MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is the hold up? How many people do you think the school has admitted so far? It seems like the few people left in this thread should have been admitted by now.

Looks like the days of MCAT scores of 26-27 are out at MSUCOM this year. Seems like those admitted are hitting closer to 29, or even low 30's. Hasn't anyone else noticed this scary trend this year? Or has it been like this in past years?

for whatever it's worth...last year, my friend was admitted w/ a 27...

Guys don't worry so much.. I have a 24 mcat and I had to get an extention from end of august to end of september. I was complete sept. 2 or somthing and received acceptance sept. 12 . So not everyone this year has a 29 or 30 mcat 😎. You just have to be patient. I garantee they can't look through every appt. they get in a week I mean they have thousands of people applying. Your time will come!!

It's too early to tell. If I'm not mistaken, their average MCAT score has been steadily rising over the years. There are people in this thread that have scored lower than 26 and were accepted. I am one of them. I have a friend who was admitted w/ a 23 a couple years ago if that makes you feel better. Keep your heads up!

Man, people are getting accepted as soon as they turn in their materials. I have been complete since July, and haven't heard a peep. In fact, I did call the school to make sure everything was submitted. I have a 4.0 chem degree and a 26 mcat... what's the deal? I thought I would have something by now.

I am with you wordup.... I don't have a 4.0 but was complete in July.

Jpc, you're a solid candidate. I have seen your stats. Do you think we're screwed for this year? New applications are constantly pouring in...

I don't know! I hope not.

🙁 Rejection Letter yesterday arrived in mail. Sigh!!! After I came back from work I checked my mailbox at 930 pm, and Lo and behold there it was. I was angry initially but now I'm just disappointed by the way I was treated. The letter said after a review of my community service, osteopathic interest, academic performance, and interview I was not offered admission. INTERVIEW WHAT INTERVIEW, My wait-list email from last year said I was guaranteed atleast an interview. I atleast thought I would be offered a wait-list spot. I was thinking about calling the associate dean and talking to him what happened? I did everything he had asked me to do. I don't think my MCAT was that bad. I had such high regard for the school, my brother is an alumni, and this was my second year applying there. Well everything happens for a reason right?

I sat on my bed last night holding the letter for 20 minutes as I was completely blindsided with this. Now I have it pinned to my door to remind me everyday to push me. Hopefully I will get an interview and acceptance somewhere (god willing). 😀 Good luck to all you that will be attending there next year I wish all of you guys the best, their faculty is great, and teachers are real caring. I was sick of E Lansing anyway maybe this change will be good. 😎

Cheer up brother,

Hope you get into somewhere this year!

and I'm sick of East Lansing, too.

Sorry you didn't get in bud =( but hell-- it's not the only school out there

On a side note---
I had my visitation to the campus today--- and I come with a pretty important(in my eyes) Nugget of information that one of the Admission's ladys said---

"Time spent in community service is the second most important factor in choosing applicants. First is the Science GPA, then Community Service"

By time spent, she wasn't meaning the # of hours, but the expressed commitment over long periods of time. They are after people who are committed to service, in a life-long sense...

This might make some of you worry more---- maybe it will make some of you relax a smidge-- Regardless- I wish you all the best- and hopefully I'll see some of you joining me next year =)

Alright- that probably was hard to understand, but hopefully you can glean something from that =)

Thanks for the insight!

Interview went pretty good!
Met few nice folks, visiting accepted-students, and MSUCOM students took us on a tour around the school. So, it does seem like I am the only interviewee so far. Everyone else that came today was accepted students.
Things of interest: Block curiculum(also, classes are combined wtih allo students), non-competitive academic environment(emphasized on team work aspect of academics), 27?? or 22?? hospitals for clinical programs (was told most people end up doing the residency through the same hospital. hence, easy transition), plus they have few hemotology-oncology residency available. Huge~ campus(most of the time is spent in one building, Fee Hall, I hear)
Emphasis on community service(they also look for people with good cs. record on app). Free Lunch and parking. GPS was life saver.
I heard app committee meets on tues. I'm expecting the news on wed~
oh, and watch out for MSU ducklings.

I think you are set! They only interview people they want!

Sorry to hear desijigga. Sounds like you are handling it well though. JPC did you apply last year as well?

Hold that thought speete, I was thrown another lifeline... 😀

My bud the Dean told me the admissions office made a mistake, they didn't include my MCAT score with my file. I will be called next week to schedule an interview. He was more surprised then me that I was rejected. 😱

does MSUCOM interview everyone this year?
i applied reallly late (january complete...) last year and was wait listed and rejected
i'm hoping for an interview with them this year
i completed my application earlier this week
btw, i also graduated from MSU last year
go green!

They only interview people if they have a special interest in them, but need to find out something about a glaring deficiency in your file. Mine was a special circumstance (admissions office being like total rejects and forgetting the MCAT SCORE)
Its usually either your in or not with them.

Good Luck this year my fellow spartan, I hope you the best....

They typically only interview out of staters or people they have reservations about accepting...so no, the vast majority of people arent interviewed. If you were placed on the waitlist in years previous, it is my understanding that you are guaranteed at least an interview (but they can outright accept you before the interview would be granted). Good luck!

Thanks, Good luck to you as well.
I know they send decisions on wednesdays so I'm hoping to have a reply in the next couple weeks.
I'd really like to stay instate and go to MSUCOM, but PCOM, DesMoines and Chicago are on top of my list as well.
Just want to stay in the midwest really, but yeah MSUCOM is my #1.
I called the office and asked who I should write out my letter of intent to and the lady said "letter of intents make no difference"
I was like...ok...

Whew, talk about a huge mistake!

HAHAHAHAHHAA, thats too funny....

You should write a letter of NO-Intent, that will definitely make a difference...

EDIT: MEATWAD, you should have heard my brother when I told him today about their MISTAKE!!! He was about to call the admissions office and give them a piece of his mind (he is a MSUCOM ALUM), I had to tell him not too...LOL

Bump to first page. Any news desi?

Got an interview invite email today, I have to call tomorrow and schedule a date.

So here is what happened, I guess they looked at my last years application (accidentally???) and rejected me. WTF!!! does this happen often, or is the office really that lazy. My question is should I bring this up during interview, and speak my mind to the admissions office? Should I complain or just shut my mouth and be glad with what I have? I do feel like I deserve an apology or some kind of better explanation then just it was an accident.

Although, you were wronged, I would bite the bullet and act like MSU treated you as a king.

Yeah, MSUCOM seems to make a lot of clerical errors. I first got an email saying to schedule an interview and then an email from the secretary saying they marked my file incorrectly and then I received my acceptance email (all within an hour).

However, I do know that MSUCOM has the policy where they mark on your file if you were ever rude or mean to a member of the faculty or staff at MSUCOM. So, in the end, play nice and hope you get in! If you say anything it negative, it could seriously hurt your interview.

They have their admissions meetings on Tuesdays and emails go out on Wednesdays.

Good luck.

yeah i'm pretty nervous about Wednesday
my file has been complete for about only 10 days
but i hope i get a response this week

Congrats on the interview invite. Like everyone else said, dude, just eat the poop sandwich they hand you. It's nothing compared to how often people are going to mess with you as a med student and a resident, so in the grand scheme of things, this is nothing to worry about at this point. At least you got that invite!

I'm sure people are getting in. Just remember that SDN isn't everyone. Probably about 10% of the premeds I know have heard of this site.

well then, what do you think is going on? When should people really start getting worried? December?

do not lose hope unless we get the rejection letter

I agree. I didn't know about this site until after I had gotten the e-mail and wanted to know more about MSUCOM so I googled it and stubbled upon SDN. SDN is awsome though and I wish I had known much earlier alot of information about medical school, other peoples stats, residencies, and is much better than hitting the refresh button of the e-mail when you gotta wait for schools to let you know about things. 😛
