MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think after first year we get three weeks off in May and three weeks off in August. That's what I'm gathering from my future calender. Hard to tell though since class schedules aren't finalized that far in the future yet.

Wait, so after first year you have some time off in May and time off in August, but have class in June and July? Am I reading this wrong or is that right lol

I wonder about this too. Seems like an unconventional class schedule.

Yes we have a summer semester during that time.

Interesting. I knew the first year started earlier than other schools, but I didn't know you had a summer semester your 2nd year. Do you know if you guys get extra time off before having to take off your step 1 boards? Or is the lack of time off never compensated?

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone here has applied to MSU's DO/PhD program or if there are any current students in the program who wouldn't mind sharing their experience?

I am thinking of applying to the DO/PhD program, and the DO program for sure(AACOMAS app verified, getting ready to submit secondaries). My stats: 3.51 gGPA, 3.68 sGPA, 27R MCAT, 14 months research experience, as well as volunteering and doctor shadowing.

Thank you all!

The change in curriculum gives us more time off before studying for the boards. I don't remember how much more time. It's either one or two months.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing! 👍 🙂

Hi everyone,

I just need a bit of advice here regarding the evaluation forms for secondary. One of my evaluators is out of the country and will not be back until Oct 5th. Although I recieved the seconday on Sep 26th, I want to send it back asap. I do have another option of choosing my employer from a tutoring organization. She will do a very good job at it, but the problem is she has only known me for 7 months vs the other evaluator who has known me for about 3 years. My question is whether I should go ahead with my employer or wait for the other evaluator to come back?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!
P.S. I plan to send everything in via express mail since I have heard the class for Canadians was full last year in October.

Ultimately it is who knows you best. The most important thing about the evaluation is that the person knows your character and devotion to osteopathy. If either person can write adequately on those topics, go with the person who can get the letter in earlier. If the person out of the country knows you better and understands your dedication to osteopathy, waiting will not kill you if you receive an awesome letter in compensation.

I appreciate your help. However my primary concern was that the evaluation asks for how long have you known the applicant for? I would probably recieve good evaluation from either one of them, but I was just a little scared as to the short duration that the employer knows me for. I just don't want that mentioning of 7 months affect my application, despite having a good evaluation from her.

imho 7 months is plenty of time to get to know somebody for a medical school evaluation in the capacity of an employer

I had the head of my volunteer department as one of my evaluators and only knew her for 6 ish months and gained acceptance. Just make sure they can evaluate your character and commitment to osteopathic medicine and you should be good. 🙂

Same mcat! And similar gpa. I recieved a secondary 10 days after they released my app. Youll get one for sure, just be patient. In the meantime get to writing the essay, its somewhere in this thread, and filling out the non academic worksheet, its on their website, so u have a quick turnaround once the secondary comes. Goodluck!

A couple of forms to fill out (Osteopathic survey, discipline form, and one other that I can't remember) but nowhere near as time consuming as the worksheet.

Has anyone set up a date to visit the campus?

They have an open house for DMC and Macomb campuses (not sure about EL) on October 26th I believe. Think I'll be there

Who all is attending the E.L. open house on the 26th??

Was there a link in the email that allowed you to book an appointment/interview?

I read the email about visiting the campus (E.L) and couldn't find any info.

Thank you everyone an please do not give up. PM me if you have any questions. Good luck

Has anyone who has been accepted received their official acceptance packet in the mail yet? I'm not sure if they send them out immediately after you email them your mailing address or not, but I still haven't received mine and I'm so anxious!

COM has the longest pre-clinical years, far more than any other school. You get a one month between 1st and 2nd year. You also start 1st year earlier.

I hope they're giving more time between 2nd and boards because we didn't have enough. I had to study every damn day we had off to ensure a solid score.

Hey guys,

I was wondering how late it is getting at this point in the cycle for MSU? I ask because my second letter writer (my pre-med adviser) thought that it would be better for me to at least shadow a DO once before she writes the letter. She feels that waiting a few weeks would be worth it if she can mention that my knowledge of the DO profession is backed up by shadowing. However, I know that MSUCOM only accepts students until about December so I did not want to risk being too late.

So basically my question is this: Is waiting 2 more weeks for submitting all of my materials worth it if I can add DO shadowing (even if it may be just once or twice?) This would make me complete around late October which is very close to December. Just how important is it for MSUCOM that you shadow a DO? I have seen many people on this thread saying they were accepted w/o DO shadowing so it made me wonder.

-I have a 3.62 cGPA and 3.48 sGPA with a 34 MCAT (14p 9v 11b).
-I have done a post-bacc with 20 credits of 4.0.
-I have about 400 hours of volunteering
-I have over 2000 hours of clinical experience (where I scribed for a physician, trained as EMT, volunteered at the hospital).
-Various other ECs like president of club for years, sports, etc.

Thanks in advance guys!

They really stress turning in all the materials sooner than later on their website so I would think that with all your other credentials it would be best to submit now and you can always let them know about the shadowing later.

Accepted to MSUCOM Class of 2017!

Does anyone know when we are able to select which campus we will be at?

Being someone who has gone through your pre-clinical years there already, do you think having less time off/more time in the classroom compared to other schools was beneficial? Do u think its more information than other schools or the information is just more spread out? (Idk if u can actually answer that last question since u don't go to other schools lol, but asking just in case!). Do u think the way those 2 years are set up is an effective set-up for the students to prepare effectively? Thanks for your insight 🙂

Thanks for the input.

Do they accept update letters? Is DO shadowing that important for MSUCOM?

I would also appreciate it if anyone else could contribute!

Alright! See you there! Have you received your admissions packet in the mail?
No, not yet. I was actually wondering how long it normally takes to receive it? Those who got theirs already, how long did it take after you were accepted?

How do you plan to finance your education?

Someone should start an osteopathic class thread for this year. Im way too lazy and i dont know how to make one. I only use the mobile app!!

I believe part of the new curriculum gives you more time to study for boards at the end of 2nd year.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using SDN Mobile

Thank u 🙂 sounds like a beneficial curriculum change 👍
