Today I found out that my Dermatologist is a DO. He is a military doc and went to TCOM. I mentioned that he must have done very well and he said that he was in the top 2% of his class and scored in the 98th percentile on his boards. I was just surprised that he was a DO. He makes me even more proud to be a pre osteopath. It is really awesome to see so many Osteopathic doctors breaking the stereotype. Chalk one up for the good guys!👍

Well I assume you mean by 'breaking the stereotype' that he went to an Allo Residency...because there are a handful of DO Derm Res's.

useful comment 🙂

That is awesome, just shows you that most people have been to a DO and didn't even know it, and helps reduce the stereotype about specializing.

It's good to see DO's specializing in difficult fields...but, if DO's are the good guys, does that imply MD's are the bad guys? Now that's just not fair 🙂

I noticed this too, but am just going to assume the OP was using "good guys" in contrast with people saying DO's cannot specialize.

Yeah, I made the same assumption but I still had to bring it up, I chuckled after reading the original post

Believe it or not, there is a stereotype that DO students are not as bright as MD students, and it has been suggested many times that DO students were unsuccessful at obtaining an acceptance to MD school, which is true for some. I am applying to osteopathic schools and I imagine some of you are as well, so I am biased towards osteopaths and it is nice to see DO students blowing away boards and having their pick at MD residencies.

Does that shed some clarity for the people who had a hard time comprehending my post? I can break it down even more for you ssshashi, just read my original post slowly and you should be able to determine that the words "bad guys" were not mentioned. So a quick recap for you, because you are probably still a little behind. MD's are not "bad guys”; however, it is nice to see the underdogs come out on top. So I am chalking one up for the good guys.

I don't honestly think anyone was behind, but the way you worded it in the original post was funny.

Also, I would be careful with calling DO's osteopaths, the term has bad connotations.

I by no means think this is true. How ever I can understand where that misconception comes from, given that it is a smidgen more difficult to get into an MD school than a DO school, and MOST of the time people attend DO schools because they didn't get into MD schools. What ever though GPA and MCAT only go so far, they do NOT mean MD's make better doctors than DO's, because that would be flat out false, from what ever angle its looked at.

HAHA this is funny. Go ahead and check out UNTHSC-TCOM and look at how many end up doing allo residencies. Even better, check out how many do better on the USMLE compared to the other texas schools.

Military residency =/= Allo/ACGME residency ... it = Military residency. There are several students who do Military derm from DO schools each year. I saw at least 2 this year - that I remember - just from match lists on SDN. If I wasn't lazy ... I'd pull them up (but I am).

MOST of the time people attend DO schools because they didn't get into MD schools.

I just want to point out that many people (myself included) apply to BOTH tracks because we like MD and DO schools equally.

If both schools were in the same city (close to home), my number 1 choice (MD) and my number 2 choice (DO) would have been tied for #1. I liked them both equally. The MD won the tie breaker because it was closer to family and in my home state.

I didn't get into the MD school. Wound up at the DO school (LECOM-B), which I love, and honestly, we're much happier here than we would have been in the other cities.

I think both schools on my plate are great institutions and I'm honored to have been considered or accepted at either one. It had absolutely nothing to do with MD vs. DO.

This is awesome! Especially since last week I went to a new derm who was literally fresh out of residency (at Mayo) and told her I was in the process of applying to D.O. school. All I got was an uninterested "Oh" as if to say "Wow I guess you are too dumb to get into a MD school." You can bet I'm not going for a second visit. 😀

You have awesome points. And I cannot say I do not agree with your reasoning, however I am aware of scenarios such as your own, which is why "most" was in caps. 🙂
Good luck with everything!!
