There are a few programs (boston childrens, UCLA) where I applied to both the categorical and primary care tracks. I have not heard anything from these programs yet. From their websites, it seems like programs that have more than one track consider each application seperately. Does this mean that you receive seperate interview offers and rejections from these programs, or will they offer you interviews or a rejection for both tracks? If I am more interested in one track, is there any point in sending an email expressing that to these programs before an application decision is made? Thanks!

Here is my impression after speaking with the residency coordinator. If anyone has different knowledge, please correct me.

When you are invited to interview, the email says to tell the residency coordinator if you are interested in applying to any of their tracks (they kind of have four: 1)Categorical, 2) Research, 3) CHAT, 4) Combined Genetics/Peds 5 yr track). The Genetics track sounds like a separate application process, but the other 3 go through a single application. When you interview, they try to make faculty and residents from the track available for you to talk to and answer any questions you may have. If you end up matching at the program, you can choose to enter the other tracks.

I think there used to be a separate application for CHAT and they just haven't updated ERAS to reflect that it is no longer a separate process.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Twilburys is right. Last year for UCLA, even though you can check the box on ERAS (or, as least you could last year) to apply to each special track, they don't send out separate email invites. You can either talk to the residency coordinator before the interview to indicate a special interest in one of the other tracks or wait until interview day.

During my interview day at UCLA, they had the CHAT program give a special presentation to us. Then they asked who was interested, and then they rearranged their faculty interviews to include one with the CHAT program admins. It felt really last minute. As for when/how you indicate your preference of tracks if you were interested in one of the alternative tracks, I have no idea (I was just interested in the categorical).

Thanks for the replies! Does anyone know if the seperate tracks are handled the same way at other programs (Boston, DC Children's)?
