MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, that's funny. I have been checking my e-mail every 2-3 minutes and have gotten excited for just a moment every time I got a piece of junk mail.

I wasn't complete until the end of July (waiting for letters and such), so I probably won't hear anything today. MSU COM is also my first choice.

Good luck everyone!

apple 3,

Does you know why they keep they add the more competitive applications to their "pile" to be evaluated the following week? There must be some reason, however, I don't see it.

As far as I understand it, each week before the adcom meets, all the applications are run through an algorithm which ranks them, and then the top "X" number (I forget what X is) are given to the adcom to review and choose for that week.

So each week, many of the best applications are taken out of the competition (because they've been accepted), therefore other applications can move up in the rankings for the next review.

I have been complete for nearly a month and a half. MSUCOM is one of my top two choices... I've been neurotic all day today. I'm not expecting to hear back from them early (if at all, fingers crossed) because my stats are borderline (3.35 cpa, 28P, 500 hours community service). But you never know, so I'm keeping my hopes up! Good luck to everyone.

Ahhh I'm waiting (patiently?!) too!

Got my acceptance email from MSUCOM today!!! Class of 2015!!! Good luck everybody and I hope to meet some of you come next summer!🙂🙂🙂

What is your stats and residency if you don't mind? Congrats to you!!

Congrats! I guess they were telling the truth about 9/8. I wonder if that means the rest of us who haven't heard anything are not going to, at least for this week.

sacredlearner13,

When was your secondary application complete?

accepted yesterday!

is anyone else choosing to go on the campus visit before deciding? I am going on 9/24

Congrats on those who were accepted!! 😀 That's AWESOME! Hopefully I'll be joining you next year. Oh, and if you're visiting the campus make sure that (along with el oasis) you get some menna's joint. AMAAAAZING food, not if you're on a diet though 😛

Are you going to be visiting all 3 campuses or just EL?

I am just visiting east lansing...that is the only campus I am interested in.

congrats to everyone who got acceptances!

for the rest of us there's always next wednesday

Anybody know how many applications are reviewed by the Committee each week? It can't be that high of a number, can it?

Quick Question:

My secondary app was complete late August, but I retook the mcat on Aug 4th. I have just gotten my scores and sent them to AACOMAS. Does anyone know how long it takes for AACOMAS to get them, and then for them to send the new scores to MSU?

Thanks

Congrats to those who got accepted,,, Does anyone know how to pay the deposit online??

MSU also advises that you can fax them your new scores for fast processing.

Does anyone know how many days before the application review day (Wednesday's) does your application have to be complete in order to potentially be reviewed that day?

They might be busy now since they are looking through what they have already, last year it took them about two weeks to send me one around this time.

Thanks for the info. They finally sent it out yesterday.

I have the same question. I'm going to drive to the EL campus on monday to personally drop off my secondary but I'm wondering if my app will be reviewed the following wednesday?? Or does it depend on how competitive my app is?? 😕

It depends on how competitive your application is. Only the top 40 or 50 i have been told get reviewed each week. They rank applicants based on an algorithm that I have described in an earlier post. My question is how many days in advance does your application have to be marked as complete before it is officially entered into the ranking system?

also if you are marked complete on monday when you drop it off I would say you should be good to go and in the pool of applicants for the following wednesday.

I looove this school and I really want to go here 🙂 Hoping to hear from them soon!!
However, I don't like their admissions procedure and wish they gave interviews. Like baz2881 said, they use some formula to rank you. A lot of where you get ranked depends upon how many hours your have volunteered. So, if you have a TON of hours, and have a decent GPA/MCAT, you have a good chance of getting in. What about people who didn't know until a few years ago that they want to become doctors? They, like myself, might have accumulated less hours. When I applied the first time, my application actually never even got reviewed just because my volunteer hours were on the low end. That means they never even got to see all of the other cool things I have done that were listed in my personal statement 🙁
One big tip: If you are an in-state student, meet with an admissions counselor. I wish I had done this before I applied last year... they are soo helpful and let you know exactly what they are looking for.
Good luck everyone 🙂

I wish AACOMAS would work faster!!! My app. is verified but not yet released to the schools

I was accepted last week as well. I turned my app in on July 15th. I had 34Q MCAT and 3.97 GPA and Michigan Resident. Not much hospital time but a lot of other volunteer and EC activities... Congrats to everyone accepted, can't wait to be a spartan next year!

Are you applying to some MD schools? With that stats, you're pretty sure to get into some MD schools as well.

why would you want to apply to a MD school of you want to be a DO ... regardless of your stats??

Even though the more I read about DO, the more I want to be DO, but if one has the stats, one should keep their options open.... that's why maybe?

I started out my undergrad as pre-chiropractic, so orthopedics is my main interest and I think that the DO approach is a more fitting option for what I want to do. I've also shadowed many successful MSUCOM graduates with amazing people skills and they have given me an example of the kind of doctor that I want to be. Also, when I have visited MSUCOM I have really felt at home so for me it has been the only place that I really wanted to go.

Just got admission email today...yea...I got accepted. So exciting...I think my evaluator forms play a very important role in the admission decision because my stats is just border line and I'm OS.

By the way, do you think MSUCOM will give me some scholarship to lower the supper high OS tuition? I heard someone said even though the OS tuition is very high, the school will give out some scholarship to assist OS tuition.

Good luck to all of you are waiting for MSUCOM admission. I believe MSUCOM is one of the best medical school in the nation, not just for DO only.

Congrats on being accepted! MSUCOM is definitely an amazing school! If you guys don't mind, could you post your stats and when your secondary was complete? Mine was complete on August 12th and I haven't heard anything so I'm starting to get nervous!!!
