its been so exciting to hear about this years class going through the match -- excited but scared for it to begin being our turn. any third years want to share where they are doing rotations next year? maybe some of us will catch up with each other on rotations (and hopefully interviews!).

I have my core ER booked in august. planning on anes at SLU in september, critical care anes at UKY in october, and louisville anes in november. not all set up yet but that is what I have in the works. thinking about mcg and some of the pittsburgh programs. anyone else set anything up yet? thinking about...?

Still trying to set up away rotations (hopefully its not too late...). I definitely know what you mean about eagerly following the current match though...one more year...

MS-3 here. I was planning to do one in Sept (not sure where yet) maybe pitt or CCF and UH in October. Havent submitted anything yet but will shortly if I get the time

You are going to want letters from your anesthesia rotations. You can start turning them in during september, maybe try to do an anesthesia rotation earlier if possible. Don't freak out and panic if you can't, but if it is an easy change to make, earlier may be better.

My school doesn't start 4th year until sept. (stupid I know ) but I will have done a month of anesthesia before fourth year starts so I already have my letter.

I'm currently trying to set up a rotation at Penn in August. I haven't applied yet, but Ochsner in September is the plan.

I'm currently looking in to applying to a couple of programs in the southeast with hopes of getting in 2 aways before Mid-Oct (to get letters, and make 100% sure anesthesia is the way to go for me).

My school limits us to eight weeks out of state, so I am splitting that between Texas and Florida. Next year at this time, hopefully we will all have matched. I already have my anesthesia rec. letters requested. Best of luck with getting rotations.

It's March -- you guys are in the prime time to apply for away rotations. Get those applications in now, as I think they tend to fill between March and June -- by July-August I've known people applying who found it very hard to get a rotation at all (at least in the places where they wanted to) -- so you are catching it at a good time. Good luck!

Yes, get them in as soon as possible. They fill very fast, and can be very key to help a borderline applicant match.

Good luck.

Do you think you absolutely have to do an away rotation? I am barely able to squeeze in a rotation at my own school. I am not sure how I could do one away, and still be in time for October. Also, does it look odd to have three anesthesia roations in a row? I was thinking of also doing EM/IM just to round out my early application.

No, I don't think you absolutely have to do an away rotation. If you're an average (that means pretty decent) candidate, you will do fine whether you do an away or not.

Although there are a few people who do this, I think that yes, this does look odd. I actually did one home and two aways, and when I was on the interview trail one program director questioned my reasons for the third one.

You definitely do not need to do an away rotation if you are an average of above candidate (avg class rank, 225+ step 1, decent LORs, from allopathic US school). 3 rotations does seem like overkill. you're going to do this the rest of your life. I think 2 is perfect. If you have to do three anesthesia related things, your third month should be ICU IMHO.

On a good place in the southeast to do an away rotation EARLY (july, aug, sept.)??. I've been digging around online and most of the places aren't accepting apps yet, or dont have a form available online. Also, I am hindered by the fact that my school has 300K/600K insurance coverage and Wake/Duke require 1mil/3mil ECK!

Vanderbilt?

the only away rotation I did was trauma ICU at shock trauma hospital in baltimore (awesome month). I didn't actually even do an adult anesthesia rotation at my OWN school- just peds (my mentor is the chair of peds).

the only important part of that is I had solid scores and letters, and definitely 100% knew I wanted to do anesthesia. have FUN 4th year.

UAB. The didactic setup is amazing. The hospital and faculty are as well, and you will be able to land some sweet letters.

Not to mention the program rocks.

I will be at Mayo (Rochester) in July. I'm only doing one away rotation.

so no concerns about getting good exposure in July with the new CA-1's coming in to the OR at the same time?? I have been told this is a concern by some, while at the same time I think it may be beneficial in that the environment may be one more conducive to learning, as you watch the CA-1s begin to learn a ton quickly. I want exposure ASAP, so July will work best for me, provided, I don't get bumped, and people don't talk me out of it 🙂.

UAB, Emory, Vandy, Ochsner (NO), KY all great

UF??, So. Car??

Take a look at Ochsner. All their residents are uber happy. They have a nightfloat system where every 2 months or so, you do 1 week of nights only. You work 7 straight days from 7pm to 7am. Then you get the next week off. Yes, completely off. Your regular non-nightfloat days are 6am-3pm, and you work 1-2 weekend days a month.

If they let you do it, then rotate in July.

I know that UAB has an excellent extern prog, I've heard Vandy has a nice setup too.

IF you want to go to Ochsner, then do an away. During interviews, they basically told us that if you haven't rotated with them, you won't get in.

So, do it. Great program, great benefits, nice setup.

I am planning on U of Arizona in Sept and up in the air in October a la KY or UNM. Really feel like I am shooting blindfolded, but until you really try a new place, I guess you will never know if it is the right one for you. I am really excited about improving my sub-par chances of matching at at least 2 places this fall. Good luck y'all.

I don't think you should be set up with a CA-1 in July. That wouldn't be a prime learning atmosphere, and most externship directors know this when assigning you a room/resident.

I'll be at U of Chicago in June, U Penn in July. Hope to see/meet some of you guys there.
