MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey does the deadline date also include turning in the evaluation forms. Or does it mean the secondary app. I am just waiting for the evaluation forms to be submitted and my deadline date is approaching. does anyone know

I emailed them with this exact question and they confirmed that evals needed to be in by the deadline as well. They are really generous with extension requests though.

They would like them to be in by the deadline, but it shouldn't matter if they are couple days late.

I emailed to let them know one of my evaluations might be a few days late, just as a courtesy...they gave me an extra month extension (even though I technically didnt ask for one), and they were all there and my file was complete the day after my completion deadline. They are super cool in the admissions office over there!

So they are not just cool, but super cool... LOL 😀

Well I'm sure by now the adcom is sitting in it's chamber sipping on coffee and looking at our apps. Let's all get an acceptance tomorrow!!

Great rotation sites, its close to Chicago, it has a very high match rate. I just want a change of atmosphere from MSU, mainly.

The proximity to Chicago simply means expensive housing to me. If there was a medical school in the U.P. I would be there. I love the outdoors and nature way more than the city.

Surely you don't mean that lots of their graduates match into a residency, as if this was unique. Every DO school has a high match rate. Did you mean to say their grads get a lot of competitive reisdencies?

"Match Rate (Class of 2007):
79 percent into first or second residency choice, far surpasses national match rate of 68 percent"

I was just referring to this stat on their site. Your right every school has high match rates.

i'm in~~ withdrawing from all other schools (even MD's!!)

3.5 overall 3.6 science 31mcat

complete just over a week ago

Anyone else set up their campus visit for October 9? I noticed that there were only 2 spots left on that day, so I'm hoping we have some SDNers in the mix.

Good for you, may I ask why such a strong desire towards MSUCOM over other schools including MD?

I have a feeling that the class of 2012 is going to have a higher MCAT average than previous classes. Wasn't the average like 26 last year? MSUCOM has become the top choice for lots of students that could go MD if they wished to.

I don't blame them... MSUCOM is a great program, MSU medical school in general (MD or DO) are both sweet... they are my number #1 choice.

WOW!!! thanks mods for replacing my thread title 🙁

Last year 25% of the entering class had a MCAT of 29 or better at MSUCOM. I don't think many MD schools have started giving out acceptances yet, I want to see how many of so called "MD applicants" stick around once they start getting interviews/acceptances elsewhere.

I second that question; care to share your reasoning? Just curious.

Quick question:

How many pages were your Records of Nonacademic Experiences? I'm slightly concerned mine is too many pages.

thanks...and hopefully will be joining the cool admitted club soon 🙂

is it true that classes begin in the summer? I read on AACOM website that classes begin early. Anyone know more about this? MSUCOM is one of my top choices.

PS I will apply to MSUCOM for next year. No i havent submitted yet.

Classes do begin in the summer, at the very beginning of July. You only take one course, gross anatomy, and have it finished before the rest of your courses start at the end of August. I see this as a bonus, as you wont have anatomy hanging over your head once you start the first full semester, but I could see how others might not view this early start so favorably.

Mine was 9 pages, at 10pt font, using their format. There is a lot of time to cover from high school to the beginning of your graduate career, this should be pretty lengthy. Try to show that you are well rounded in your abilities and activities. Good Luck.😀

Thanks Biochemist! Mine is also 9 pgs and I was starting to wonder if they wanted something that long, but I didn't want to leave anything out since I know that there are high school activities that I am forgetting because that was WAY too long ago!!!

Why such a strong preference towards MSUCOM?

It came down to the fact that the DO I shadowed, and developed a VERY strong relationship with offered to pay for my Medical Education, with the agreement that I attend MSUCOM (his alma mater)

This doesn't bother me one bit as I plan on doing a FP/EM career as it is~~~Not to mention MSUCOM was my first choice in school largely do to their rankings and the type of student body they generally attract

Wow!! That's awesome!!! Were you accepted already?

I do agree with you that they seem to attract a really diverse population of students----if you can get use to how "rural" the East Lansing area is!!!

I had no idea MSUCOM had diversified student body.
HrvatskiDoktor, you must mean ages and the background of the students, huh?

Well thats a nice perk, free education...👍

Hello,

I was wondering how much time had elapsed from the time your AACOMAS application was processed, until hearing from MSUCOM for the Secondary Application?

Thanks!

Did that DO happen to be your dad? If not, you are very lucky.

does MSUCOM award scholarships? And if so, what is their criteria? For example, is it based on your stats (gpa+mcat) or is it given for other reasons (e.g. financial)?

Hey
I am new to this so bear with me . . .

MSUCOM is my first choice. My MCAT is about average, my GPA is a little below average but still above a 3.00. I struggled in graduate school too because I didn't quit work. My undergraduate major was history and public service, I graduated in 2003.

The other parts of my application are really strong. I am older, 26 and in state. I've been working as paramedic for 4 years now, as a critical care paramedic on a mobile intensive care unit for 3 years. I manage two clinical research trials. I've held a part time job in a neurolab as a research technician and had 2 publications from that so far. My volunteer and extracurricular stuff was long 12 pages, my essay was pretty good . . .

I got my secondary from MSU on 8/2 it was complete with letters on 9/19 (one letter took a while - he was out of the country). I know my letters are really good, one is from our medical director (D.O alum of MSU) for my company, he is also the one in charge of those clinical trials I am managing. The other was from a PhD with whom I did that neuro research.

How long do I wait before I get really nervous? I see that lots of people are already getting accepted without interviews and accepted quickly. What is the average time?

Thanks!

I think your fine, MSUCOM loves nontraditional students. I was complete about the same time as you 9/17, it just depends on if our application is in the top 20% of the pool of applicants. That is only when you to the committee for review. Just be patient, my numbers are average just like yours, so if we get lucky we might end up going in couple weeks or it might take a month or more. Good Luck

WOW whats with you people 9 pages, 12 pages of the EC's!!! LOL holy crap thats a lot, I didn't feel like listing every little activity I done. Man now I wished I should have. That thing was a major pain to fill out

I only had 3 pages. I had about 4 good experiences in each of their categories. No need to bore them to death.

For the activities, I just listed my major ones for each category. I think mine was 3 or 4 pages as well, I think listing every benefit walk you have ever donated to or some other equivalent example is a bit more than what they expect from you....I think they appreciate the variety of types of experiences rather than just how many EC's you could cram into your life!

mine was 6 pages.... hope that'll do!

Anyone else have their fingers crossed for this week? :luck:

I have similar stats as you do, and when I met with the admissions advisor in May, she told me not to expect to hear anything until late October/early November. It is all because of their algorthythm so the people who get looked at (go to committee) first are the 3.6+GPA and 30+ MCAT. They meet every Tuesday, so if you don't hear anything on Wednesday morning, follow the "no news is good news" addage.

I'm willing to bet that they don't read the details. I was given the impression that a long history of a lot of extra activities and service is what they are looking for. I was specifically told to go back to the beginning of High School and include every HOUR of service. That the 4th factor that goes into the algorthythm to determine who gets to committe.

I totally agree with scowdeva. They want to see variation in your life. Such as volunteering, sports whatever they just want to make sure your keeping busy😴

I bet that is true. I think they like long-term activities more than an hour here and one there. Whatever the case Scowdeva and I only had 3-4 pages and we are in there.
