had a 3.2 gpa and a 30 on your MCAt and did not getin to ned school?? Did you do any EC's?? Where did you get your MPH, how long did it take, and did you like the program? I would apply to both allopathic and DO hedge your bets hehe. Good Luck Bro!

I had an MPH before med school, as did 2 others in my class. We all had jobs using the degree before med school, though.

An MPH usually helps your app, but I generally recommend that people get the degree because they want it, not just for an application booster. I recommend that you think out an answer to "how will the MPH add to your practice of medicine" or some similar questions in case you're asked in your interviews. 🙂

sorry i dont know how to do those quote boxes....

"you really have to defend why an mph is not enough"

i agree. i wasn't really expecting the mph to make me a shoe-in. i was generally interested in the program and what can be done with an mph. i think the mph has been good for me in that, i take classes that are applicable to a medical career, but also get really good experiences and opportunities outside the classroom.

Yes, I didn't get into an allopathic medical school the first time around. Yes, I did have extra-curriculars, but after being in this public health program, I have even more and better ones. I'm getting my mph at drexel, its a 2 year program, and I like it for the most part.

Well, I am graduating this spring from my program, and I am in the process of applying right now. So I won't have had a long-term job with it, but this summer I am doing an internship through the Maternal and Child Health Bureau for the federal government. I've also done research and another short internship while in school. I think that is good advice, about how the mph will add to practicing medicine. Thanks!

That internship will help. It will also give you some different stuff to talk about in interviews. Anything to make you stand out (positively) in the memory of the interviewers is good. 🙂

btw: at the bottom right of each post is a quote button...that's how you get the spiffy quote boxes 😀
