MSAR Updated

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looking at the updated MSAR, I've noticed that the median matriculant MCAT is 1-3 points below the median accepted MCAT, for a lot of schools. So which one is better to use, for school selection purposes? Any input is appreciated.

I think accepted should be used to make your list. The matriculation data may be a way to look at if you have a chance of getting in off the waitlist, but I wouldn't bank on those stats for an acceptance.

The numbers for how many people took the MCAT in recent years are difficult to find, but I believe it's close to 100k per year - or at least 100k test administrations per year. In 2013, around 95k MCATs were administered (https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fast...dcc3-49d4-bbde-2ded03bbadd4/combined13pdf.pdf). In 2015, around 60k new MCATs were administered (https://www.aamc.org/download/454206/data/mcatatglance2015.pdf), but between 2015-16 150k new MCATs were administered (https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fast...ction_score_percentile_ranks_2017_for_web.pdf). So in 2016 it seems that 150k - 60k = 90k exams were administered. I suspect around 100k MCATs were administered in 2017, though I am not sure. AAMC will release more data in May.
Okay you've got me thoroughly convinced . I'm definitely curious to see how high this national median can creep up if schools continue to pull for higher and higher numbers.

Are first author publications really that exceptional? Would it be worth pushing an app cycle back a year for if you were working on one but it wasn't it published yet? Or could you inform the schools of it when it happens?
I would also like to know this

Can someone tell me the change in Mean for UIC and SLU.

Unfortunately I don't have the data for the the previous year, but SLU now has a median of 513 for accepted students and 512 for matriculated students. If someone remembers the data from last year, you can determine the change.

Last Year UIC & SLU both were 512/510 A/M. I am still not sure how they can put matriculated # for 2018 since we still have few weeks left for Traffic Day and even after Traffic Day there is movement from WL.
But looks like SLU move +1/+2 A/M and UIC stays the same.

The MSAR data released is data for those who applied to matriculate in 2017 not this year. The previous MSAR had data from those who applied to matriculate in 2016...

These are for the current MS-1 class - not for our application cycle. This makes it more confusing. So the data we were using to make decisions was from this year's MS-2s

Can anyone comment on updated VCU data?

I prefer using matriculant GPA. it tells you more about the ranges of the actual accepts. Obviously schools aim to get the highest stats, but those people clearly go elsewhere when you see the matriculant GPAs go down a point or two.

I kinda wonder though if they MCAT factors in post-interview? I know some schools only look at it when making interview decisions while others are MCAT-blind for interview decisions but then use it when making offer decisions

Hmmm I’m thinking that interview remarks and letters of Rec would be stronger factors over GPA/MCAT when it comes to post-interview decisions, but I believe stats will still be reviewed. It was my impression that most (if not all) schools would review the entire app one more time before making a final decision.

If schools are beginning to be more selective stats wise based on MSAR, then I’m getting pretty nervous for the schools I’m WL at the moment. :nailbiting:

The Texas med schools went wayyy up in median mcat, boy am I anxious now 🙂

Any data for the new CA school (CUSM/CalMed) yet?
