I was wondering if you could help out a flight doc trying to do right for his patient:

How do I get somebody referred to an MTF which provides in-vitro fertilization services? I know it is not fully covered by Tricare, but as of a few years ago this program existed at MTFs with formal training programs.

We are not located in the catchment area of any of the major DoD MTFs. This member is being given the run around by Tricare and the bureaucracy, and I'd like vectors direct to the field. Please PM if you don't want anything posted publicly. Thanks.

I know that BAMC in San Antonio had a program (when I looked into it a few years ago) whereby Tricare covered all of the cost, except the actual manipulation of the ova and spermatazoa (ICSI or In Vitro portion). The preop, removal and implantation are all covered. Price ends up around $8k.

NCC had a program too, though I don't remember the details as well.

Talk to your clinic/hospitals tricare referral management people. They will be a good start. The other place to try would be getting a contact for the actual REI service at the hospital you would want them to go to and contact them directly.

For insane tricare contract and chcs regionality issues this will probably end up being way harder than it should be.

It's hard to find a MTF that does in vitro. I'll be honest with you, I don't know of any off the top of my head. At my previous institution, Tricare would cover medications for the woman. However, the patients had to pay for the technical component - egg harvesting, icsi, etc.

Otherwise I would start calling MTFs in the area where you're at - specifically Ob/Gyn and find out if they have reproductive endocrinology infertility specialists there.

I know they do it at Naval Medical Center San Diego, or at least I have known of members having the procedure done there.

Walter Reed has a REI program. Folks get IVF treatment there. I don't know the specifics of what and what's not covered for IVF. I'd start with contacting the Ob/Gyn department there.
