MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! I got the same feeling when I received the accepted email. I also plan to attend EL, but I would like to visit the campus first. Can you tell me something about EL campus? I'm OOS, and I hope they will give me the non-resident scholarship
PS: I absolutely agree with you that there is much more about the applicant than his stats.

My application has been complete since early August or late July (I believe). I'm at work now so I don't have the exact date in front of me.

So I spent a day at MSUCOM in the spring. I can tell you straight away, don't expect a shiny new building. Nothing about the building was very impressive. It's large but pretty old. HOWEVER there were many good things (and more important things, IMO) about this school. First off, everyone I met was really laid back. CCOM and MSUCOM were my two favorite schools for one of the same reasons: the students emphasized how supportive the academic atmosphere is.

MSUCOM students take classes with MSU-CHM students for the first year (or two?) but I was told that the DO students make it a point to share study guides, answers to review problems etc. Also, everyone I met was really excited and proud to be at MSUCOM. If you're interested in primary care, MSUCOM will be a great fit for you. Even if you're not, MSUCOM may still be a great fit for you! I hear a large portion go into ortho, but that could be heresay =D.

Take my feedback with a grain of salt. I spent only one day on campus! I bet current students will have more to say. Actually, I would love to hear pros and cons from current students.

Hey DOxidant, quick Q for you. Are the faculty equally good on all 3 campuses? we do have live lectures on each campus, or are they video conference of the EL lecture?
Thanks
Congratulation everyone who got accepted!! For those who are still waiting, I really hope that you all hear a good news soon.

I'm a first year student @ EL. If there is any question, feel free to PM me.

I'm really grateful that I'm here. I really love all the faculties I met. i'm really happy here. No matter what campus you go to, you will feel the same way. We are all part of MSUCOM anyway. Last weekend, a bunch of students from DMC and MUC came to EL and watched MSU kicking a**** of Norte Dame.

For those who are still watiing... I know the application process is tiring and draining your energy. Stay positive. You can get through this and YOU WILL 🙂

I am at the Macomb campus and can say that our faculty are absolutely amazing. They go out of their way for us on a daily basis, I truly believe they go above and beyond what is expected of them and care about us more than I could have ever expected. The live lectures are rotated between all of the sites, though the majority are typically from EL, but they are very interactive regardless of which site the lecture is originating from. There is always your course faculty for that subject in the room at your site and they facilitate questions to the lecturer or they will answer your questions if you'd prefer to ask them rather than the lecturer.

+1 to that. DMC's faculty is also absolutely amazing and very nice.

I'm visiting october 22... I can't make the october 8 visit day because my club team has ultimate frisbee regionals in Iowa. I still sort of feel like I can't believe I'm going to medical school next year. I'm looking forward to meeting potential classmates, hopefully more SDNers who will be accepted between now and then!

Can anyone tell me how much the secondary app fee is? Not sure if I should go ahead and also apply through AACOMAS, already applied to all TX schools though TMDSAS and to MI allo schools through AMCAS, wanted to also apply to MSUCOM but not sure if I will be able to afford it all for a slight chance of getting accepted from OOS

85 bones. Did you apply to MSUCHM as well?

I sent my primary to MSU CHM, but decided not to fill out the secondary since I have my heart set on MSU COM.

ya i applied to MSU CHM, UM, and Oakland, and all the TX schools
85s not that bad just feel like its late already

Yeah, it is kinda late for MSU COM. They are known to start their admission cycle very early and aggressively and tend to be pretty selective when it comes to out of state applicants. However, there are still many empty spots and it would not be impossible to get one, especially if you are a somewhat competitive applicant. If you are serious about osteopathic medicine, you should DEFINITELY apply if you have the chance. MSU COM is a great school.

Sorry thitchcock, I just assumed that you were out of state based upon the fact that you applied to all of the Texas schools. I guess that doesn't necessarily make you a Texan.

How many people who are OOS got accepted into MSUCOM so far? I am OOS and got accepted into MSUCOM in the second week they sent out acceptance. Quite surprise!

you have great chance in any do school. D.O schools only take your best scores. You are inn great shape.
all the best

It is not too late to apply. It's actually still somewhat "early" if you're just getting complete now.

I disagree. It is late in the cycle. MSU prefers that students apps are in by end August.... but is it worth applying this late in the cycle.... absolutely. what are you loosing by applying... a few dollars... what are you loosing by not applying... one year & a chance of getting into medical school!

I agree with 2015MD...while it is a little late in the cycle, I have a friend who applied to state last year just a few days before the deadline (I think it was in December), and still got a spot! But you have 0% chance of getting in if you don't apply at all...I wouldn't want to lose out on the opportunity

Is there anyone going to visit EL campus this Friday? I also will stop by DMC to check it out before going to EL campus.

Yes I'll be going Friday. But it seems the majority of people are going on the 22nd.

No email. This waiting business is making me way too anxious.

Hey Guys,
Just got the acceptance e-mail at MSU-COM! I can't even begin to express what I am feeling right now, so I am not going to try! But I wanted to know...anyone else accepted today?

Also - for those who already got their admissions packets - how long does it take between when you receive the admissions e-mail and when you get the admissions packet in the mail? I just want to make sure I'm home when they send it! Secondly - when do you decide what campus you are going to attend?

Congrats on your acceptance!! I got my admission packet 2 days after i got the admissions email. It depends on where you live. I live in the Detroit area so I got my acceptance Wednesday 9/22 and the packet on Friday 9/24. In the packet comes a form where you choose which campus you want to attend. Hope that helps. Congrats!!

Thanks Tarun. Yes I will be matriculating for the MSUCOM C/o 2015. It was my top choice of schools 😀 I have visited the DMC a couple months ago but will revisit it on 10/15. I am visiting East Lansing this Friday the 10/8. Its either DMC or EL for me but I will probably visit Macomb as well.

Hi there,

So I will meet you up in the meeting on this Friday. I will stay in Detroit on the night before. Do you have any recommend what places to go on that night?

Places to go? Hotels or Bars?

Got my acceptance e-mail today. OOS, 29/3.7. Anyone who thinks they are being passed over, just be patient. I was starting to get paranoid myself.

Even if it is true that the class fills up by the end of the year, there are still 10-12 Wednesdays for acceptances to be given out. Plus there is still all the spring acceptances and wait-lists and the such.

It's not late with ~9-10 more Wednesdays of acceptances going out in 2010 followed by more in 2011 plus the wait-list will move around March - it doesn't fill in December like some suggest on here. I would guess roughly half the class is filled so far.

The class doesn't fill as fast as some make it sound on here, it just happens to go faster than other schools. If you have competitive numbers/ECs you still have a great shot.

Just go the acceptance email this morning! Strange that it didn't come Wed tho. But here are my stats: 27Q; OOS; 6000 hr working; 2000 volunteer + EC; 3.7 gpa

Oh that sounds great. I think I'm pretty set on the EL campus - but I'll see after the visits to Macomb and Detroit! I guess I'll see you around next fall! Can't wait 🙂

Anyone visiting EL campus on November 12th?

I'll be flying out from San Diego that Thursday and staying till Sunday.

Any tips/advice on fun things to do in the area when I'm done checking out the school? Feel free to PM me.

Do we have the opportunity to purchase season tickets for football as grad students? If so how does that work and how are the seats!

GO STATE!!

Check out near the capital building in Lansing (capital of Michigan). There is a lot of cool stuff to see/do there. Take a drive or walk around campus (it's a huge campus). There's also a home basketball game the evening of the 12th. Don't be afraid to ask your student tour guides for things to do....

Yes. There is a group of COM students who have tickets and go to games/tailgaate together. The seats are near the student section AFAIK (I don't have tickets).

Has anyone had luck getting in touch with MSUCOM admissions advisors via phone or email?

I met with an advisor back in April, and she told me to keep in touch with her through the fall to make sure everything was going well. I sent an email a month ago and received a reply from someone else a day later. Then I sent another email 7 days ago and have yet to receive a reply.

I don't want to annoy them, but I think waiting 7+ days for an email response is being pretty patient. I think I will wait until after acceptances go out this Wednesday, and then try to get in touch via phone. Hopefully that works.

When was your Secondary application completed? I have similar numbers.

Hi all I just got my MCAT scores back and I want to know what I am looking at.
I really want to go to MSU-COM but i messed up the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT.
I got a 9 bio, 9 phys, and a 4 vr with a Q writing. I have also worked in EMS for 6 years 3 as an EMT and 3 as a Paramedic, I went down for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief and volunteered for habitat for humanity as well as a research project into climate change. I am wondering what kind of chances I have and if I should retake the MCAT

I have a 3.39 Science gpa with a 3.4 total gpa,

Any advice??

According to the CIB, the minimum sub score for verbal they take is a 4. Are you applying next cycle or have you already applied for this cycle? I say retake to raise your verbal score. Also, are you an IS or OOS applicant?
