My EFC is kinda scary...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your loans would be that much lower. Did you put in parental info?

ya, but I'm not expecting any monetary help from them.

Mine was $48,000 last year and I had no problem. I wouldn't worry about the EFC, it's rare not to qualify for the full stafford loan amount. A lot of it comes down to what the financial aid office budgets for you. Talk to them if you have concerns.

No, they won't. The government does not restrict access to educational funding based on the financial and credit history of an applicant - what they will do is reserve certain forms of need, e.g. subsidized, perkins, Health Professions loans, for those that demonstrate the greatest need. The EFC is a figure that the Department of Education uses to gauge an applicant's basis for need - if it is high then chances are you will only qualify for a very low (if that) subsidized and the full unsubsidized amounts. There is a cap on the total amount of loans that you can take out (~138,000) during your entire academic career, both your undergraduate and graduate. Thus, if you have taken out a lot of loans to cover your undergraduate education the amount of funds available from the government to cover dental school will be reduced.

I don't even have the EFC. Am I just missing it on the fasfa form or because I am classified as independed (becuase i'm married) I don't have EFC.

I am only applying for stafford loans (the 8.5K subsidized, 10K unsub with an option to increase the unsub another 20K). I did not add my family info, so is that why I don't see EFC?

Hmmm. Well, I don't have any student loans, so I guess it can't be too bad. I only plan on using federal loans anyway. I hope I qualify for the full amount, though I probably won't need all of it.

I am married as well, but I also entered my parents info at the suggestion of the financial aid girl

are you trying to take out the full stafford amount (38,500) and perkins loans?

The full stafford amount would suit me fine (38,500). I don't expect to use all of it, but it would be good to make sure that I have more than enough than too little. I would give back the rest I didn't use.

You must have gotten some pretty nice scholarships if your EFC is only $15k and you don't need to take out the full amount for UCLA.

I just looked over my FAFSA in more detail and found the draded EFC.

Mine is $30359. Since I did not enter any of my parents info, I take it this is more of spousal est. contribution.

Mine was 1,200 this year for college, lol

Nope. Not for UCLA. My parents owe $100,000 to pay off their house, but they essentially live paycheck to paycheck and have very little savings.

My wife is an RN, whose income only goes up every year. Living expenses will be covered there, that's why I'm only concerned with paying for tuition.

Don't you have to include spousal income on the FAFSA since you guys file taxes jointly? I didn't make nearly as much as a nurse last year, and my EFC was like almost 3 times yours. I guess I don't understand how they come up with the EFC afterall. Moot point anyways for dental school.
