Could someone please outline the general timeline for taking USMLE steps I-III in medical school and when one applys to residency and when one finds out when they've been accepted to residency?

When do you take USMLE I, when do you get you're score?
When do you take USMLE II, when do you get you're score?
When do you take USMLE III, when do you get you're score?

When do you start applying to residencies?
When do you find out if you got accepted?
When do you start residency after graduation?

Thank you kindly
😀

IN general, USMLE Step 1 is taken between 2nd and 3rd year of medical school. Your score is usually available 3-8 weeks after taking the exam.

Step 2 is usually taken during 4th year of medical school but some take it earlier (because its either required for the residency they're applying for or because they hope that a great score will bolster their application) and some take it later (ie, some schools don't require it for graduation so students put it off). Again, the scores usually take 3-8 weeks to arrive.

Finally, Step 3 is usually taken either intern year, after intern year or sometime before 3rd year - depends on your state, your residency and its requirements. Once again, scores take 3-8 weeks to arrive.

Residency applications are usually submitted early 4th year, specific dates will depend on program and match deadlines.

If you have participated in a match program for residency, you find you where you've matched on, strangely enough, "Match Day". For those using the NRMP to match, this day is usually around the 3rd week of March. There are some residencies which utilize other programs and match earlier (ie, "early matches"). These may offer you the information as early as December of your 4th year.

Residency traditionally starts July 1 - however, many programs have required orientations, etc. which will move your start date up to early or mid June (although you may not officially start working as an intern until July). There are some programs with alternate start dates - these are usually mid year (ie, January).

On that note, moving to General Residency Issues Forum...
