Music for studying

What does everybody listen to when they study? Recommendations?

I've found Drum n Bass (DnB) to be awesome, for those that like electronic. High bpm to keep you awake and pumped, minimal distracting vocals, and a melody just repetitive enough to become background noise without being boring.

Classical music channel on Pandora. I'm more efficient with Classical music than any other genre. I can't study with Classic Rock, my all-time favorite genre. I end up singing and/or jamming out to the song!

I have, and probably always will be, a sucker for soundtracks to movies and video games.

I feel good soundtracks are designed never to become the focal point, but to sit in the background and "make the scene". When I study a good soundtrack will never overpower my own thoughts and focus, but make the experience feel a bit deeper.
 
Only thing I can handle is classical otherwise I get distracted... I suppose I should try a few other genres without vocals though.

i rarely listen to music while studying because i get overly analytical about it, and i dont like to have it just humming in the background.

I have an 'instrumental' channel on Pandora that has a bunch of soundtracks (not the ones with words), as well as instrumental versions of a lot of pop songs (a lot of Green Day seems to pop up, for some reason).

Country or classical. Country tells a lot of stories though so it can be distracting. Not for the study music amateurs.
 
It's not music...but I swear by white noise generators like simplynoise.com Really helps me tune everything out and just focus on the task at hand

If you really want music though check out the podcasts Music for programming. Sort of ambient electronic, not too distracting

I think that assessing whether writing in the first person adds to a post is very helpful advice. But given that there is still a trend toward more personal writing styles, and that blogs are by their nature personal, I wonder whether you could say more about how you would gauge whether to write in first person or not.
 
I love to use focusatwill.com. You can set timers and set genres of music. Pretty awesome.

I'm a bit different than your average med student. My main love is industrial (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbnhgNrGstE&list=PL5CCA95DF93748978 or http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL884ED7C5FF221D3D). I mostly listen to uninterrupted internet radio (ampedout) via shoutcast.com You can find all kinds of types of music without commercials. I also listen to hardcore, death metal, black metal, and psy goa trance while I study. I agree entirely with the "avoid vocals" sentiment while studying. I'm addicted to music, listen to it nearly 90% of my waking hours, but can't handle vocals while studying.

Damn, I am shocked at the amount of people who listen to music while studying! I find it super distracting... dunno why, I guess subconsciously I just associate music with relaxing. It's more like something I would do on my study break, having music playing while studying just takes me out of the zone.
