Actually, I've read that all people are born into Islam. We're born into a state of purity, one in which our souls are naturally inclined towards genuine monotheism. I believe it's called the "fitra." It's over time that humans corrupt the fitra and learn ignoble behavior.Nope. You aren't born into Islam, you have to practise it.

Why is that even worth mentioning? Has it gotten so bad that the words "Muslim" or "Islam" are immediately associated with extremism, terror, backwardness, etc? Why don't people think of Muslims as average people? People with families, careers, interests, goals, and so on? They really aren't any different. There are a few bad apples in every society nothing to do with religion etc....
Born Muslim turned atheist lol. Would you like to share with us why?
Are there any members of new-age Muslims? (try be tolerant)

Are any of you guys involved in MSAs at school? Would you want to continue involvement in med school?
I'm curious as to how many of the Muslims here pray 5 times a day.

Yes it has. The two major wars the US is involved in are fought entirely by Islamic extremists, not christian, Jewish, or Hindu extremists. Islamic extremists also destroyed the WTC. Fair or not, Islam is associated with extremist violent activity that threatens to destabilize a critical region in the world.
Also for consideration, when I say Columbine, you probably automatically associate school shootings with it. Even though that happened years ago and today it functions like a normal HS, it still has a pretty bad rap.
1. Christian(sic) armies have killed more innocent civilians than any Muslim extremist has ever dreamed of. ~50 million dead in WWI, ~7 million dead in WWII, 2 million in Vietnam, etc. How many civilians have Muslim extremists killed over the last century, 10,000? 100,000? 1,000,000?
Get the point? Read about this:

2. Post-911, none of the US's massacres and mass-murders have been committed by Muslims.

Almost the same, though I'm agnostic.born/raised muslim and now atheist. does that count?
This is absurd. Just because the majority of the people in an army are Christian, it does not make them a "Christian Army." That is absolutely ridiculous. The people in those situations fought for political ideals, NOT RELIGIOUS ones. Muslim extremists, however, focus primarily upon religious ideology that also supports their political agenda.
These numbers are WAY off too. There were 37 million deaths in WWI and 72 million in WWII according to current estimates. And a significant proportion of the deaths in WWI are due to the 1918 influenza strain that may have killed well over 50 million people worldwide. I guess that was a "Christian virus" too since it happened during a "Christian war." Your argument is laughable.
Not sure but recent events hint towards Europeans and especially Asians. I mean the 4 past events I can think of was done by Asians/ Europeans....Virginia Tech....greyhound bus (eating the face and decap)....Vietnamese dude killing immigrants...Timothy McVeight (who actually was CAUGHT doing the action of crashing a plane...no hypothesis there)...The guy who terrorized the carribean flight (Stephen something....who was also CAUGHT doing it) no hypothesis like the others. But some people just wanna hear what they wanna hear....and wasnt 9/11 really convenient for the election time? I dont like politics, and will not go in any further...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh
Bravo, sir. Less than 24 hours from "Any Muslim premeds?" to 9/11 truther conspiracy theories. Anyone want to guess how long this thread will last?
Edit: And no, it wasn't "convenient for the election time". It was nowhere near "the election time".
I guess peace will always be a dream 🙁
And when was Islam ever at war with the US(West)? The conflicts in Muslim regions are not based on theological differences; wars occur because of political differences.
This thread was made with the intent of getting to know other Muslim pre-meds. Unfortunately, some people view it necessary to bash anything that hints at being Muslim. It's funny how racism, prejudice and stereotypes are all legitimate when dealing with Muslims.
Look at the previous posts; what were the Muslim posters talking about? When you attack Islam(Muslims), expect to create a lot of controversy. After all, there are 1.5 billion Muslims on the face of the Earth.
I'm Muslim, and I think this thread is the dumbest thing I've seen.
I consider myself reasonably practicing (I will step into a mosque every week, and make sure a day does not go by without prayer (salaat)).
But this thread is idiotic. There is no point to seeing how many "muslim" pre-meds there are. Why? Well you can see that it degenerates into a thread of who technically counts as a muslim, and "what happens" when you're born, etc.
So, OP, this was a horrible idea. And whoever is using the argument that muslim extremists use religious ideology to meet political ends is wrong. It's actually the other way around, which is why it's a huge problem. They are using political situations to justify certain views, which is why the West will never win these wars militarily. Ever.
All in all, horrible thread, please close it. I'm a Muslim, and proud. If I wasn't proud to be a Muslim, believe me I would have left the religion a long time ago. Clearly I've managed to convince myself that what I am following is correct. That should be good enough for everybody to not judge me, as long as I do not advocate anything that is clearly illegal by international law (which is mostly reasonable).
I recommend closing this thread before I start venting more of my anger (remember my thread a few months ago), at the stupidity of some posters.
I wasnt trying to derail a thread, I was merely pointing out that because of RECENT events in US history and their undeniably strong ties to Islamic extremists (NOTE HOW I DO NOT CALL THEM MUSLIMS--they obviously dont behave/believe in the same things Muslims do) it is impossible to not associate terrorist activity with Islam. Just like it is impossible not to associate school shootings with Columbine. Thats all I was saying, if you want to read into it and derail the thread, have at it.
I just think it's unfair how the actions and behavior of such a small minority of Muslims have almost exclusively become the sole presentation of Islam/Muslims to the average layperson. One out of every five people in the world is a Muslim, and the vast, vast majority of these people are average human beings. They have families, run businesses, raise children, and strive to make ends meet like all other people. It's very unfortunate that the introduction many people have to Islam/Muslims is already framed in terms of buzzwords like "terror" and "extremism." That's really all I was getting at.Yes it has. The two major wars the US is involved in are fought entirely by Islamic extremists, not christian, Jewish, or Hindu extremists. Islamic extremists also destroyed the WTC. Fair or not, Islam is associated with extremist violent activity that threatens to destabilize a critical region in the world.

I am a Shi'a.
