MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they are meeting tomorrow...how exciting! Although I am not really expecting to hear back from them for a few more weeks

exciting? more like scary... :scared: :scared: :scared:

yeah lets hope they show us all some love
i've been hearing about people getting waitlist letters now
and that just worries me :-/

Hey Good luck everyone....
MSU vs UofM this weekend....
What if they made a rule....
No UofM undergrads allowed at MSU med schools
this would be fair because UofM seems to have a HUGE BIAS against MSU GRADS.....i know of people with 37+ on the MCAT from MSU not even given an interview at UofM

hey, did anyone apply to the do-phd program?

i talked to the dean of admissions. they want diversity hardcore, and they want people from around the country. He said only 26 people from MSU even applied last year, 4 got accepted and 2 decided to go. Any school that holds your undergraduate school against you, is one that you should not be interested in. Prestige is not a reason to go to a school...and I fell that a lot of people go there for that very reason, even though they dislike the coldness of the institution.

Is it really looking that way this year? It seems like most SDNers are IS at MSUCOM, even though its not an accurate representation. We just have to hope tomorrow is the day for the stragglers on this site.

I believe he was referring to U of M, not MSUCOM.

I transferred to Umich over MSU for the prestige reason... Worst mistake of my college career. Umich is teh suq. 'nuff said

Glad that I'm headed to MSU for med...

GL tomorrow all! I want more classmates..... and a roommate

I just wanted to add that MSUCOM is the most badass med school ever.

Haha, yeah I started at U of Michigan my freshman year and got out as quick as I could!!! I loooooved MSU, in my mind it is a much much cooler school! Glad I graduated from there, look forward to returning next fall! Good luck hearing something today, guys!:luck:

nothing in my inbox...wasnt really expecting anything yet though

Has the adcom even been meeting lately. It seems like everyone I've been talking to, including you guys, hasn't received any word... There's always next week.

Probably just a SDN thing...

Had the interview today!!!! 😀

It went pretty good, the inteviewer teaches OMM at the school. He basically asked about my grades, why interested in DO. Do I feel prepared for medical school. I loved my student host.,she was real nice and answered so many questions. Funny thing was I was the only one interviewing today, I guess nobody signed up for today 😱. I got some good one on one time with the financial aid advisor, director of admissions, and the associate dean. I was told to just patiently wait now (might be 2 weeks or maybe more) and hope for the best.

Got some interesting information about admissions: Class is about half way full or close to, there are 9 people on the admissions board. They did mention having a 3.5 and 26 are what your numbers should be around to be competitive (I think we all already knew that).

So good luck guys and I pray for the best for all of us. (Ughh I wanted to stay so bad it seemed like MSU was prepping for a big Halloween night (Couldn't I have work tomorrow early 👎). So many hot chicks walking around with skimpy costumes, God I love MSU :luck::luck::luck::luck:)

Spartans 28, UofM 24 😉

Hey desi, thx for the inside info. I guess 1/2 isn't that bad... i'm still worried as hell. I've been in the mix since August! Maybe we'll be in the same acceptance pile!

Hey everybody!

I know that if an applicant has a competitive gpa, but low MCAT things don't look so hot. BUT, if an applicant has excellent LOR - including one from a MSUCOM alum - and overall competitive everything else...how does that compare to other applicants?

If you do a search, someone posted on here a sort of formula they use to determine if you are in the top 20% that goes to committee. I know from talking to them they dont really care who the letters are from- one of mine was from a kid I went to school with since I was in kindergarten and the other was a local restaurant owner who knew me since I wore diapers. I have also been told that one of the major determining factors outside of stats is the level and length of commitment shown to community service-this is why they ask you to include high school activities, shows that it is something important to you and not just an application booster.

Do a search, something like admissions equation, and good luck! :luck:

glad your interview went well, desi
also thanks for the update about half the class being full
thats actually a huge relief for me
I'm still in total freak out mode tho :-/

Even though I haven't heard anything from MSUCOM yet, I'm thinking about taking genetics next semester. Do you think MSUCOM would allow people to take it pass/fail? I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask 😉

yay! GBG, If you're taking it next semester you'll be in the class with me! (u are at umich, right?) =)

I'll be the big guy that scowls all the time and usually has 1 or 2 black eyes... Kinda hard to miss, my glasses don't hide my injuries very well =)

Haha, yep, I'm at U of M! Glad to hear I'm not the only wolverine applying to MSUCOM 😉. I hear genetics here is rough though. I looked the professor up on ratemyprofessor and apparently the exams are "impossible". Ouch. :scared:

Oh, are you on the wrestling team?

Well Not on the wrestling team~~ I recently was Kicked from the boxing team because apparently it's against the rules to have a "professional" (2 pro fights) mma fighter compete in Amateur boxing..🙄.So I am in the process of getting my Pro-boxing card--- But I coach boxing, wrestling, and MMA, and get myself beat routinely by some of the boxers in the Detroit area..

Darktide your a Boxer?? sweet!!!! maybe you can set up a boxing club for DO students to relieve some stress. Only experience I have with boxing is this one boxing class at MSU, and Fight Night Rd 2... 😀

Sorry for this late post, but one of my friend got in this week to MSU-COM. Email on 10/31.

Good luck to all ...

Wayne State Class of 2012

Hey guys, I got i got an e-mail on 10/31 that I was admitted. It was a real surprise. I am an out of state applicant with a 3.6 gpa and 25 MCAT. I'm really not sure what to do though. I was also admitted to my state school, OU-COM. I think I am still going to check MSU out, but I'm just worried about the out of state tuition. Any advice?

You should definately check out the school and the area, if more nothing else but your own peace of mind. No one can tell you which school is a better fit for you.

That being said, I have worked for MSU for a year now (obviously living in the area too) and MSU is not my top choice....OU-COM actually is more appealing to me (if my last letter ever gets there...sorry, I've had USPS issues lately)!! PM me if you want to know more about living in the E. Lansing area!

Spartan nation has had its heart broken again 🙁🙁🙁🙁...

I hate Michigan, ughhhh!!! we were up by 10 pts, FREAKING 10 PTS...

Spartan nation is a huge disappointment....I was at both games....first last night #8 ranked MSU lost to Grand Valley State in basketball and now we hand the game to UofM......Thank god i wasnt rooting for MSU for both games.....

Hail to the victor valients hail to the countries heros hail hail to michigan the leaders and the best....

Remember all you MSUCOM applicants...if you go to MSU then there is chance of your hopes and dreams will be crushed by our lousy sports....

Wait we did win a Hockey Championship last year..NVMD

Good score prediction...just had to switch them around 😀

LOL Don't you worry bluegirl, you guys have our number in Football but we will still be the prime basketball program in the state for many years to come.

Are you serious? MSU basketball lost a ******ed exhibition game, who cares. Last year they almost knocked out NC and should have gone on to the sweet 16. Drew Neitzel is amazing, but this year he won't have to carry the team. Our prospects will provide plenty of help. Just watch them this year Big Ten Title and another Final Four run. AND god I hate the UOFM fight song, lol.

Hahahaha, if you are going to sing it, learn the words buddy! Hahahaha, that made me smile. Thanks!

One thing that has not been mentioned much is the fact that MSUCOM gives A LOT of money for "out of state scholarships" to help offset the cost of tuition. I believe that in my entering class there were 18 OOS students, all of which received this "scholarship". If you choose to attend, be sure to visit the school's web page and apply immediately. Hope that helps qualm some fears to OOS candidates...😳

tomorrow is the big day...i hope at least one of us gets in

Good Luck to everyone waiting, hopefully we hear some good news!:luck:

what time of the day do they send out their decisions? Looks like another week of waiting for me🙁

Im Innnnn!!!!! 10:34 a.m.

Its actually between CCOM, KCOM, and MSUCOM right now... where MSUCOM=CCOM>KCOM. It is a tough decision!

Yay! I have a new classmate!

Where ya from?
