MUSC Charleston Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed there a few months ago. It was probably the smallest program I interviewed at but it will certainly be high on my list come February. Dr. Lewin (the program director) was super nice as was the dept. chair. The residents were cool as well and didn't take themselves too seriously (can't say that about every program I've been to). Facilities were nice (plasma/lcd's were mounted on the wall in some signout rooms). Autopsy suite was clean and well ventilated. While I was there I think there were in the process of hiring a second or third PA, in any event scutwork is minimal. The dept. chair is devoted to resident education and willing to provide funding when improvements are needed. Definitely worth a visit I think. Research isn't particularly emphasized here but available if you're interested. Charleston is a smaller town but most of my family live in SC so it'd be like a homecoming for me. And if you're interested in hemepath, they have a fellowship there and they tend to take their own. Again, I'd recommend you check it out for yourself. I'm finding that so much of this is about finding a good fit.

Their website says they have dermpath, cytopath, heme, forensics and surg path fellowships. Is that correct?

Yep, they do. Did I mention that residents get an entire day to preview their slides before sign out. Good stuff.

Anybody interview or know anything about this program?

I interviewed at MUSC a couple of years back and thought it was an excellent program for those intending to enter private practice. The atmosphere was great, and education and workload appeared well balanced. The residents were very friendly and happy. MUSC ended up being very high on my rank list -- it would have been a slam dunk if we had family nearby.

And just think... it's only a few blocks from the beach! 😍

How competitive do either of you feel this program is? e.g USMLE scores etc.

That's going to be impossible to gauge. If you're interested in MUSC, apply and see what happens. It's really that simple.

I agree. I'd say you have a shot if you passed step 1.
