So.... I was basically set on KCUMB until I found out I received the OOS scholarship from MSU. Now I am not quite sure. As I am from Ohio, MSU would be so much closer. However, I liked the feel of KCUMB more, if that makes sense. Anyways, does anyone have any opinions either way based on information I haven't said above? Thanks so much for your help!!!

How much is the OOS scholarship? Does it only cover the extra OOS cost or full tuition?

Important question though from other MSU threads, the OOS scholarship just brings the cost of tuition to IS.

Go to whichever is cheaper. MSU/Michigan has a lot of competitive residency programs that "like to take their own" (information from other threads), but KCUMB is an excellent school as well.

See everyone here is looking at this the wrong way:

ask yourself this question:

Do I want winters with medium level snow, or Do I want winters with high level snow?

jk, thats a tough one! gl.

Lol! Well, I am from Ohio, so any snow level sans Alaska is a good snow level

If you're getting close to IS tuition at MSU, you should absolutely go there.

Both are amazing schools. I would probably go wherever I like the location best. (or the cheapest)

I just chose MSU over CCOM. It was a tough choice, especially because I have gone to school near Chicago and worked downtown for the past 3 years. Originally I was positive that I would go to CCOM if I was accepted there, but location (near my family, EL is a pretty cool place) and tuition (cheaper than CCOM by 16k/year) finally swayed me. I really feel like MSU will be a great fit for me. If you have any questions PM me and good luck!!

Overall I would say that MSU is a more well put-together school and has really great rotation sites. That being said, KCUMB rotates through some of thesame Michigan sites as well and has a lottery system (you get a say in where you go) but I've heard (only second-hand so I don't know this is true and I would research it first) that MSU assigns which site you go to. Anyway, KCUMB also rotates through some of OU's Ohio sites (like Doctors in Columbus, among a few others I believe). If you're wanting to end back up in Ohio, that's something to consider, but since it's lottery there's obviously no guarantee. All things being equal I'd take MSU, but I have nothing substantial to base that off of except that I was accepted to KCUMB (which I thought would have been a good school).

Both schools are equivalent in term of preparing you to become a good physician. Now, it depends on what specialty you want. MSU is well known for family practice, and if that's what you want, you should go there. Otherwise, go where you "feel like more". If you like it more, you will be more successful. Don't go to MSU just because you have OOS scholarship. Your mind is somehow set at KCUMB and I believe there are some good reasons you decided so.

Good luck. BTW, if you're going to deny the OOS scholarship, make sure you let them know ASAP so they can notice other applicants who are waiting for your scholarship before the deposit deadline.

I have heard that both are good programs, but of the two, I only applied to KCUMB. I felt like I didn't want to attend a school that accepts applicants "site unseen." That could make for some very odd classmates, etc.. Not to mention, this detracts from one of the elements I find appealing about the medical school admissions process, the ability to present and sell yourself to the admissions committee.

Beyond that, I have no other reasons why I didn't like MSU, I haven't heard enough about it as a school either way. I have, however, decided to attend KCUMB over most of the other schools, because it is a strong program, has good rotation sites, a great curriculum, good faculty, and lots of early and frequent clinical exposure. Not to mention, they match a fairly large number of highly desirable specialties (at least for me).

MSUCOM's In-state tuition is $28,462.00
KCUMB's tuition is $39,436.00

Which city is a cheaper place Cost of Living wise? East Lansing, MI or Kansas City? Which is a nicer place to live.

Just trying to help the OP consider practical issues, although, in the end, I agree that the $11,000 tuition difference isn't worth it if you will be miserable at MSU.

I suggest you read up on each school's threads/websites/info individually, recall your interview day experience, and of course consider cost (not just tuition but also cost of living) - then decide where you feel most comfortable. I've grown to dislike these types of threads because everyone just comes in supporting their own school without much knowledge of the other one in consideration (me included, I didn't even apply to MSU because of the crazy secondary, so I won't try to sway you toward KCUMB). Don't let any one person convince you of a school, make your own decision. G'luck.

...me included, I didn't even apply to MSU because of the crazy secondary...

 Same here. What the heck was up with that? How is my pre-medical advisor going to attest to my ability toward becoming an osteopathic physician and fill out an entire page about it? I've been to his office like, two times in the four years I've gone here. Or one of my letter writers who is an MD? Stupid secondary...

Now, it depends on what specialty you want. MSU is well known for family practice, and if that's what you want, you should go there.

Not sound advice, especially considering MSU runs/is affiliated with more specialty residencies than any other school to my knowledge, but that itself is also irrelevant. If it were between KCUMB and Women's Medical College of Liberia then you may have a point.

$11,000 may not be worth it, but $44,000 after 4 years (with interest building) may be worth it.

Unfortunately, I'm OOS. Although I did get the OOS scholarship, its only for $25000 for three years (and I use "only" liberally, as $75000 is quite a lot). Therefore, It only takes the tuition (using next year's estimate of 73K) to ~$48000/yr for three years. Therefore, MSU is more expensive... sad but true.

Hmmm, well, unless you were gung-ho for MSU, I guess I'm missing why the scholarship has caused you to have a change of heart.

Because MSU went from ridiculously, super-dooper too expensive to just ridiculously too expensive.

But you're right. I think KCUMB it is! Thanks so much everyone for your helpful input!

How did you receive the OOS Scholarship? Did you apply for it? If so when is the deadline?

I did end up receiving an OOS scholarship, but it wasn't enough to definitively choose MSU. So, I went KCUMB.

They awarded eight scholarships this year. They get re-awarded as people (like me) decide to decline to accept them. So... If you are waiting for one, you may still have a chance. I got mine in late Nov.

I don't know what cost of attendance at KCUMB is but the 75k scholarship ends up putting you close (could actually be less) to the same amount of debt that an IS student at MSU graduates with. It's actually a pretty sweet deal for OOS students.

Average IS debt including undergrad: 182k
Average OOS debt including undergrad: 248k

Those figures include the the scholarships they gave out to half of their OOS students. 16 OOS students, 8 got the scholarship, makes one wonder how far over the 300k line the other 8 OOS students were in debt.

oh. I did not know that. Though I would expect the half who did get the scholarship to still come out around 180k and the other half to come out around 325k unless my brain is too tired to do math 😵
