What schools are known to accept students who may be fresh out of undergrad?

r3kapur,

Indeed there are Public Health institutions that only accept professional folks (i.e., Harvard, JHU), but for the most part, I think you can get in almost anywhere that doesn't have a stringent requirement for work experience (esp. if you've got nice GRE scores).

Some student-friendly places I got accepted to included:
UPitt, Boston University, University of Michigan (my alma mater), &
George Washington. I also know a lot of folks in my fellowship program now that went straight-outta-undergrad to Tulane, St. Louis, Yale & Minnesota as well.

Not from experience, but I think some of the UCs (like Berkeley) are pretty friendly... other thoughts?

Heal and Teach, your avatar blows.

r3kapur,
Good luck with the public health programs and let me know if you have any questions about the programs at Columbia, Yale, JHU or BU. I have a MHS from JHSPH right out of undergrad (not the same as MPH). I got into the other schools.

You have any idea of the average gpa and gre scores accepted to UMiches program?

Hey now... watch the insults... 🙁 I've got nothing but love for everyone 😍

Actually greenie, what yr did you graduate? Maybe you know some of the folks in my program...

That was a good question RE: stats for UM. Unfortunately, I don't think they're published anywhere. I guess it also depends on the program you're applying to as well. I've known people with a large range of GPAs and GREs, but I think it's relatively safe to say that the school is not taking GREs below 500 (in each section).. usually mid-500s (at the lowest) and above.

U of Minnesota is undergrad-friendly from what I can see. The people in my classes were a mix of MD's (a few PhDs, DVMs, etc) going back, some fellows (nephrology, oncology), some people with lots of work experience, and some straight out of undergrad (like me).

Hello,

So I've been looking more into MPH programs. Many say you can substitute MCAT scores for the GRE. Has anybody done this? Now my MCAT is not stellar:

first attempt: 6v/12p/11b/Ow
second attempt: 7v/10p/11b/Qw

How do you guys think this would reflect on me? The low verbal score? Is the GRE taken to the same level in admissions to MPH as the MCAT is for med. school? Would you think these scores would make me competitive if I could give a clear outline of my intentions for MPH or should I just look into writing the GRE?

take the gre, its much easier. or, at least take it, and see how you do.

I can speak a little to the Yale MPH program as an alumnus ... entered in right after college (used my MCAT score of 33 in lieu of GRE ... GRE scores were pretty high on average for the school) but was among the youngest in the class (most take time off and get work experience first, and they are beginning to admit fewer straight from undergrad) ... Yale's program is really strong in health policy and microbial disease epidemiology ... the health management tract is with the School of Management (Business school) ... some depts are definitely stronger than others ... the really cool thing about Yale's program is that you can very easily take classes anywhere in the university ... I took classes at the law school and in econ to tailor my focus (and that stuff is thoroughly encouraged) ... hope this helped, and if not, feel free to ask any more detailed questions

Epidemiologists rock and SAS is king 😛
