MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gives me hope! I just got my stuff sent out today!

I was worried all the canuck spots would be filled by the time they got to me.

I don't know ,why I have the feeling that it won't be rolling admissions for canadians this year , so much for applying early..😕

Even in state applicants. Many people including myself applied early and still havent got any word. 2 people got accepted within 18 days only from this forum. Its crazy and i do believe that there was no point in applying early this year. I had to call my evaluators daily to remind him that i only had a few days left. I wish i gave them more time by applying later and telling them that they had a time limit that i didnt even know of.

I can't believe that it's the THIRD week of admissions and they still haven't given any CDN spots... Are they waiting for the United States presidential election in November???

That's uncool to still advise us to apply early when it has absolutely no advantage... Could have polished my app more if I knew, not like that matters cause my chances are slim, but still!!!

🙁😕🙁

LOL my fellow vancouverite/Chinese comerade...take it easy, bro...They probably put our applications in a separte pile, which they haven't had a chance to review yet...I guess next week for sure, some love will be given to Canadians....N I don't think your chance is slim at all...I think MCAT+GPA =60% EC=40%, so you still have a good shot...Good luck!:xf:

Congratulations to all those who have already made it! 👍👍👍

There is no early application advantage. Each week they take the top ranked people in a category (MCAT, GPA, volunteer hours and letters I believe are the 4 categories). I wanna say top 50 but that number could be a rumor. The "advantage" of being early is that u have less people to be ranked against. However, if u never fall in the top spots, u just won't be pulled and u sit around all cycle.

Kinda stinks. I wish it were different 🙁 I think the first week this year, by looking at the posts, they did GPA, second week MCAT and this week I'm assuming volunteer hours (since shabnasty says they have more than average) but there weren't enough reported acceptances on here to tell.

Hopefully more of us get some love in the coming weeks 🙂 MSUCOM reviews weirdly, but hopefully it works out in some of our benefits! :xf:

I'm not sure how they looked in to the categories. I got accepted Sept 5th, the first week and my gpa is only 3.44 but I have a high MCAT and above average volunteer hours. I'm IS and was complete on 8/9.

Hmmm then I'm not sure! Maybe they pull from more than one category a day. I got my info from their office - maybe I didn't get all the details. Congrats on ur acceptance!

So what do you think Dr. Meows, sounds like they pulled from the volunteer hours pile yesterday?

So what do you think Dr. Meows, sounds like they pulled from the volunteer hours pile yesterday?

That's my guess because I'm clearly neurotic 🙄 but there's no way to really know. Cmualum said they had extensive ECs but didn't give an exact number of volunteer hours 🙁

I just hope I come up in one of these next few piles! I'd love to join you lucky ducks! 🙂

Congrats to everyone who got in so far!

On another note, not to be a negative Nancy here, but do they ever send out reject emails or can we wind up waiting endlessly in the cycle until its over?

I've had friends rejected mid-cycle. My guess is, if you're rejected mid-cycle, you were high enough on the list to have ur app pulled, but they ended up not liking you for some reason. If you're rejected at the end of the cycle, you probably never made it high enough on their list to be pulled. That last sentence is just me speculating though.

Congratulations to everyone whose gotten in!! I'm OOS and haven't heard anything yet and I'm considering OUWB since it's private and don't favor IS.

For all you applicants from Michigan, what do you guys think of Oakland University William Beaumont, the newest school in MI? If given accepted to both OUWB and MSU-COM, which would you guys choose and why?

Thank you all!

I did my undergrad at OU. They are a great school in a nice area. They just finished construction on a new building that will have some of the medical stuff in it. Beaumont is a really great hospital system around here as well. I met with one of the OUWB board members a few months back and was very impressed with the program. They are new but trying aggressively to establish themselves as a top MD school in the region.

To be honest. I think you're not going to get a lot of responses that can guide you one way or the other. The first major thing is you get accepted to both is - do you prefer to be a DO or MD? That in my eyes it he most important distinction. In addition, tuition - obviously Oakland is going to be cheaper for your since it's private versus MSUCOM which is OOS public. However, besides these two things, I think you would have to look at each of the campuses and see what you like best (both Oakland and MSUCOM (while I've only seen 2 out of the 3 possible campuses) are nice. Sorry if that doesn't help but I find those things to be the most important: degree you get and money. You'll get a fantastic education at either institution.

Michigan is becoming more and more stacked with great schools. I have friends that have attended both, I hear *better things about MSUCOM. I met with reps from both schools at a med-school fair on UofM's campus last spring, OUWB has a clear vision and I wouldnt worry about it being a newer school... Also it isnt the newest school anymore, CMU 2013

I think it's for the better. It's going to be more integrated. It doesn't seem like it is now but later on in the systems courses it definitely will be. I think the only advantage to it this semester is instead of having 1-2 exams every week we only have 6 exams all semester.

Been lurking a few days. Got accepted at msucom Wednesday and wanted to see how everyone else is doing. Well my stats are 32 mcat 11ps 10vr 11bs. I have a 3.7 non sci and 3.5 sci major chemistry at msu. All the working ec and volunteering ****. Now on third research project. I had completed my application I believe like September 3rd or so. So it only took less than 2 weeks. I am excited about msucom they are very friendly and I hope they are like my community college I had attended my first two years in terms of help. I am relieved that I have a guaranteed spot for Med school and am looking forward to how the rest of the season shapes up. Good luck everybody and if I could give out any advice is that you should place incredible importance on the mcat. I had probably can say that I had logged 200+ hours of study hell I even drove 5 hours away to take the test. Don't let those dreams slip because you think you are OK. Know you are.

just fyi, MSUCOM changed their curriculum this past year..... some say that change is a bad thing, only time will tell.

I don't think its bad, but some things will probably change next year. The good thing about MSUCOM is that they give students an opportunity to voice their opinion. Our class had a focus group discussion after anatomy and during biochem. Its tough studying for 3-5 subjects for one exam, but then you are done for 2-3 weeks.

I like the idea of exams in this format, having exams every few days is stressful, and its easy to neglect other subjects while cramming

Just asking for a friend. Their AACOMAS should be verified this week and they hope to have MSU's secondary in by mid-October (because it took a week and a half for MSU to send me one)

1. How long does it usually take after you send in the secondary (sending it Next Day Mail) to be marked as complete?

2. Is being complete in mid-October killer? Stat: 3.8 cGPA/sGPA 29K 10/10/9 Average EC's. Instate

I know they're a really aggressive rolling admissions school so just wondering.

Is there lag time between them receiving it and marking it complete? It's really worrying :/ I was suggesting my friend get everything done now and soon as secondaires come in to send it next day

does anyone know how many deferred acceptances they allow to enrol in 2013, and how many high wait listed from last year will be enrolling in 2013?

typically 2 to 3 days after they receive it. the mail all goes through a central processing center which also takes about a day for them to forward it to COM.

Does anyone know if MSUCOM follows the same academic calendar as MSU's regular calendar? I was wondering if there would be a free weekend in between finals for the summer term and beginning of the fall term.

I'm trying to set a wedding date...which is proving to be VERY difficult with the uncertainty of which school I will get into! (HOPEFULLY MSUCOM!) I would hope to do it before we begin, but if I can't, then hopefully right after summer term ends.....

Good luck! I was in your shoes not too long ago. I just set a wedding date. Had to do it over labor day weekend because I wasn't sure. I haven't seen next years schedule but based on last years, it looks like there is a week off in between summer and fall, but maybe a current student can confirm that.
