The problem with Malmsteen is that he improvs too much. There is basic structure to his songs but his soloing is a little "show-off-ish." He's quite talented and proclaims classical music training (however, he admits to being self-taught and inspired by classical composers like Bach and Vivaldi and other Baroque composers); but if you listen to the various songs throughout the 80's and 90's, you'll see that his guitar solos follow a pretty predictable, unoriginal theme. When he describes his solos, he will use terms like "myxolydian" and "phrygian" but if you really listen closely to his scales and you have minimal background in classical composition, you quickly realize that his solos really fall into neither category. Plus, when you listen to Malmsteen, you realize that there really is no "soul" into his music, compared to Satch. Which is why if you actually watch the G3-Live in Denver concert, Malmsteen really sticks out like a sore thumb when on the stage with Satch and Vai.uhoh! said:

My current favorite shredder is Paul Gilbert. Really great technique, groove and sense of humor! He does get a little too predictable at times (shredding modes in three notes per string...very stock) but still, the Racer X stuff is killer. 👍
Ha! I wish! I have the guitar music/tab books for some of his albums like "Rising Force", "Odyssey", and "Trilogy." But since most of his guitar solos are improvised and are hard to get down on paper, I've actually compared the notes to the albums and they're different. And the fingering is off so I gave up. I can play a few Yngwie-esque scales and arpeggios but my ability to play Yngwie's stuff is still severely limited. The problem is that I picked up the guitar later in life. I asked my parents if I could play the guitar as a kid. Since, I'm asian all I got was a smack in the face and a "you're playing violin. end of story." I had to cry myself to sleep every night. Didn't buy my first electric guitar and amp until 1st year med school which was a total joke and afforded me much time to play guitar and pick up other hobbies.Fenriz said:

No snow here yet but the days have been increasingly cold and grey. I live in the suburbs and sometimes have to walk to the store around the corner after dark and on a clear cold night with a full moon I can almost hear "Freezing Moon" by Mayhem on the cold wind...
So far, been listening to some Emperor (reunited!) "In the Nightside Eclipse" with their FANTASTIC cover of "A Fine Day to Die" by Bathory. Watain, "Casus Luciferi" and Mayhem "Deathcrush."
I eagerly awaiting my Immolation album ("Here in After") that should be arriving soon in the mail so that will soon be in heavy rotation.

"Pure Holocaust" and "Battles in the North" here!began appreciating Emperor recently..but didn't really like Mayhem.they seem like a band which would grow on you.sadly(for them?me?) am also sinking my teeth into "Goat Horns" and "Lunar Poetry" by Nokturnal Mortum..So frickin beautiful!these guys create soundscapes like i could not believe..i cant wait for the residency money to begin rolling in.have so many CDs to get!!spent most of this holiday building my "wish-list" for CDs to ask for..hoping sanity descends,and i am given a say in what i get for christmas.. 😀

I actually have to disagree that the bit of music is happy-happy. For one thing, it's not in an outright major key. It's not minor either, it's that in-between key which many years out of music lessons have enabled me to forget the name of. It's the key that has always sounded rather wistful to me.
If it was happy-happy I would be thinking of marshmallows floating in hot cocoa with a peppermint candycane for a stir-stick. Instead, I thought of that picture... 🙂

If you like Emperor check out an album called "Nord" by Setherial. Very Emperor-influenced although I like it better than a lot of Emperor stuff (better subtlety, better melodies and Emperor strikes me as a bit bombastic at times). Great stuff to play on a cold winter day (or night)!
Also, if you haven't already, you MUST check out Dissection. "The Somberlain" or "Storm of the Light's Bane" are both absolute melodic black metal classics. Many people will tell you "The Somberlain" is the better album but I like "Storm..." a bit better because there's just something extra vicious about the songs on that album...

you know how, when you get greedy and are fairly loaded, you get a lot more albums than you can pay attention to, and some of them are dismissed on first listen if you dont find them good enough/are not in the mood, and they lie in a dark corner of the room,gathering dust...that's what happened to a lot of the Black i am now listening to. can't believe i put aside all this stuff!!(incl. Immortal, Immolation, Emperor, Mayhem among others!!must have been frickin' drunk or something)..really got into the death/grind/gore stuff, and gave Black the right royal miss..anyhow, i got a load of albums, but didn't do them justice at all. now i begin another foray into BM, after a looong time.and this time i plan to take it slow, one band at a time..

1.) Sacramentum - "Far Away From the Sun." This cd will be tough to find (used on Amazon it goes for around $30) but it's worth the effort. Many people call this band a "Dissection clone" and although their sound (guitars, vocals, etc) is almost identical to Dissection I think they are a bit better in terms of songwriting. They're also a bit more atonal/chromatic but have these brilliant, beautiful bursts of melody/harmony in some of the songs that are just great.
2.) Dawn - all albums. These guys are also a Swedish melodic black metal band. Great stuff. You have to be careful though...there is another band out there by the same name that is complete crap. All the albums by Dawn are great but I particularly like "Naer Solen Gar Niber For Evogher" ("When The Sun Never Again Rises") and "Slaughtersun - Crown of the Triarchy."
3.) Watain - if you're looking for angry, hateful stuff this is black metal similar to Dissection but these guys make Dissection's music sound like Britney Spears. There is not a trace of warmth or humanity in any of these guys' songs. Both their albums are highly respected: "Rabid Death's Curse" and "Casus Luciferi."
And if you mean bands similar to Immolation then I would say:
1.) Incantation: "Onward to Golgotha" or "Diabolical Conquest." No band heavier...
2.) Suffocation: my favorites are "Pierced from Within" and "Despise the Sun" though I haven't heard "Effigy of the Forgotten" and people tend to swear by that album. No explanation needed here...these guys are legends.

I shall join the ranks of the metalheads here. I love Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera, Meshuggah, Tool as well as some of the newer metal like Shadow's Fall and Killswitch Engage. I've managed to keep my guitars through med school. Another med student and I used to get together once a week and jam to Metallica at full volume with a case of beer in tow. Unfortunately, I have found less time to play as residency has progressed. However, my wife is an FP resident so when she's on call, I get to crank it, which I plan on doing tomorrow.

..just blew everyone away, and took things to a whole new level!!! Sadly, I couldn't stay on for Exodus, which sucked. What sucked even more was Cryptopsy couldn't get the darn visa to come for the gig!! Still, a bleedin' awesome show to go to..
Anyone up for the Maryland DeathFest on May 27-28 in Baltimore? The lineup is a killer, and I'm definitely going now..Have no idea when I will get a weekend followed by a relaxed Monday to coincide with a gig once residency begins..So I'm getting in all these "things I won't have time for later" kind of goofing off I can now..

Glad to see you resurrected this thread Uhoh. I wanted to go see that Suffoc/Immolation show at BB King's but blew it off after I heard Cryptopsy had to drop out. My loss though since Suffocation and Exodus are great bands. Would have really liked to see Immolation most though.
Did you catch the Morbid Angel show earlier in April? I was there for that and it was awesome. Morbid Angel was great and they only did stuff from the first four albums (since Vincent is back)...fantastic stuff: "Day of Suffering" "Sacred Rites." "Chapel of Ghouls" was the encore.
But the guys who really stole the show were Krisiun. They came on second and absolutely destroyed during their set. They, more than anyone else, made me wish I was down front against the barricade banging and throwing the horns. They were really into the crowd and just put on a great show.
The Deathfest sounds tempting and it's just after I graduate so it could be a celebratory kind of thing but I have to see. The line-up is pretty sweet especially since Demilich is playing (they're supposedly disbanding after playing the Deathfest).
I'm really psyched about Dissection playing BB King's in July. I'll definitely try my hardest to make it down for that. Cryptopsy and Emperor also in July, Celtic Frost in Sept. It just doesn't get any better!!!

Just saw the most INSANE CD collection ever at this dude's place..Looking forward to spending a lot of money come residency. As warm up, made do with the Krisiun Live Armageddon DVD..They are so friggin' TIGHT! And the envy grows deeper with you going to see Dissection..Didn't they disband or something? With that sound system, Dissection, Cryptopsy, Emperor, Celtic Frost..Shoot me now, and don't let me know how mind-blowing it was.
By the way, I plan to buy a good Music System asap once Residency begins. Suggestions? (Considerations:Will play Metal only, I'll be living in an apartment)

Andy is absolutely right. Speaker quality generally equals system quality. I used to be a big proponent of Sony stereo products but I've generally found them to be of toilet-level quality lately. Don't know much about other systems though. I would probably just read some reviews online...
Regarding speakers, there's a company based out of Brooklyn called Ohm-Walsh that is widely regarded as the pinnacle. Speakers are custom designed and they only begin building the speakers after you have sent them the specs of the room you will be putting them in (dimensions, layout, what the walls are made of, etc.) in addition to the style of music you will be playing, typical volume you play at, etc. After that you get a two week (I think) in-home trial to see if they measure up. The draw-back is that the speakers are only good for THAT room. They may have started producing a generic line but I don't know...
I'm betting Andy might chime in extoling the virtues of Cambridge Soundworks but I don't know...just a hunch 🙂 . I think they're generally good but I haven't heard them much. All of this stuff is of course pricey...

They're from Austria and play black metal that's all about the Lord of the Rings. It's 100% dorky, I know, but damn if these guys don't make some awesome ambient black metal. Check out "Through the Forest of Dol Guldur" off Minas Morgul...
