Salamz,

Any Muslim premeds around?

born/raised muslim and now atheist. does that count?

Walaikum as-Salaam,

What it is. Let's does this.

Nope. You aren't born into Islam, you have to practise it.

I've noticed that Muslim youth usually fall into two categories:

1. Trouble-makers-->Usually become taxi drivers, open shawarma shops or go into the construction business.
2. Over-Achievers-->90% become doctors or engineers

Maybe this is only in the Midwest?

lol.
My friends introduced me to shawarma....good stuff.

Actually, I've read that all people are born into Islam. We're born into a state of purity, one in which our souls are naturally inclined towards genuine monotheism. I believe it's called the "fitra." It's over time that humans corrupt the fitra and learn ignoble behavior.

Are any of you guys involved in MSAs at school? Would you want to continue involvement in med school?

Sorry, what I wrote was pretty ambiguous...

Indeed, all children are born into Islam. That's why children who die automatically enter heaven.

What I meant to say is that you can't claim to be Muslim if you're not a practising Muslim; ie you're not Muslim by birth.

I'm not really involved in the MSA. Hopefully I can get more active within the MSA in the future.

There are a few bad apples in every society nothing to do with religion etc....
Why is that even worth mentioning? Has it gotten so bad that the words "Muslim" or "Islam" are immediately associated with extremism, terror, backwardness, etc? Why don't people think of Muslims as average people? People with families, careers, interests, goals, and so on? They really aren't any different.

Born Muslim turned atheist lol. Would you like to share with us why?

Are there any members of new-age Muslims? (try be tolerant)

if you want to create a thread in all students forum or something i would be happy to discuss it. i don't feel pre-allo is the proper place to do it.

Eh, I'm somewhat involved with the MSA. I only show up when I have to pray. Other than that I don't attend their meetings. I went to private Islamic school since the age of 4 to 14...there isn't much I can learn from them, anyways.

Assalamualakum brother,

I am muslim too, my name is Zakaria Abu-Makar, nice to meet you. I like to have fun and play games and beat my friends at crossfire and xgenstudios 😀😀😀😀😀

Interesting that people took the muslim--->non-muslim route.....i had a few digressions here and there within a small period of time, but that allowed me to become a better muslim now....

Muslim student here. Nice to see there are a few on SDN

I'm curious as to how many of the Muslims here pray 5 times a day.

Oy, I just came from the religion debate in pre-osteo. You might want to check it out, a Muslim resident posted some good stuff.

probably 0!

lol.. even if somebody does - they must do it out of guilt..hehe.. no one knows for sure if god exist.. I think us Pre-meds must be very neuotic about god's existence since a lot of the process in mere chance and luck..

I do...and any real Muslim does 😉

Yes it has. The two major wars the US is involved in are fought entirely by Islamic extremists, not christian, Jewish, or Hindu extremists. Islamic extremists also destroyed the WTC. Fair or not, Islam is associated with extremist violent activity that threatens to destabilize a critical region in the world.

Also for consideration, when I say Columbine, you probably automatically associate school shootings with it. Even though that happened years ago and today it functions like a normal HS, it still has a pretty bad rap.

1. Christian(sic) armies have killed more innocent civilians than any Muslim extremist has ever dreamed of. ~50 million dead in WWI, ~7 million dead in WWII, 2 million in Vietnam, etc. How many civilians have Muslim extremists killed over the last century, 10,000? 100,000? 1,000,000?

Get the point? Read about this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_Massacre

2. Post-911, none of the US's massacres and mass-murders have been committed by Muslims.

This is absurd. Just because the majority of the people in an army are Christian, it does not make them a "Christian Army." That is absolutely ridiculous. The people in those situations fought for political ideals, NOT RELIGIOUS ones. Muslim extremists, however, focus primarily upon religious ideology that also supports their political agenda.

I have seen many Muslim premed threads get shut down due to digressions into topics about politics. Religious threads have a tendency to spiral out of control very quickly. My advice, to try to keep this thread alive for a long time, is to keep the focus on being a pre-med and Muslim, and how to consolidate the two aspects of a Muslim's students life. Let's not lose focus about what this site is intended for.

Good luck everyone with the pursuit of medicine.

These numbers are WAY off too. There were 37 million deaths in WWI and 72 million in WWII according to current estimates. And a significant proportion of the deaths in WWI are due to the 1918 influenza strain that may have killed well over 50 million people worldwide. I guess that was a "Christian virus" too since it happened during a "Christian war." Your argument is laughable.

Did you notice "sic" after Christian? He stated that "Islamic" extremists were responsible for the two current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, so I responded by saying "Christian" armies had killed millions of civilians during the last century.

Amazingly, a story about the role of religious soldiers in Afghanistan has popped up today:

Again, do you understand the meaning of "sic"?

Edit:

The numbers of civilians killed in WWII is debatable, but it is defiantly >40 million. Likewise, the number of civilians killed in WWI is close to 7 million.

Even if your numbers are correct, this does not nullify my point. Western Armies would have still killed more civilians than the extremists of the 20-21st century.

Not sure but recent events hint towards Europeans and especially Asians. I mean the 4 past events I can think of was done by Asians/ Europeans....Virginia Tech....greyhound bus (eating the face and decap)....Vietnamese dude killing immigrants...Timothy McVeight (who actually was CAUGHT doing the action of crashing a plane...no hypothesis there)...The guy who terrorized the carribean flight (Stephen something....who was also CAUGHT doing it) no hypothesis like the others. But some people just wanna hear what they wanna hear....and wasnt 9/11 really convenient for the election time? I dont like politics, and will not go in any further...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh

I am not a mod, but...

MAKE SURE TO KEEP THIS THREAD ON TOPIC!

9/11 etc does not in any way relate to being a Muslim Pre-med. NO POLITICS!
There is a separate sociopolitical forum for that.

In line with that, no bashing... no bashing Muslims, no bashing Non-Muslims, don't bash people follow the tenets of Islam, don't bash those who don't.. Come on, be sane, be practical and be good. Is it that hard?

Bravo, sir. Less than 24 hours from "Any Muslim premeds?" to 9/11 truther conspiracy theories. Anyone want to guess how long this thread will last?

Edit: And no, it wasn't "convenient for the election time". It was nowhere near "the election time".

This thread was made with the intent of getting to know other Muslim pre-meds. Unfortunately, some people view it necessary to bash anything that hints at being Muslim. It's funny how racism, prejudice and stereotypes are all legitimate when dealing with Muslims.

Look at the previous posts; what were the Muslim posters talking about? When you attack Islam(Muslims), expect to create a lot of controversy. After all, there are 1.5 billion Muslims on the face of the Earth.

I guess peace will always be a dream 🙁

And when was Islam ever at war with the US(West)? The conflicts in Muslim regions are not based on theological differences; wars occur because of political differences.

To clarify what I meant, i wasn't talking about war. I was just commenting that it seems that tempers always flare when topics such as religion come up and I wish we all could remain peaceful and respectful to one another.

Funky, please another one in big red font.
Somehow people ignored it

I'm Muslim, and I think this thread is the dumbest thing I've seen.

I consider myself reasonably practicing (I will step into a mosque every week, and make sure a day does not go by without prayer (salaat)).

But this thread is idiotic. There is no point to seeing how many "muslim" pre-meds there are. Why? Well you can see that it degenerates into a thread of who technically counts as a muslim, and "what happens" when you're born, etc.

So, OP, this was a horrible idea. And whoever is using the argument that muslim extremists use religious ideology to meet political ends is wrong. It's actually the other way around, which is why it's a huge problem. They are using political situations to justify certain views, which is why the West will never win these wars militarily. Ever.

All in all, horrible thread, please close it. I'm a Muslim, and proud. If I wasn't proud to be a Muslim, believe me I would have left the religion a long time ago. Clearly I've managed to convince myself that what I am following is correct. That should be good enough for everybody to not judge me, as long as I do not advocate anything that is clearly illegal by international law (which is mostly reasonable).

I recommend closing this thread before I start venting more of my anger (remember my thread a few months ago), at the stupidity of some posters.

I wasnt trying to derail a thread, I was merely pointing out that because of RECENT events in US history and their undeniably strong ties to Islamic extremists (NOTE HOW I DO NOT CALL THEM MUSLIMS--they obviously dont behave/believe in the same things Muslims do) it is impossible to not associate terrorist activity with Islam. Just like it is impossible not to associate school shootings with Columbine. Thats all I was saying, if you want to read into it and derail the thread, have at it.

The point of this thread is not to see how many Muslims premeds there are.

Firstly, there is no such thing as a practicing/non-practicing Muslim. Anybody that says "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger" is Muslim.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a "Muslim" extremist? Proof:

145. Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The deen is easy. Anyone who makes the deen too hard on himself will find it becomes too much for him. So aim for what is right, follow a middle path, accept the good news of the reward for right action, and seek help [to reach your goal by being constant in worshipping] in the morning, evening and some of the night."[al-Bukhari]

Thridly, "extremists" have a political agenda; all attempts to link extremist acts with Islam are illogical, baseless and are backed by anti-Muslim agendas.

Its always interesting to see people who are "born" Muslims and then become atheists. www.faithfreedom.org is their eternal abode!

Dude...Islamic=Muslim.

Are you justifying stereotyping of Muslims?

It would be more appropriate to say:

If school shooting=columbine, then
Terrorist activity = 911

Assalamualaikum all my muslim brothers (maybe sisters, if there are any here). I am a Muslim. Inshallah I plan on taking time off between college and med school to complete hifz-ul-Quran.

Inshallah

I just think it's unfair how the actions and behavior of such a small minority of Muslims have almost exclusively become the sole presentation of Islam/Muslims to the average layperson. One out of every five people in the world is a Muslim, and the vast, vast majority of these people are average human beings. They have families, run businesses, raise children, and strive to make ends meet like all other people. It's very unfortunate that the introduction many people have to Islam/Muslims is already framed in terms of buzzwords like "terror" and "extremism." That's really all I was getting at.

I'm curious as to how many of the Muslims here pray 5 times a day.

hahaha woah, I never would have guessed. everytime I read your posts, I think you're crazy. like seriously, crazy.

okay. i was not going to indulge in this thread but I'm Muslim and this is just getting ridiculous at this point, you knew people would start arguing about crap from the DO thread.

and just to add

Jasmine was hot. def the hottest disney character of all time
