MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hope you all don't mind if I jump in on the thread a little late. Just got word my secondary was completed today.

Congrats to all who where accepted and good luck to those still waiting.

Hi! I was complete today as well. How long has it been taking for people to hear back from admissions? Thanks! 🙂

I was complete beginning of September and I'm still waiting to hear back.

They review differently than most schools. I've been complete since the end of July and sent in three updates since then and am still waiting. 👎

I got a secondary invite last week. Is it even worth it this late in the game?

If you have good stats: yes. The way they review, they look at people with better stats who were complete later before people with subpar stats who were complete earlier. If your stats aren't so great it will probably be a waste of time, unfortunately.

Oh, I didn't know about that but thank you for the info! What do they consider good stats? I know this is a tough question, but does anyone have a rough estimate (months?) of how long it'll take them to get back to me? I'm IS, 30 MCAT, cGPA is 3.72 and sGPA is 3.62 and graduated from the University of Michigan if that helps at all. Thanks! 🙂

Apply. Those are good stats for MSUCOM especially since you are in state. They really like a lot of volunteer hours too so if you have a substantial amount (800 or so) that should help. They rank your app on MCAT gpa volunteer hours and letters I believe. If you "rank" above a person who turned theirs in ahead of you, you will be looked at first. Good luck! (And go blue! 😉 )

Was anyone brave enough to ask if they are meeting tomorrow? I highly doubt they are meeting but it would be nice to know for sure.

For those of you that are accepted, do you guys know if I have to give them a response to the acceptance e-mail or anything like that? Or do they only care about the paper work/deposit which is due by December 3rd? I haven't responded to the offer e-mail (came 10/31) and I wasn't sure if this was required.

I'm prtty sure you need to respond to the acceptance email because they send you official notification with paperwork you need to fill out.

HI guys for anyone who wants to know. For Canadians, there is no high or low waitlist this year. I just got an email from COM admissions. So if you are a Canadian waitlisted, you will be accepted off the waitlist depending upon completion date. I don't know this applys to americans as well but it was a generic statement saying no high or low waitlist this year!

I'm a Canadian who has not heard back at all. Any idea when I might here? I was complete a few months ago already.

I freaking HOPE that applies to Americans as well...

Will I guess I cant really complain then since I was complete in November.... ughh the wait sucks...

I'm almost guessing they didn't. I could be wrong but I think there are a lot of ppl that have gotten accepted that have till the beginning of December to commit. So they could be waiting to see how many spots there are after this. I could be blowing smoke in order to keep my hopes up 🙂

hi guys! they scheduled an interview for my DO-PhD application for today but nobody called me 🙁 has this happened any of you? :/

Hi, you are suppose to call the school and tell them you have an interview and they direct you to who you need to speak to😳 ... i wud call and explain the situation

really? it's really embarrassing 🙁 I thought they'll call me, thanks!

Any accepted Canadians planning on declining their offer by tomorrow? No movement yet on the waitlist 😳 lol. Was hoping someone would make room haaha...that sucks that they aren't doing high-waitlist this year😡

It does. I asked admissions staff.

No high or low waitlist starting this year.

That's weird, I wonder why they told us back in October that their was a high and low. I guess they decided after the campus tour.😕

Wait isn't this a bad thing? I mean a high waitlist was a guaranteed acceptance for next year. That sucks that they're taking it away.

I guess this is kinda selfish, but I think it's better for those of us already on the wait list that there's only one.

Is it no high or low waitlist in general?? Or just for Canadians...

Idk if I like that! They will be pulling off by stats anyways (right?) so I'd rather know if i were high or low right off the bat so i know whether or not i should get my hopes up lol.

Says the person who hasn't heard anything in 4 months 😳

I guess in my opinion the pt of deviating between high and low was to separate people who would be accepted normally versus fillers. I agree with you in the sense that I wonder if it'll still be based on stats and that either way the people who would typically be highwaitlisted would be the ones getting accepted and people who would have normally been low waitlisted would almost find it impossible to get off the waitlist, because highwaitlisted people wouldn't have the luxury to defer anymore. I feel like this move is in response to high application numbers this season and that its going to be a bad thing for the vast majority of people but my heart wants to believe that they are being kind and taking people off of the waitlist by completion date:xf: and that anyone on it is fully deserving. Someone who hasn't bombarded them already with emails want to message and ask if they are still pulling off waitlist by stats? or completion date

I have a phone appointment with an adviser in a half hour. Don't worry, I've got this covered and then some

Ok, all in all, there is officially only one wait list for each Canadian and American applicants (no high/low list for anyone). People are taken off the wait list not based on when they got their application in (chronological) but by the score their application received upon review. She also said that a lot of people have yet to be reviewed. Right now they're obviously waiting for the 300 people they chose to accept or decline their offers of admission. Common sense there: the more people defer/decline, the more the wait list moves.

Does that mean they already accepted the max? Anyone else will get wait listed?

so canadians have their own waitlist as do americans? And does that mean your rank drops once other students get waitlisted. Thats actually worse than the high/low waitlist. Now deserving people don't even get the option of enrolling next year, meaning that even less lower ranked people will come off. Yikess...the thing is the due date for accepted people to accept was dec 1 st so i hope waitlisters and completed applicants here some good news this week

Praying for all of you with myself include :xf::luck:

Yep. She said as of now, their acceptances were full (the website does say they try to fill the class BY December). I'm not sure if everyone else gets wait-listed... I think sometimes they do send that fateful email in April saying that a file was never reviewed. At least that's what someone else in the forum was saying happened to them last yr

ACCEPTANCES don't mean seats though. The 300 people have to accept first, and whenever someone declines or defers, the wait list gets moving...

That is a huge bummer, I have been waiting to hear from MSU since my July MCAT score posted in August and now best case scenario will be wait list. 🙁

Assuming they ever get to my file. 🙁

Yeah, Canadians should have their own waitlist since 20 spots are automatically reserved specifically for them. I'm not really sure how the whole ranking thing goes... She just said you're assigned a score and the highest scores get yanked as spots become open

Anyone know how many non-Canadian OOS seats are usually given out?

Don't take my word for the final say though! Don't give up!! I don't know exactly what date in December they stop sending acceptances, this was just what was relayed to me over the phone. She said: "at this pt, the acceptances have been sent out". I took that to mean, best case scenario was wait list, and then acceptance in the next coming months. And it all depends on your score. I really hope you get good news. This stuff is so heartbreaking.

I know, it's good to have a realistic idea of what to expect. Now if I get a wait list I can take that as a good sign hoping I end up near the top of the list.

That was me 👎 (Granted I wasn't complete until this time last year). I'm going to be very disappointed if that ends up happening to me again :bang:

I've been following this thread since a couple months ago, and I forgot I had an account here, so I decided to come out. I'm getting nervous.I was hoping that the class wouldn't be full yet, and I hope that the wait list moves very quickly. I'm an underdog, so I'm even more nervous. I have waay above ECs, and from what I am positive about are some very good letters of evaluation.

I currently attend MSU and hope to continue to attend here. I made sure that I hand delivered all my documents, and hope that I get accepted.
