MSPE...then interviews?

Any idea if MSPE are needed for interview offers? I have zero interviews so far. Doing emergency medicine. I know it's early, but just curious. Seemed like only DOs are interviewing in the emergency medicine thread, and other specialties.

I think most programs in EM are waiting for the MSPE. I know I would if I was a PD since it is only 2 weeks after ERAS submission. But, some programs are sending out invites, just not that many. I have just one interview on the MD side of things for EM so don't worry they will come.

Agree with the above. It seems like every specialty is handling the MSPE differently; some seem to be happy to review the app and give invites without it, and others are preferring to wait. As always every specialty goes at their own pace, so don't worry--I'm sure you'll catch up to your friends soon enough 🙂

I think the key is just to look at where people are getting interviews. If you didn't apply to those places, it's obviously irrelevant. If you did apply to those places, either you aren't in their first tier or, much more likely, they just happened to see/get-to their interviews before yours.

Also EM, no interviews yet. Programs have only had our apps for a week. Hell, I imagine many of us still have missing LoRs/SLoRs / the MSPE isn't viewable yet / etc.

I have a few interviews as an allopathic 4th year applying to EM.

Here's what I can tell you. When I signed up for my interviews, nearly all of the dates were still open. Most programs aren't starting interviews until around Oct 24 for MDs. You need to check your email often (starting now). One of my invites had online scheduling. They mass emailed the invite and it was first-come, first-serve.

One thing to add to this is that you don't know if SDN people are getting interviews to their home programs. A few days ago I was miffed that a guy got an interview at a place I really want to check out, but I later discovered it was his home program. Odds are the program is not even considering outside applications yet.

One question I'd asked in another thread -- with programs listing October 1 as their deadline, does that mean that the application alone needs to be in, or ALL supporting documents need to be in by then?

Three of my four SLoRs/LORs have yet to be uploaded.

One thing to add to this is that you don't know if SDN people are getting interviews to their home programs. A few days ago I was miffed that a guy got an interview at a place I really want to check out, but I later discovered it was his home program. Odds are the program is not even considering outside applications yet.

This is also true of places that people have done away rotations. I got a very informal email telling me available interview dates and asking me to pick one from a place I did an away at. I don't believe they've even reviewed any applications yet.

Just because someone might report an interview invitation somewhere doesn't mean that place is even looking at applications.

Most programs will wait for the MSPE. The MSPE often brings to light more information than the ERAS CV and LOR's. Summative comments from rotations, "red flags" from evaluations, graphs showing grade distributions, and awards often not mentioned are often helpful to selection committees.
In terms of early interviews, most programs will give visiting students the option to interview at the end of their rotation if they are interested.
Be patient.

I think not all programs necessarily require the MSPE if you have a good looking transcript, come from a decent school, have good board scores, all ERAS info, etc. They assume good grades generally means good comments and the exact rank in a class probably isn't important if you are not AOA.

But every program is different and I think early invites are highly dependent on the program and field you are applying to. IM programs with 45 spots to fill need to interview a lot of people while gen surg with 5 spots to fill can be far more selective.
