Hi, I'm going into my 4th year as an undergrad at UCLA but planning to take a gap year, so I will be applying in this upcoming cycle in 2017. I'd like to get your opinions on what my chances are and what schools I should apply to with my current stats and a continued upward trend.

oGPA: 3.286
sGPA: 3.19
DAT: PAT/QR/RC/BIO/GC/OC/TS/AA -> 23/20/21/21/19/23/21/21
EC: 120+ volunteering hours, 100+ shadowing hours, currently have 2 different jobs (dental assistant and clerical), board member for 3 different clubs (one of which is a pre-dental club), and part of a competitive club sports

I received almost all C's for gchem and ochem. This was within my first year and a quarter into my second year. I got a C- for one of my ochem classes but retook it and received an A+.

Thank you so much in advance! 🙂

Hey fellow Bruin,

I'll be honest with you, your GPA really holding you back and that C- will still be included when AADSAS calculated your GPA. Your DAT score, however, is good-fair. I really can't recommend which schools you should apply to since I don't know what other requirements you've fulfilled besides the basic ones. So just list them out and I'll try my best to list what schools you'd be eligible for.

these are the math and science classes ive taken and grades i've received:

1st year-
gchem 1: C
math 2: B
gchem 2: C+
math 3: C
lifescience 2: B-
gchem lab: B+

also took a writing class: A-

2nd year-
ochem 1: C-
physics 1: B
stats: A-
lifescience lab: A-
lifescience 3: B+
physics 2: B+
ochem 2: B-
lifescience 1: B
physics 3: B
ochem lab: B+

3rd year-
biology 1: B+
lifescience 4: A-
biochem 1: A
biology 2: A-
ochem 1: A+ (retake)
biology 3: A-
physiology: B+

I have to take one more writing class. And I'm a biology major by the way! I still have this one last year to keep pulling my GPA up even if it's just by .1 or .2!

Not entirely sure what Bio 1, 2, 3 (unless these are Categories 1-3) are. But would definitely recommend taking Scan 50W, EEB 116, 152, 162, 162L, C179, and Biomath 110 to pull your GPA up. Perhaps taking anatomy, micro, or 153C might help? Taking more biochem would expand your school list vastly. As of right now, you can apply to:

UCLA
UCSF
USC
UoP
WesternU
BU
NYU
Tufts
NOVA
Roseman
Case
Touro- I guess

There are more, but these are the only ones I think you'd be interested in?

Get all As in those upper division science courses (which hopefully you'll be doing lots of in your senior year).
If you get all As from here on out in upper science courses, you will have a great chance.

If you have an overall of 19 and have a spike in one of the sections, like if you got 28 on bio, do the notice it and give you an edge?

If you only got a AA 19 with a 28 in Bio, then I'd be really concerned with how poorly you did on every other section to be able to pull it down that much.

Ok negative nancy, thats one way to look at.

I wasn't sure if you knew what classes were like at UCLA, but I'm guessing you went to UCLA too! Biology 1, 2, and 3 were just different eeb courses. I took EEB 100, 116, and 162. Planning on EEB 100L, 121, and CM173 for this coming fall quarter. I am planning on anatomy this winter. Taking another biochem class is scary especially with my extracurriculars, but I really enjoyed biochem 153A so I guess it wouldn't be too bad... I really appreciate your reply by the way! ^^

Thank you! This makes me very hopeful. Believe it or not, I cried right after I took my DAT's because my GPA was so low that I felt like I would need way more than a 21.

There's an upward trend in grades you need to complete! I see Cs and Bs in your first year, mostly Bs in the second, As and Bs in the third. The fourth year is going to have to be all As! Buckle down and keep at it - if you can put a 3.3-4ish GPA next to a 21TS/AA, you'll be right around the "average" to get accepted into dental school.

May I ask why did you recommend BU and Case Western, considering that the acceptance GPA for both schools indicates an overall average of 3.5-3.6?
