Hey everyone! I just got an invite for the MD/PhD program at Mayo. I definitely didn't see that one coming. Anyhow, any thoughts?? Does anyone know anything about the program there?

******
Praise the Lord!!

JJ4,
Let me be the first to say CONGRATS! As you can see, all good things to those who wait. I was actually just at U of M for my MSTP interview, so I got a little bit of the scope on Mayo. As you know, it is in Rochester which is kind of a small town. However, I hear the work they do out there is nothing short of phenomenal. I believe someone told me the hospital actually has a wing reserved just for dignitaries since they see so many "regal" people. I also heard they have a competitive program, so you must have impressed someone there!
I am sure you will do fine, so just relax and enjoy!

Rumit: I was just curious of your thoughts on how competitive UCLA was looking this year for MSTP. UCLA is definitely a school I would like to hear from because they have a great program for the PhD I am interested in.

Last year, UCLA went through their initial acceptances and all people on their waitlist, and still didn't fill their 12 spots. It will probably be similar or maybe even better this year. Hope this helps. 😀

Vader,
Thanks for the info. It is always nice to have some insight from someone who has gone through this draining process. Are you in exams right now?

Shogun

shogun:

I got the impression that it wouldn't be real tough to get in there as long as you make the interview cut. Almost everyone I talked to had been to multiple interviews and some already had acceptances and UCLA wasn't generally the first choice school.

Good luck,

Adam

Hey people I got into WashU MSTP. I'm in like gin baby! In like gin. Brian gave me a call and an email today. I am completely thrilled!

JJ4 Congratulations! It's all going to work out. Yep!

Hey SonicHedgehog:

I was going to pull my apps out from every school I applied to save Duke, WashU, Harvard, Hopkins, and Stanford. But then it dawned on me that Hopkins and Stanford might not be friendly to international students. I know you've received interview invites all over the map and you're international. Which of the following schools have invited you for interviews?:

Upenn, Stanford, Hopkins. I know I can get the info I need by doing a thorough search of your previous posts; but I'm too damn lazy. I want to pick 2 out of these 3 so I'll be officially down to 5.

My status looks like this:

UVa (will withdraw)
Columbia(rejected from MSTP will withdraw from MD)
Baylor (will withdraw)
Northwestern (will withdraw)
Vanderbilt (will withdraw)
UAB (withdrawn)
Penn State (withdrawn)
Emory (withdrawn)
Yale (rejected from MSTP will withdraw MD)
U of C (informally accepted; will wait)
Duke (officially accepted; will wait)
WashU (officially accepted; will wait)
Harvard (will interview and wait)
Stanford (Depends)
Hopkins (Depends)
UPenn (Depends)

Hey Sonic tell me something about those 3 "depends" on my list.

does U.Michigan MSTP pay for travel expenses & housing for MSTP interviewees?

chef,

I hope so or I'm not going. My interview is scheduled for Jan 17/18 and I got information that they will reimburse you for travel expenses.

Rumit also confirmed this I think somewhere on this thread, since he's already interviewed there.

Original,

According to the Hopkins website, only US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for the MSTP grant. It also says that this is a federal regulation.

However, I went to the NIGMS website and looked at the MSTP grant description. It doesnt say anything about not funding international students, so I'm not sure if Hopkins' website is correct or not.

But I get the impression that they dont discriminate against internationals just for admission. Hopkins might give international acceptees a different source of funding thats equivalent to MSTP but I'm not sure about that.

U Mich pays for lodging one night and you stay with a student the other night. They reimbursed me for my driving expenses, and I assume they do the same for airline tickets.

Ohh, and on a different note, I got my second MSTP acceptance, from University of Iowa. Now, I just need to hear the same from UCSF and UMich... 🙂

Good luck guys, it's a good school.

Adam

For any of you that have heard anything from Harvard, when (if you got one) did you get an app complete letter. Because I got one last week, but my app should have been complete for months now. I was just wondering how long after the letter people heard about rejections/interviews.

Thanks,

Adam

I dont know of a single person who has gotten a Harvard MSTP interview yet. I never got a letter about my app being complete, but I emailed them and they responded saying my app was complete.

Just like you, my app should have been complete months ago. I think they got backlogged on filing letters of rec with applications.

Original got a Harvard HST interview but its for MD only. I know that there are only 4 MSTP interview dates at Harvard and 2 of them have passed us by already (according to their website).

As for me, I havent heard jack about either a rejection or an interview offer.

Good luck.

"As for me, I havent heard jack about either a rejection or an interview offer."

Hey Baylor21,

Why are you worried about not having heard JACK.... You already got into so many GREAT schools that you're probably going to have a hard time deciding which one to go to. I mean, do you really care if you get more rejections or interviews??????

As a reward, they'll soon be getting 2 more slots; so the program size will be 14 which I think is really awesome!

I just had to pay $318 for my plane ticket to Boston, MA. I'll be going up there on Monday for my HST interview on Tuesday. I think I'll chill out after that and just make as much money as I can between now and Fall. I dont understand how I got so broke 😕 •••

Just out of curiousity, where is this ranking available? Did the people at Duke tell you about it or is it online somewhere?

I just got my official acceptance to Baylor's MSTP! That's #4, considering I sort of got an unofficial acceptance at UofC.

Woohoo!!!... I'm still pretty set on going to Cornell - we'll see if the other schools (WashU, Yale or Hopkins can change my mind!)

Sonic•••

COngrats again! Guess feelings you get from interviewers really don't matter huh!

I was being a little facetious in my post. I'm not really worried or stressed out about it. Assuming I get rejected from every other program I apply to, I still got an acceptance to WashU which was FAR better than I anticipated before I started applying. If you would have told me that I would have gotten in to WashU 6 months ago, I would have been ecstatic and just applied to that school only.

Are you definitely going to WashU? Theres a good chance I will join you there.

Well, I just got moved to the MD pile at Columbia. (i.e. got knocked from the MD/PhD track). Oddly so, my only MD/PhD interview is with the most clinical of programs that I applied to -- Mayo Clinic. I thought I'd at leasthave one basic science slot. I mean there's a lot of basic science and translational research at Mayo so I'm definitely not complaining. Baylor -- you the man. WashU is undoubtedly the best MD/PhD program in the country. I wish I had applied there but I didn't think I had a shot.

Mayo is a great school JJ. Ironically, I didnt apply there because I figured I had no chance to get in.

axlf1997:
Don't mind my post about Duke receiving the highest score on the NIH site visit. I was told that by the admissions people at Duke. Despite the fact that I have no doubts regarding the validity of the claim, such facts are not too important.

I'm currently at Harvard and I'm done with both of my HST interviews. They were great! My interviewers had read EVERY word on my application. Everyone here has been super-nice as well. Anyhow I'm exhausted as is typical of me after these interviews. I'm ready to come home. This will most likely be my last interview. I'll just kick back and chill from henceforth.

Hey one other thing I should mention is that one of my interviewers at Harvard told me that they are REALLY backed up this year. Their admissions personell are having to sort the applications by hand. He said he would have interviewed 14 people by this time in a normal year; but that this year he has only interviewed 2 people. The lady at orientation also said that in a normal year they would have had 20 applicants interviewing during our session; however, there were only 6 of us there. In any case they said they are scared cause they will definitely have to accelerate the process whether they like it or not. Decisions will also be mailed out later than in normal years. Lets hear it for AMCAS people!!!

JJ4: Congrats and good luck on your Mayo interview! I know a Berkeley alum who should be in his 5th year in the MD-PhD program there and he really digs it. He's doing some cool Alzheimer stuff...everything from basic to clinical research.

Woohoo! I got an acceptance at U Mich. That was really quick, just about two weeks turn around time. Wow, the acceptances are finally starting to roll in 🙂 Now, I'm just hoping I hear from UCSF MD admissions. Apparently they sent out the first round of acceptances on Monday. Of course, even if accepted I wouldn't know about MD/PhD until April. But, it would definitely be cool. Ahh...well...it's been a good day so far.

Later all,

Adam

Hi Shogun,
We had our block final exam on the cardiovascular system about 1.5 weeks ago and then had a one-week Clinical Interlude in which we got to experience the in-patient setting in hospitals around San Francisco. I was assigned to a Medicine team at a private hospital and had a great time. It definitely increased my interest in the clinical side of things!

Best of luck to you!

And happy holidays to all! 😀

Wow Adam!
You're kicking some ass meeen! Congratulations. Multiple acceptances are popping up all over this thread already. I can only imagine how insane it will be by April. UMich is a power house. Congratulations, good luck, and happy holidays to everyone!!!

Hi ADAM-
Congrats on UMich! And good luck on hearing from UCSF MD. Is the UCSF MSTP your top choice?
-MaPKiNKSTeR

Of those of you who are accepted to schools already. Isn't there like a school that you have not heard from (post interview) that you really want to go to. This is me and Einstein. I have been accepted to Buffalo and Boston U, but would rather go to Einstein. So people, if any of you interviewed there but didnt like it or something else, call in and close your file. I am doing the same right now for other schools. I think it would be nice if all of us got into the school that we want to go to.

Hey Refuter,
When did you interview at BU and when/how did you get your acceptance? I interviewed there for MD/PhD on end of november, and have been waiting since then...

I dont remember, but I think I was at the beginning of november. I had a lot of interviews, so i tend to confuse them all.
But, yes, i got my letter, dated December 10th yesterday. Originally it was my top choice.

For those who have interviewed at Penn MSTP already....

I'm assuming that they DO NOT use rolling admissions? When is their decision date, is it the same as the regular MD program?

Speaking of UPenn...

I cancelled my Jan interview by phone earlier in the week and received an email from the program director yesterday. He asked if my decision to cancel was primarily financial and, if so, they would help with travel expenses.

I thought this might be nice information for anyone planning to interview there in the coming months. Maybe you can ask them to cover some costs...because they didn't offer it up front in their email interview notification.

Anyhow, I declined the offer...so hopefully one of you can benefit!

Thanks, and congrats to you on the UCSF acceptance. That's what I'm looking for. I think it's my first choice, although I'm not 100% sure. I'm a little worried though, because looking back, one of my interviews wasn't that great. UCSF was one of my first interviews, and my interview with the clinician, a pediatrician, was a little off. I don't think he liked me. Anyhow, no point in worrying now.

Again, congrats, and good luck with making your choice.

Adam

Congrats Rumit for getting into UMich!!!!

Hey guys,
My application has been complete at UCSF since 10/22 and I have not heard anything yet. What do you guys think I should do??? I am applying for their MD/PhD program, but is that true that the MD has to give me an interview first before the MSTP looks at my application??????

I believe so, yes. Sucks, doesn't it?

Good luck,

Hey Sonic:
Thanks for the PM. Check your's.

To those applying for UNC MSTP:

I got an email from them today offering an interview sometime in late jan/early feb. The email said they have 250-300 applicants, 30 interview slots, and 8 accept slots.

Anybody else interviewing there?

BAYLOR-
Are you seriously considering UNC? Over WASHU or Hopkins?

anybody got an interview offer from stanford mstp?

MAP,

You raise a good point, but I think I'm going anyway to see what the program is about. They're paying for it at least.

Hey Baylor, Have you graduated and are just chilling? If so then have fun and travel (as long as they are paying). I'm still in school and I have to work (teach) alot so I pulled my apps from most places. I'm also saving time and energy for 2nd look weekends. These will count alot since deciding between my 3 potential programs will probably be a real b!tch. Anyhow, Enjoy!

Hey original,

whats the 3rd school you are looking at? I know about WashU and Duke.

Perhaps I will meet you at the WashU revisit. Do you know when that is supposed to occur?

Baylor:

I'm looking at Harvard HST. My interviews there were so awesome that I'm going to be so daring as to say I think I'll get in. They questioned me on my research more so than at any of my MD/PhD interviews. I was also very impressed that they had thoroughly read my application. I left the place with a very good feeling. I'll go to WashU and Duke 2nd looks when most people are there. One of the main things I'll be doing will be checking out my classmates; so I think it's pointless going solo to a 2nd look. Hopefully we'll meet there. They haven't yet picked a date but Brian told me it'll be sometime in March.

Chef,

I have an invitation to Stanford's MSTP Interview. They offer three interview dates :

Jan 14
Jan 28
Feb 6

I'm sure they do a lot more, so sit tight. I'm sure you'll get offers. They're pretty slow and processing these offers.

Hey Sonic,

Congrats on the Stanford invite! Did they notify you by email or snail?

How long was it between the time your secondary was complete and the time you got the interview?

Mine's only been complete for a couple weeks and I'm wondering how long I need to wait before giving up hope 😉

Later,

Adam

Stanford notifies you by EMAIL
I had to wait for about 2 months (I submitted my secondary in early October) before I got an invite... relax fellas.

Hi all.. I'm new to these boards and I'm considering applying for the MSTP in some schools -- however I really don't have a clue what my chances are, what schools I should try to apply to, etc.. Here are my stats, and maybe you can help me out:

Ivy League school
Biomedical Engineering major
GPA ~ 3.6, hoping to get it up to 3.67 or thereabouts by the time I graduate.
MCAT: 40-42 (13-15V, 13P, 14B)
GRE: 1210 (660V, 780Q, 770A)
One abstract published (2nd author), full length paper forthcoming. One year of research experience, planning to do at least one more year of research before med school
Various extracurricular, leadership, volunteer type activities.
