Hey guys, sorry to burden you all with more advice but I really just dont know the scoop on psych having only just made the decision to pursue it but...

I am looking at residencies in NYC--I dont have any favorites just yet but I know I want to be back in NYC. I'm an older student & environment means more to me than prestige at this point.
So my step 1 was ok--about avg, not great.
I have all HS & one Honors in my 3rd yr (the honors is not in psych) My shelf grades are avg (except peds which I did great but hated--go figure🙄)
My clinical & interpersonal evals are stellar (but the psych was pretty bland if you read my last post)
I am taking step 2 very soon & hope to do better than step 1
Any advice on what I can do to bolster my chances? Havent done research again cuz I didnt think I was going into psych. I will be doing an emergency psych elective shortly & hope to do away rotations in psych in NYC--good idea or not?
sorry so long & thank you so much for your help!

Yeah, I actually went through the posts for several weeks before posting my info. COuldnt quite find info that applied directly to my scenario & interests. Thanks though-i appreciate any direction i can get

Away electives are excellent ways to get yourself known and to find out about programs. NYC has a lot of programs, and they range significantly in terms of competitiveness, but many of them are excellent. Cornell and Columbia are likely to be the hardest to get in, and, if you look at their sites, they have relatively few people from outside a small cluster of medical schools who don't also have something great (particularly a PhD or a lot of research). NYU and Sinai are also very strong, but there is probably more range in terms of who gets in. Some people would put NYU alongside Cornell and Columbia, but I don't think that's true at least in terms of ranking hierarchy, partly because it is bigger and so has more flexibility and range (plus, most everyone at Cornell or Columbia would have matched at NYU if they'd wanted, and the reverse isn't true). Einstein is also excellent but some don't view it as being "in the city." NYC is the world epicenter for psych, which means that other programs attract excellent faculty and trainees even though they may not have the rep of these others. And of course, rep doesn't improve education, and many people are better off at programs that are less academically focused (and are probably less intense/tense).

😱

...if you're a psychiatrist in NYC. :meanie:

I know people from NYC get a reputation for thinking the world revolves around NYC. I figure people usually just wanna go back to where they came from when all is said & done. I'm in Western NY now & I see people returning all the time cuz its home for them.
eh...But if you think about it Sinatra only sang about 2 cities (if I'm not mistaken) New York & Chicago 😉 jk

Doesn't mean much if you prefer Tony Bennett, for example...😎

I'm just saying-- there are many more cities, many more songs...
(And I fully support your desire to train in NYC. I just like to provoke sometimes...)

Tony Bennett vs Frank Sinatra????
I like Mr bennett & all but c'mon, "its frankie's world; we only live in it"...😛

i should mention everyone i love is in NYC & thats really my motivation 😍

yeah and did you know that Sinatra actually lived in Hoboken, NJ??? ha ha ha!
Have you thought about other programs in NY that are mainly filled with American grads and give you a hugely diverse training like St Vincent's which is in a cool part of the city?? Its really what you are looking for in a program...

While NYC is certainly a center, I'm not quite sure I'd call it THE epicenter of psych.

I'm glad OldPsychDoc chimed in and challenged the post. Boston, SF, and Baltimore also deserve mention as Psych centers.

cleareyedguy, as a "Pre-Health" student, on what are you basing your claim?
