MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LOL I know some of the people in that video.

Go study you med students instead of being ghetto fabulous...

I think you are fine! That is about the average isn't it and your instate. What's your gpa?

desi, I definitely think you have a chance! I had a 26 on my retake (I actually lost two points trying way harder), so I think they are pretty forgiving. Also, I've gotten an MD interview in the past few days, so i think anything is possible for us lower-staters. Keep your chin up!

Not so hot,

overall : 3.35
science: 3.2

If I don't get in this year, look for me at your local Wal-Mart. I will be the guy greeting you as you walk in.

I think you are fine also. But if not, I'll join you at Wal-Mart. It's my backup plan.

Thanks guys for your support, I'm just heading out to fax my score over to MSUCOM, so hopefully I shall get the nod soon.

Hey speete I think this week is your week, I believe your email is on the way.

As for the Wal-mart situation, the last one to the #5 register gets bathroom cleaning duty... (As he jolts toward the cash register)

Desi,
Have you checked with MSUCOM to make sure you are officially complete? If the adcom meets on Tuesdays, you will want to be complete by tomorrow for sure. Every extra week helps.

edit: we posted at the same time 🙂

I think so, the website says Yes to the rest of my materials/forms, besides my MCAT score which I'm faxing over today. I going to call them right after to make sure they look at their fax machine, lol. Thanks for heads up though.

The good thing about doing crappy on the MCAT is that you can always take it again. It sucks, but it is a problem that can be easily corrected.

I have a very good MCAT score, and I'm struggling because my GPA is brutal. It took me 7 crappy years to get a kinesiology degree and a 2.2, and I've been digging my way out of that hole ever since.

The only difference is, I'm more likely than you to get some looks from allopathic schools before they reject me. But I'd trade a ball for 0.3 GPA points without thinking twice. It would take me a couple years to earn those points, but a bad MCAT can be made up for with just a few months of studying and a few hours in the testing center.

How many applications do you guys think they have received? Are they going to look at them (if deemed acceptable) as they get them or do you guys think there is a large pile?

I think they have a big pile. Look at the acceptances already on SDN. I would assume that is only 10% of the seats already offered. That's why I'm nervous about getting in soon.

I agree. I am already at a disadvantage for being OOS.

It would be interesting to know how they handle oos apps. I wonder if you are in the same pile or if they wait until they've accepted a certain # of ISers.

So if MSUCOM meets every Tuesday, if a decision is made on your application do you get notified on that same day? What time does the committee usually meet?

For the past two weeks, people have been notified on Wednesday mornings, via email.

I think they review the application a couple weeks after you are complete. I'm guessing the turn around time to be about 2-3 weeks, unless you have stellar stats (ex: 3.6+, 30+ MCAT) so then you have chance to be reviewed in a week or two. I talked to the associate dean and he said my application should be reviewed sometime in the month (don't know if he meant September or October). I'm guessing I should know by early October.

You know what ticks me off, I hear people being accepted to MSUCOM that have ABSOLUTELY NO desire to go there. They have absolutely no knowledge of osteopathic medicine, no DO shadowing, no commitment to the DO profession. Those people just apply to it as an assurance school (and because its instate) but hold onto the seat till the end then release it. Which screws over the people that really would like to attend. Which really makes me wonder if they even look at osteopathic commitment during the admissions review or just the numbers. But I guess that is what the deposit is for, to weed out people that do this.

This is an actual story of someone I met that goes to MSUCOM right now, He told me he applied in early November to MSUCOM after he found out he won't get into Wayne State or other MD schools. And he got accepted right off the bat (he said he had a 3.5 gpa, 30 MCAT). His exact words were "I didn't even know what a DO was till someone told me to apply here" I told him what class do you have next today, he goes "UHH OMM, I will find out today what we do in this class" I felt like knocking him out. Seriously why accept people like this???

UGHHH sorry people, just had to rant a little bit.

They must leave some spots open late into the application season if that's the case. It seems like it's filling up so fast that it will be full in 4 weeks. I'm just paranoid.

I feel your pain... 2.2 is a nasty thing to over come
HOWEVER.... I have "heard" there is a way to delete your entire accademic record and start over (basically restart a bachelors degree).... when I was a pre-dental, some folks talked about that, about how a person can have a special circumstance and have thier entire accademic record "deleted" and basically start over..... You might want to look into that, you might be able to delete those 7 years and just start out freash

Wow desi, that guy kinda sounds like an a$$. Why would you ever go to a school you didnt care about, or werent proud of?? I was so pumped when I got the acceptance, I actually got up and left my class crying so I could call my mom (gotta love email updates on the cellie). I hope those of you that are dedicated get the nod soon so you can have some relief...I'm lookin forward to buying you guys a round at Ricks 😉

O yea I have heard of this, I think first you have to pull out your death certificate. Then you pay some guy in the back alley to get you a new SSN, passport and the whole sha bang. Yep record wiped CLEANNN!!!!

I would just like to give a shout out to my team, the DETROIT LIONS, 2-0 BABY!!!! Eat that Joey Suckington...

Texas has Academic Fresh Start, where you can exclude coursework taken 10 or more years ago from your GPA for admissions purposes.

I used to play pickup basketball with Shaun Rogers. At first, I had no idea who he was, and I thought he was just a big fatass. Then he started doing windmill dunks on everyone. Roy Williams is one of my all-time UT favorites as well, and Cory Redding is a great dude. I knew his dad a little bit, and my roommate, who was a student athletic trainer for football, knows him really well. I'm glad to see him making bank.

2-0 sure...but did you watch the game sunday? Neither team wanted to win. They both tried desperately to lose it in any way possible. Then finally the Vikings were successful in losing.

SPEETER = DREW SHARP.... Lions HATEERRR!!! LOL JP

Seriously I hate Drew Sharp along with the rest of Detroit, the guy needs to say something positive, ONLY ONCE, he is such a pessimistic ass****.

Come on man you had to feel a little pride after the game, the way Kitna played, he risked his life basically to win the game. Past Lion teams would have folded due to their blunders but this years one atleast fights till the end. I agree that the Lions did get lucky when Longwell hit the left upright, but playoff teams need luck to get in. Just remember the giants from last year, they were horrible but still got into the playoffs with luck. Come on man Lion's have been horrible for the past 7-8 years, just have a little bit of optimism. 😎😎

On another note, the update site still says no MCAT score for me, blah!!! the admissions lady told me she got it yesterday when I faxed it to her.

Speeter it only seems like the spots are filling up, but dude there are like 205 seats and I'm guessing so far maximum they gave out about 30-35. MSUCOM likes to have most of their class full before christmas, but still think how much movement there is from people not paying their deposit, people dropping their seat, wait list movement that goes on till June I hear.

It seems like MSU-COM is where many MD kids apply as their safety. Once they get into a MD program, they turn down MSU and open a lot of spots.

It's for the next cycle, 08-09. I don't care I want to get in now...lol

Edit: Does AACOMAS automatically send out my MCAT score to the designated schools, or do I have to call or email them to send the score out?

They sent mine out automatically, but they had it before I made my designations. I would think they will take care of it.

If you have an above average GPA and MCAT in both you should be fine. If you want to check out mine or speeter's stats just click on our MDapps profile. You need to realize in the pre-osteo forum we try to help each other by sharing our stats (but if you don't want to thats completely fine) unlike the pre-allo where its all cut throat. lol

BTW don't you guys think I have a real great smile in my avatar...hehehehe My mom says I got my smile from my great uncle, Harryass.

Like Desi said, check out my MDapps profile. And like Desi said, we will only give constructive comments about your stats. But nonetheless if you want to keep them private that is perfectly understandable. Good luck!

edit: Well tomorrow is the big day. If I don't find out what MSUCOM has decided about my application, I'm gonna need pills.

Would you like the blue pill or the red pill? 😀

Relax man you will find out soon enough, don't be getting so over stressed. Thats my job, lol.

I just wanted to throw this out there so people don't freak out on Wednesday mornings:

When I met with the admissions person at MSU she told me that it is normal if I don't hear from them for a couple of months after my file is complete. There is another post that details exactly what she told me, but the jist is that they only take 20% of each week's applications to committee....and if you don't make committee that week you stay in the pool and could make it the next week or you might make it in a month or two.

They will also let you know right away if you are not in.....

So moral of story, if you don't hear anything that is still good news!

Do you know if they are looking at only people you had their application complete in August. Or as more applications come in they add them to the pile. I know people who became complete in the end of August and got emails last week, and some you became complete beginning of August that still haven't gotten emails.

My application was complete this past Monday, so I was thinking I won't be looked at least for a couple more weeks.

when i meet with an advisor at msucom, she said that theres a list and the better u look on the app. the higher up the list u are. so if better people keep applying u get bumped to the bottem of the list. but i know so many people who have not sent in primaries so i thnk all of us are str8 we sent our stuff in early

any emails today?

Hey Everybody!! Did anyone else get the acceptance email from MSU-COM today??? What was funny was that I never even interviewed at the place! The email said "The completeness of your application materials and the quality of your achievements convinced the Admissions Committee that an interview would be superfluous." DAMN! I love MSU! Go Spartans! 😀

MSU normally doesn't interview and you are the first OOS! Good Job! Is MSU your top choice?

Interview invite, today!
they want me to call tomorrow to schedule one.
I'm out of stater. That must be why they wanna see me first...also, used the 2nd option for recommendations.
Anyhow, I'm excited to check out the school.
🙂

Hatman mind sharing with us when you were complete, and your stats.

congratulations, your going to be a Doctor 😉

Your pretty much in! Congrats.

Congratulations Jae, mind sharing with us when you were complete at MSU.

I guess as more and more people apply shouldn't the committee be looking at more applications and be a advantage for us. Since 20% (I heard 25%??) of a bigger number means more apps going to the committee for review.

Thanks! I was complete on August 1st and my stats are 25S Mcat (after 3 whole attempts!) and a 3.64 cum GPA (3.56 Science)....and I am an OOS!....Hang in there guys! There is always a chance! 😀

Nice stats, and thank you for sharing with us your stats. You should add yourself to the official acceptance thread if you already had not done it yet.

JPC, looks like your next buddy, they are accepting OOStaters now.. 😀

EDIT: Hatman I added you to the official acceptance thread, I hope you don't mind.

I hope you get in too! I won't go unless you are there! I will turn it down on the spot.
