Mph?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Public health positions can be had, and an MPH could possibly earn you a higher salary as a beginning associate, or make you more qualified for certain practice positions. This might depend on where you are looking to practice.

SIDENOTE: my 2700th post. Yippeeee.

an mph is a great thing to obtain.
i'll be finishing up my mph this next summer.
im a first year at columbia (SDOS)
my mph pursuit got me in.
i plan on doing ENDO with my mph
mph=qualification to work with population dynamics.
ie.
old people will be largest population for next 20+ years (babyboomers)

what does that mean for me?
qualified to handle the soon to be crisis with old people and their root canals.
oh yeah. the money factor as well. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?
teefpulla!

But what if I just want to own my own practice? Will the MPH help me then?

I understand that it can help when serving in a type of public possition, but how can it help the general dentist? It won't make my skills any better, right?

Just wondering...

No, it won't make your skills better at all. If you only want to practice in private, and have no desire to serve on community boards, ADA boards, hospital boards, etc., then I'd say it won't help at all.

That isn't to say it won't awake you to some real problems in healthcare, but I'm going to venture to say that such an awakening isn't any good if you have no plan to act on it.

Gavin,

Please don't get me wrong. In fact I do hope to be involved in such a capacity someday.

The reason I asked so specifically is because all I kept hearing was that the MPH was "good" to get. But WHY is it good? Now I know. So thanks!

BTW, how are those interviews coming in AZ? Even though you hear the same story from every applicant (as you mentioned in previous posts)? It has to feel good knowing that in some small way you are helping to shape the school, not only by being part of it yourself, but playing a small role in the personality of next year's class.

I just met you at a pedo interview - upenn

holy back from the dead, batman. 🙂

Well, I didn't mean to be random, but I had remembered this thread for some time, knowing that the guy had switched to pedo and then when I realized it was him at the interview, I couldn't believe that I had met an "I care about $, but I am going to pretend that I care about kids" person in the flesh!👎

I am currently obtaining my MPH (1 more semester) and I think it benefits those who wish to interact with and understand the needs of diverse communities. There are more factors involved but I am biased toward this particular benefit.

I agree with your view of the benefits. "Teefpulla" outright said he was doing his to get into endo for the $ and then I met him at a pedo interview (so I guess he wants the $ from pedo now instead - disheartening for those who do the mph for the true benefit of being a patient advocate, etc)
