Hey,
I am a Canadian MS3 interested in ortho. I'm not sure what it's like in the states, but up here many ortho staff in academic hospitals have >1 fellowship. Often 1 of which is trauma, the other is XX (eg. arthroplasty, hand, spine, etc.).

In these cases, their practice will be primarily XX with 1 day/wk of uncomplicated trauma cases.

Is it possible to do say a LE arthroplasty fellowship and a foot & ankle fellowship and practice both?

I appreciate that this is not very relevant yet, but I am interested.
Thanks a ton.

Yes, kind of. There are sports fellowships, but I don't know of specific lower extremity arthroscopy fellowships. In orthopaedics you can do any combo of fellowships and practice within whatever scope you wish, if you find the right opportunity. Concentrating on the lower extremity can certainly be done, however, I don't know why one would pursue both sports and ankle. Do either sports or ankle, and tailor your practice to your interests.

Thanks. So if I were interested in say spine and joint replacements, than I could set up my practice to do both? Other than trauma and XX, the only two fellowship trained areas I've seen combined are tumor and arthroplasty. I just didn't know if anything else could be put together.

Thanks again.

I know of a guy who did a spine and trauma fellowship and now he has a busy practice as a trauma surgeon but his niche is trauma at the spino-pelvic junction.

As mentioned, double-fellowships for the Canucks is pretty much the standard. I trained with a couple of Canadian Orthopods. One did an "upper extremity" fellowship (lots of shoulder & elbow) before doing a Hand fellowship. The other did a Hand fellowship and then a peripheral nerve fellowship. I know other Canadian Orthopods who have done Hand and then a Pedi Hand super-fellowship. From what the Canadians that I know have said, most folks focus on one area, but that second fellowship is pretty necessary to get an appointment at an academic center.
