I have a couple of questions. I'm looking at externships for next year and I want to do one at a community hospital GS program because that's what I'm looking at for residency. I don't necessarily need an "audition rotation" somewhere specific - I just want to see what a community hospital is like. Any suggestions for good places to try to go?

Also, can I use a letter that I get from this community hospital externship as one of my LOR in residency applications?

Thanks for your help!

Of course you can use the LOR from a community hospital as part of your residency applications.

Where do you want to do your rotation - stay in Colorado, or how far are you willing to go?

I'm in med school in St. Louis, but I'm willing to go anywhere. I was looking at Santa Barbara Cottage, mostly cuz they have free housing and a food stipend. But I'd really go anywhere.

What I found to be a big issue in planning away electives was money. You'll find that many academic programs won't do much to accomodate your room and board....but there are many community programs that will offer you free room and board, or at least reasonably priced housing options. If you're not specifically auditioning somewhere, I'd pick a community program that's either somewhere where you have family/friends to stay with, or somewhere that offers free housing.

Good advice from SLUser11 - if you don't have any specific designs on a program, a place with a good rep (like SB Cottage) which gives you some financial perks would be a good idea.

You should try St. Joseph Hosptial in Denver if you are from Colorado.
