Hey all,

So just one day out of submitting ERAS I have been offered an interview. 🙂🙂 The interview period that I shown is quite wide (from Oct-Jan '09). What are your thoughts on when to schedule the interview? Should I do it early to "get it done with" or should I wait until other interviews come in and then tackle the scheduling this way? The PD actually emailed me and I think replying to the PD early as a courtesy would be in place.....

hey medready Congrat! I think you should schedule it early if you think that it is when of your highly ranked progs and schedule it late if you had apllied to it only as a standby

A lot of the scheduling depends on what electives you've got over those 4 months. I would be inclined to go earlier unless this is a really important interview for you and you want some practice elsewhere first.

by "early" do you mean between Sept-Oct; I figured I would schedule most of my interviews in Dec as I have decided to take that month off to study for Step 2 CS and prepare for interviews....

Yeah, I would go earlier unless it's not one you want to "practice" on. You never know what conflicts you will have later.

Programs must download your stuff. Anyway, how would we know whether to "bother" or not without looking at your app?

An interesting "effect" of ERAS is programs which reject you (if any 😀) will continue downloading your stuff if you add more. We can't help it, we get new information on everyone who has applied, even those rejected.

Out of curiousity, what happens if someone withdraws an app on the PD end (for instance, say someone applied to both a categorical residency + a preliminary year at an institution and then withdrew one or the other...)

Once you apply, your stuff continues to come to me, regardless of what you or I do. It's no big deal to me -- I've rejected your application on my end, and so it doesn't show up in my system any more (unless I specifically ask to see rejected applications). But it can be disconcerting to medical students, or seem hurtful ("Why do they keep downloading my information when they rejected me?")

just didn't get the filtering process. thought maybe filtering could be done prior to downloading.

I, like the OP, got an interview invite today. All my stuff is in...including the 4 LORs, Transcript, USMLE transcript, PS, etc. The only thing not uploaded is my Dean's Letter, which of course won't be uploaded until Nov. 1.

I got my first invite today too...kind of surprised since my app lacks my med school transcripts (waiting for my sub-I grade to be put on it) and only has 1 LOR in so far. My USMLE transcripts just got in the post office this morning. I'm also going into peds.

THey adust them - USMLE scores, years since graduation etc.

If you have ability to do it early, I would go in early. Especially if you don't need a "warm-up-but-I-am-never-going-to-go-there" interview.

Why? Because a lot of the places will offer prematches to FMGs or DOs (if you are applying to a ACGME place) if they think they are not getting a lot of interest, and going there early and showing interest helps your chances. This is applicable to peds, since I know you are applying to peds, and I just finished a peds residency.

Now, that's not to say the super amazing reputation programs do that (CHOP, children's memorial, etc), because they have likely never had to scramble in a spot. And if the PD already emailed you, my guess is that your place #1 likes your app, #2 is not one of those aforementioned super amazing reputation programs, and #3 would like you to interview sooner rather than later.

I don't. Someone recently posted a problem that all three of their letter writers asked them to write their own letter. What's the point of that?

The point, to me, is that this is unethical. Not surprising considering some of the people I have seen in medical school.

I completely agree this is wrong, and I place the blame on the faculty. Writing your own evaluation can be a powerful experience, as you are forced to focus on both your strengths and your weaknesses. Asking a student to write their own LOR is simply wrong, and I expect people do it out of laziness.

I really think this is specialty specific...for instance, I'm pretty sure in dermatology the letters do mean a lot..maybe this is for smaller fields where most ppl know each other.

Yeah, I don't really see it as unethical, as the student will still sign the waiver of rights and the signor has the final approval to change things s/he disagrees with. So you can write that you were "the best medical student ever to do the rotation", they may change it to "among the best medical students ever to do the rotation", the "worst medical student ever to do the rotation" or whatever tweaks they feel are warranted, and you don't necessarily get to see how they change it. So it doesn't bring ethics to question -- they still have final say. But it absolutely is lazy because it's much easier to tweak a letter or leave it alone than write one from scratch. They don't really know you from a week or two of a rotation, so it can be a much more personal letter this way, and they'd rather do it this way and make it seem like they really know their students rather than spend to time to actually get to really know their students. So it's laziness, absolutely. But ethics doesn't really play into it because they end up signing off on a letter they agree with and can stand behind, but were just too lazy to do the legwork on.
