hi I am new to this forum, was wondering, based on some real facts, and good opinions, what my chances of acceptance would be to OD. I have a gpa of 2.9. What score would I need to achieve on the OAT's and what would be my chances. Thanks
I notice from your other threads that you are applying to dental schools. I don't mean to discourage you, but unless optometry is what you truly want to do, I wouldn't recommend applying to OD schools as a backup plan.

I agree with r_salis. You have to make sure that this is what you want to do for the 30+ years of your professional life. If you have doubts about it, try shadowing an OD and get more info.

Yep yeps!
Do dental schools take ppl with 2.9?

i highly doubt that would be competitive, but if you have good recommendations and stuff like that, it might balance out.

dental school is not for everyone. optom might seem like a good backup to would-be med/dent students, but after entering, they'll realize it can be just as hard

I think you still have a reasonable chance, especially at the private schools. In 2003 at ICO 16% of the first year class entered with GPA's in the 2.80-2.99 range and 13% with less than 2.80. However, you should probably have a science GPA not much less than 2.90. Also, admissions commitees will also consider you undergraduate university and give preference to people from more comptetive schools... so hopefully this is to your advantage.

Sorry if I've made any errors in judgement here, I'm not terribly familiar with the 4.0 GPA system since my university doesn't use it ( Moi je suis Canadienne )

Do u know what they would rate your school, Waterloo? hehe

Waterloo is probably the hardest optometry school to get into. It's the only English-language Optometry school in Canada - supplying the optometrists that serve a population of probably 20 million. Also, being within one of Canadas top universities makes its a research intensive place... they even collaborate with the faculty of egineering. As for acadmic requirements, I think its also the hardest, although UC at Berkley is probably very close. Last year the average grade of successful applicants was ~85% ( GPAs of 3.8-4.0?) and the average OAT was a 360, although I don't think they're too picky about the OAT, 310 or 320 will do.

As for reputation at the undergrad level, University of Waterloo is one of top in the country, with the likes of UofT, UBC, UWO, Mac, Queens, among others... and was recently ranked #1 comprehensive university by Macleans Magazine and also won "best overall," and "most innovative" reputational titles.

I appreciate the concern, but i like any health related field, as long as I can help people and help the community. I just wanted to know my chances

It's not unknown, but a 2.9 is definitely a significant handicap for dental school admission, and not something I'd look forward to having to overcome.
