i can sympathize with your situation as i had a difficult time writing my personal statement as an MSTP applicant 6 yrs ago. feel free to PM me your draft and i'll try to give you some constructive feedback.

i also suggest that you get feedback from other folks...for example like that other MSTP guy in your lab and some others in this forum.
