I just checked the MSAR and it seems to have all stats from this past cycle. New update also lets you compare in-state vs. out-of-state stats. Interesting change, the differences between IS vs OOS aren't as big as I thought they would be for a lot of public schools.

Also it looks like nearly every school went up in stats.
New average MCAT of accepted student = 511
New average GPA of accepted student = 3.76

Lol - too bad you can't delete threads. I've made that silly mistake too

Ill repost my question: When you purchase the MSAR, is it only active for a certain amount of time? It says I no longer have access

Yeah it's not a one-time purchase, but I don't know the length of how long it lasts. I'd assume roughly 1 application cycle?

Well doesn't that suck. Looking at the preview though it looks like its still 2017 data though, no?

I think I'm seeing some changes. ie. BU's class 190 -> 172, MCAT 517 -> 518, etc etc etc...maybe they just didnt update the preview?

They also added a couple of the new schools, e.g. Seton Hall, California University

How can they know the stats of matriculants if traffic day hasn't happened yet?

Most schools went up ~1-3 MCAT points, some stayed the same.
GPA seems to be +/- ~.2 -- some went up, some down, some the same.
Some schools made big jumps - UCLA went from a 508 to a 517.

I'd assume matriculation stats are from last year, but they still have the accepted stats so we know who the schools are taking.

Wow. Seems like all my reach schools increased their median MCAT by 3-5points.

Average MCAT of accepted students nationally now 511, was 509.

Not surprised at the MCAT creep. Lots of numbers dropped with the switch to the new exam, I guess because people didn't know what was equivalent between scales. Now everyone is drifting back up to where the old numbers were.

UCLA in particular is crazy, that must have been a conscious "oops we made a mistake last cycle treating a 30/508 as high enough for us"

Another possibility is that they may have excluded stats from CDU..??

Seems like the schools that were already the most competitive had the largest increase in median stats.

Drew is such a tiny group compared to the overall UCLA enrollment, there's just no way it changes their median by 10 points
Never knew how big is that group. Thanks!

Huh, looks like my subscription expired. One less thing to waste time on I really hope I can stalk this thread for all the updates
ugh story of my life

I'm a little confused how the MCAT's are creeping up so much. Isn't the MCAT normalized to 500 each year? There should be roughly the same percentage of people scoring 510+ and 520+ every year? Were these applicants previously not being accepted?

The previous MSAR was missing a lot of information because many of the applicants at that time had still taken the old MCAT and the previous MSAR showed only the new mcat score medians and percentiles.

Trying to buy the new MSAR and it says that I'm not eligible to buy it. Anyone else getting this error?

Maybe, but that doesn't explain why the score creep is most visible for top schools

This makes so much sense! So the magic 508 is now being replaced with 511 I assume...

For Wright State the median accepted instate MCAT is 508 while OOS is 501. This seems really weird for a public state school. Like they hold OOS people to LESS standards than their instate and just want to recruit OOS who really fit their mission.

How do we see the OOS vs. IS mcat medians? I can't find it for some reason

JK just found it. There's a drop-down menu under acceptance data if anyone else can't find it

We should all keep in mind that the first year schools accepted students with the 2015 MCAT, only about 1/3 of the applicants had taken the new MCAT and the median scores at each school represent only 1/3 of the applicants. This new information from the 2017 application period likely represents approximately 2/3 of applicants to each school (as approximately 2/3 of the applicants had taken the new 2015 MCAT). This is what I have heard from a few schools and explains why some scores seems so skewed the first year they used the new MCAT.

So does that mean we should panic more?

Is this update legit? I’ve had MSAR for a while now and I can’t believe UCLA’s median mcat skyrocketed from 508 to 517 in just one application cycle. Any thoughts??
Very likely a correction from last year when it inexplicitly dropped by about the same amount. It is back where it would typically be.

Seems legit. Most of the schools changed quite a bit. On a positive note, I can eliminate a bunch of schools from my application because they are no longer realistic. Saves me a couple hundred and false hopes.

The 521 Club
Yale, WashU, Vandy, NYU
And for 520, add UPenn, Northwestern, U Chicago, JHU,

I've had to spend the past 30 mins updating my recommendation file!

It's an arms race out there. I predict we'll see similar stats creep for the DO schools as well.

EDIT: still mulling over the stats. Who'd ever think that Western MI would be nipping at the heels of Keck in terms of median stats????!!!!

Jefferson is also creeping up and away from the other two members of the Philly Triplets. We live in interesting times.

bahahahahahahahahahahaha. UCLA walkin in like "yo, arent we being holistic now???"

all other medical schools: "nah, we good."

NYU, neck deep in cocaine: "wHaT the f*** is A holistic"

One should also keep in mind that UCLA accepts < 1% of its applicants from outside of CA. This is Baylor territory in terms of IS friendliness.

I always hear stories about older physicians saying there is no way they'd get into school if they applied now. It gave me a sense of accomplishment for getting the seat I have. Now, I'm thinking maybe I'll be saying the same thing come 10 years. I truly wonder what the applicant of the future will have to do, and if the system really is producing better physicians or not.
spoilers: it wont

This is what it says on the UCLA Geffen website:

"Residence

No preference is given to state of residence. However many applicants come from California. Acceptees from California are more likely to matriculate at UCLA. Out of 175 freshman, approximately 85 percent were from California."

There are a LOT of talented Californians! The Golden State is the largest net exporter of medical students. UCLA pre-meds alone could fill every medical school in the state.

This spillover helps even my school (as well as a lot of the other DO schools west of the Missouri River). Given the choice of going to, say, Drexel or Miami, people who'd like to stay closer to home end up at these DO schools.

the following information was revealed to me in a dream

do a search and find the 2018 one - notice that when you click "subscribe" it brings you to the 2017 one

UCLA should never have been at 508. if i remember correctly their matriculated MCAT for that year was a 505. uCLA is a tier 1 school

That’s still a crazy jump in just one app cycle! I wonder what led to the +9 point higher mcat this year. More 4.0/528 applicants? Or just more picky admin committee?
