MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

Hi all I just got my MCAT scores back and I want to know what I am looking at.
I really want to go to MSU-COM but i messed up the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT.
I got a 9 bio, 9 phys, and a 4 vr with a Q writing. I have also worked in EMS for 6 years 3 as an EMT and 3 as a Paramedic, I went down for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief and volunteered for habitat for humanity as well as a research project into climate change. I am wondering what kind of chances I have and if I should retake the MCAT

I have a 3.39 Science gpa with a 3.4 total gpa,

Any advice??

Hey medic 1984.I am a current MSUCOM student, and i will tell you dont listen to others saying you are below the MSUCOM admissions numbers. I have people in my class with 40 on the MCAT, while others with 20. not one person but more than one, and when MSUCOM averages everything it will come up to MCAT 27. i have at least 8 people in my class that i talk to, they all get accepeted in the last week of admissions and they all have much lower number s than yours.so you do have a chance

crossing my fingers for some good news tomorrow! good luck to everyone else!:luck:

Hi medic,

I also got 4 in VR, but the other two sections are 10 and 11. My sGPA is 3.86 and cGPA 3.71. I am OOS and English is not my native language, so I think they understand why I have such low score in VR but not the other 2. I got accepted in the 2nd week of cycle, which means i am kind of competitive. You have very good experience, but your GPA and other 2 sections may not compensate for your VR. If you got secondary apps, you will have higher chance to get in because you have very good clinical and volunteer exp to show them in 13 pages application. And yes, if you're in state, you will have much higher chance. It also depends on when you submit your application. Right now, it is kind of late to submit secondary since MSU wants to fill most of their class before Dec.

I hope you will get through the screening process and wish you best. If you think you can improve your VR, you definetely should retake it.

Take care

Hey medic, if I was in your situation, I would apply immediately if you haven't already and then retake the mcat early next year if I didn't get in or was wait-listed (assuming you think you can raise your VR score). Either way, persistence is definitely good and despite what everyone here believes your chances are, only the adcom matters! Good luck with whatever you decide!

+1 to that Medic. My advice on raising your VR score would be to read newspaper articles online everyday for at least an hour. Force yourself to read things that you aren't necessarily interested in. I'm confident that this will help you! GL with everything!

Accepted!!! thank God. I'm also a non trad, paramedic, 3 years experience.

Hey guys, I'm starting to get a little worried since I've been complete since Aug 24th and haven't heard anything other than my application is complete. I have a 3.63 cgpa, 3.55 sgpa, 24mcat and over 1000 hrs volunteering with good ECs/research and letters. I feel like I'm just on a long road to being denied since I'm probably not that competitive as an OOS applicant. Do you think it's really bad that I haven't heard back yet? Thanks for your replies.

I wouldn't get too worried yet, I'm in-state with a 3.7 sGPA, 28Q MCAT, 850+ volunteer hours, plus 3 years working in a hospital and I haven't heard back yet either.

We've got a few months before they aim to have their class full, so just think of each week as "weeding out" more people, putting us closer to the top!

Just was accepted today after turning in my secondary last week...

25Q
c3.76
s3.68

Was very surprised that after turning the secondary in so late in the process that I heard back from them so quickly but very excited to continue to stay in EL for another 4 years!!

For those who haven't heard back yet: Has anyone tried calling to check on their application? Do you think it's helpful at all or would give any insight as to where your application is in the pile? I know this is WAY TOO premature to be concerned but I received the complete email on 9/13 and MSU is my top choice and the waiting is driving me nuts.

...I need to calm down.

GreenMachine55,

Holy Crap! I can't believe that you heard back so quickly! Congratulations!

GoBlue212,

I had the same idea about calling the admissions office and inquiring about my application. I would do this, but I just don't want to annoy any people in the admissions office at this point in the game.

However, I am getting a bit worried. I have been complete since late July, with a 32/3.9 and approx. 500 volunteer hours, good reccomendation letters, and work experience. MSU COM is definetely my first choice. Has anyone else been complete this long and have not heard anything?

Hey dsmichigan, I haven't been complete quite as long as you (August 12th) but my stats are 31/3.8 with 14,000 work hours and 6,000 extracurricular/volunteer (I'm a little older than the average applicant). I assumed I would have heard something by now! I'm getting a little worried, but I don't really want to call and inquire. I just really hope I hear something soon...

IS, Complete since mid-july

With each passing week, I've increasingly started to want to drink every wednesday night

Anyone even earlier than that still waiting?

For OOS applicants out there, how long after them receiving everything for your file did you receive an interview invite?

This is a great school, my friends hubby just graduated from here. I've only heard great things. Def my top DO choice!

I called this past Wednesday to check up on my application. I have been complete since Sept 6th. I have been a nervous wreck since then....the lady in the admissions office was nice but she told me she could not tell me anything. She said they do not review apps based when they come in. She said you would know if you have been reviewed (they decide as soon as they review you...waitlist, accept or reject) I asked her if they review most of all the in state applicants that apply and she said no they do not review them all. I would just hate to not be reviewed at all!

Does anyone know where I could get MSUCOM apparel such as t-shirts and stuff. I looked at the MSUCOM store online but I have seen other shirts and apparel that I liked that are not on the store website.

The college store across the street from the med school, the med school book store in the basement of fee, or you have to go to the campus and purchase directly from the school. You won't be able to find anything online though. Except the hoodie w/ the small logo and some fleece jackets. Same applies for the College Store. http://www.msucomstore.com/servlet/StoreFront The person that has all the t-shirts is in the student org office, and the money collected will go to student orgs.

Did anyone else just get about seven copies of the same email about seeing the Southeast Michigan campuses on October 29?

Yeah, and the really hilarious thing is that I've been complete since August, IS, and haven't heard anything - so that chances of actually getting accepted at this stage are quickly being reduced to a very low order of probability.

So basically MSUCOM is just taunting me. 🙁

I thought the email was about whether or not I was accepted and got really excited haha

I got 3 copies of that email in a 2 minute span.

Same here... I have been complete for a while now, although I have not heard anything yet. Would attending this tour "boost my chances?"

Well at least it makes me feel better that everyone else got it too. That was suuuuuper frustrating though. Ugh.

Count me in as also someone who got a bagillion copies of the same e-mail. Definitely made my heart stop for a second until i knew what it was.

Wow I'm glad I'm not the only one in the same boat with the multiple campus visitation invites!!!

...Well I guess that's one way to get the heart pumping lol

Good luck to all MSU-COM Class of 2015 candidates tomorrow morning!! :luck:

hey all!

Its Wednesday! Do you know what time the emails typically get sent out for acceptances?!

Judging by previous posts in this thread - right about NOW. That is, if the adcom hasn't decided to take the week off.

So I submitted everything a couple weeks ago.. I have a 3.6 sGPA and 3.5 cGPA but my MCAT wasn't very high, I have been working in the hospital for 4 years as a nursing assistant in the ER, awesome letters of rec., and a good amount of volunteer hours. so I am really worried about not being able to get in. I am an in state student..

Has anyone heard anything? Is the adcom not meeting this week?

Hmmmm, I'm surprised that nobody has posted about acceptances today!

I'm visiting the Detroit and EL sites on Friday. I'll write a post about the visits afterward.

Accepted! So excited !!!!!:😀 OOS, 3.3 sciGPA 3.5 cGPA, 29Q MCAT.

Since I'm out of state, I know nothing about the E. Lansing/Detroit/Macomb sites. Can anyone give a brief description or pro's/cons of each? I'll be visiting but I'd like some honest opinions too 🙂

Hey everybody! I have been reading SDN for months, but this is my first post!

Im OOS (California Resident) MSUCOM is one of my favorite schools, and I have really strong ties to MSU and East Lansing (I included that in my extra info page in my application) I have only been complete since October 5th, but I havent heard anything from them yet and looking at other people, it seems like a lot of people are hearing really quickly. Am I freaking out for no reason? Have any other OOS with similar numbers heard back more quickly??

Thanks! 🙂

They do admissions on a rolling basis and read applications in order (as I'm sure you know). So, no worries. I put mine in Sept. 15th and didn't get accepted until today. So, you have time... I about gave up myself. Good Luck!!

Hows it going everyone... First time post, I just was excepted today. GO GREEN
